Al Wallace made this same point after the Florida game. JJ cannot solely be our running game because he will get injured sooner or later. Got to get other backs involved.
This, use a scalpel not a sledgehammer. When we go to Ivey everything is changed up, almost like an act of desperation (although Ivey has played much better than expected). This could change but as of now I think our best hope is to let Jones be the man, mixed in some quick passes and RPO stuff, and run a little option. However his default needs to be to get it to the RB, which Iām sure is hard for someone that explosive.
Still though the penalties, negative plays, and turnovers have got to be eliminated playing this style or weāre dead in the water.
I agree with this, but just a note----we had no lost turnovers against Florida.
Totally agree the line needs to block better, the play calling needs to reflect if the oline is struggling in pass protection (quicker routes) and our WRs need to get open and provide more opportunities. I do agree QB cant control a lot of this. Itās just the position most impacted. And yes Jalon has played probably close to 85% of the snaps in the UF and MD game (ivey only had 4 series in those 2 games), but the point is the staff is taking him out because they donāt think he can make certain plays. He needs to be able to make the throws needed so he isnāt coming out or limiting the play book by such a degree.
I really havenāt done a good job in watching the WRs to see if they are getting separations, but we are definitively sending them on too many deep and time consuming routes given the struggles on the line.
The most frustrating thing is Biff wants to run the ball and for that to be our identity but so far it isnāt. Our offense really doesnāt have an identity besides not very good.
Yup that was a great trend to break. It would have gotten away from us if we had turned it over.
I agree with you. At some point, we have to look at play calling. JJ doesnāt call the plays. In the MD game, he was 4/4 in the first half. FOUR passing plays.
Why are we not direct-handing off to the RBs? Go look at his numbers at Bethune or Jackson. He can throw. The OC needs to find what works for him. BUT WE HAVE TO GET OUR RBs INVOLVED. To say we want to ārun the dang ballā it doesnāt look like it.
Did you see what happened almost every single time we tried handing off to a RB in the Florida game? The line has to open holes at least occasionally. In that game, they were not. Therefore, the best running game was improvisation, which is what JJ was doing most of the time.
Athletic director Mike Hillās philosophy is that Charlotte will play two Power 5 programs in the non-conference every year, scheduling multiple trips to some of college footballās biggest stages in the coming years, as well as home-and-homes with local programs and the occasional SEC team. This means that Charlotte will take its lumps in the non-conference, but there are huge opportunities to play nationally televised games against notable programs, where Charlotte intends to build on its first Power 5 victory against Duke in 2021.

I agree 100% with our scheduling philosophy. No more EMUs or teams like that, thereās no regional excitement and and even if they are horrible when you make that game you have no idea how good theyāll be when you play.
Plus two P5s does give the hope of a playoff spot, especially if one is at home.
Why does Alabama and UGA schedule very winnable home games every year? Scheduling is a component of building a successful program. If we did not play UMass in 2019 we would still have zero winning seasons.
I feel like looking for the Jim Mora clip right now.
Playoffs??? Did you say Playoffs???
Haha. Thatās fair but you going to swim in the deep end jump in without the life preserver.
I wouldnāt like it if it was two money games, but if one is a H&H thatās what you want. We would have went bowling regardless in 2019. However you give up the Duke game and a shot to get State and Chapel Hill at home if you just do one (or give up 1-1.5 million in revenue). The program builders are getting those home games and winning them, not scheduling to get to 6 wins. At least imho.
Ideally though you do both.
Apps current football state isnāt built off 3 FCS titles. Itās built in taking a pay game in Ann Arbor, expecting to lose and walking away with a win and the cash. It literally changed their program. If we donāt schedule them, we canāt win them. We had both MD and UF in positions where we could have won. It will come.
Anyone. Anytime. Anywhere.
I sort of agree but if you play 1 p5, win that and tge conference, you can still go to playoff. Dont need to play 2 to do that
Not all P5 games are the same though.
I like scheduling the winnable game (like wake) the. a pay game (Clemson).
Home and Homes with P5s are also important as it engages the fanbase, seeks tickets and helps raise money.
I think more and more p5 games will be winnable, or winnableish than they used to be. Flirida is a good example
And even the games that arenāt winnable may in fact be winnable. Shocking wins happen every year.
I mean, when we found out a few years ago that we would play at florida, did any of you expect a competitive game? Im guessing no one thought it would be 22-7, especially with this bad of an offense
