2023 49er Football Season 🏈

Maybe another Walk on QB can lead us to a bowl game like Reynolds did a few years ago… can we hope… can you hope?

I sure hope so. God I do.

It’s all about winning for me. I am not sure what our record is this year with moral victories?

ictories? It’s a little late for a walk-on messiah. Maybe IV can learn not to take bonehead sacks, maybe our offensive line will learn to effectively block the run and the pass against competition with less talent, and maybe the minds and health of the defense are not wasted by the coaches after 1-4.

It isn’t about moral victories, it is about are we improving from where we were last year. Anyone expecting a quick turnaround bought into some BS. Football very rarely works that way - especially in college. It takes time. We are better now than we were a year ago. We will know at the end of the season how much we have improved and that isn’t always seen in Ws and Ls at the start of a turn around.

Its pretty hard to impossible to go from what we had last year to undefeated. Have to be a bit pragmatic in the process.

FWIW I’m still not sold in Biff or this staff. Have to see them grow just as much as the kids. My biggest concern is we took chances on a lot of kids - if the losses pile up we need to hope we don’t have locker room issues.

The defense wouldn’t be a question if paired with a serviceable offense. We can’t have a serviceable offense without an effective QB. It’s pretty difficult to play smash mouth run-focused football these days unless the offense is built for it and the play calls are consistent with the players’ talent.

To your point, ½ a year was probably not enough time to build that, and to add, certainly not enough time to have one offense for QB1 and a complete different offense for a walk-on QB2.

Yo mods. Time to move this discussion to 2023 Niner football.

Over half of our snaps are occurring against Heavy Box (feel like I am teeing this up for @hootie)…

And we don’t exploit it with vertical passing against 1 on 1 coverage.

Until we fix this, the season is going nowhere.

Easy fix…play Trexler.

I hope we’ve decided one way or another and used this off week to get whatever our identify is going to be this year on O established. We’ve been taking wild swings for nearly half a year, it’s time to settle in. I think though you’re right we need to go with Ivey but the run/pass mix needs to be like it was against SMU not his previous two appearances.

Lol. Too easy…….

Was Biff calling the plays for Maryland that series?? Down 10 with 9 minutes and run 4 straight times and turn it over on downs. Not even close to getting a first down

I’m stating the obvious here, but we are seeing a heavy box because we predominately run 12 personnel. You can match up our formation percentages to the # in the box pretty closely 12 personnel 51% vs 55% heavy box, 11 personnel 40% vs 6 man box 38%.
