I actually think we regressed as the season went. Thatās a very disturbing sign in my opinion
Post game/season analysis:
The offensive numbers speak for themselves
3rd down conversions 1/13
4th down conversions 0/4
3 interceptions
Obviously the defense had short fields, but they gave up over 500 yards of offense
What dwindling optimism I have going into next season is this, Biff can recruit us out of problems, we had one of the worst defenses last season in FBS, and before this last game we had a top 50 rated defense nationally, so hopefully Biff can recruit us out of our offensive problems as well
What scares me is that Miller and Biff missed on the most important position in the game, their assessment that Jones could be the starting quarterback, the late addition of Bowens. and the elevation of Ivey from 4th to 2nd string, shows that there are issues with quarterback evaluations
Recruiting is Biffs strongest asset, although what concerns me moving forward is that he is leaning on his St Frances pipeline to upgrade the roster more than he should, and by doing so he is over looking obvious character and talent flaws in order to get his guys in here, I have no problem with recruiting the DMV, but a lot of these players seemed to be over rated power 5 misses with character flaws, Biff cant recruit a player just because he has ties to St Frances, not all of these guys are going to be a fit here, we need to build a fence around the Charlotte region and keep regional players home as our base
I dont think that this is Biffs fault, but we need quality depth, and it will take more than a short recruiting cycle for him to land that, but injuries are part of the game, and on the offensive side of the ball we had too many injuries at skill positions, and we need quality rotation on the defensive side of the ball ( D-line ) to keep the defense fresh in the fourth quarter, we have to be able to replace players with minimal production losses
I want to see us recruit vertical threats at wide receiver, it seems that we recruited possession type wide receivers, and we need speedy vertical threats that can stretch defenses and keep them from stacking the box ( but we also need play calling early in the game to establish that vertical threat which will open up running lanes )
Outside of the obvious quarterback deficiencies, the offensive line was the most disappointing to me, I expected it to be our strength, and some of this fell on our inability to throw over the top, but we were constantly in 3rd and long situations because of our inability run effectively on 1st and 2nd downs, in order for us to control time of possession, and establish our power running game, we need to dominate the offensive line of scrimmage, how many times did we fail to get short yardage that would have resulted in touchdowns instead of field goals or first downs that would have extended drives to win games, we cant be average with a predictable vanilla running offense, we have to be dominant
I had limited expectations going into the season, I had us going 5-7, two power five games from the BIG 10 and SEC, a move up into the AAC and a coach making his debut at the FBS level, 5-7 would have been a solid record under these circumstances, Biffs rhetoric over inflated his coaching abilities and gave everyone high expectations that were unachievable
With an average quarterback we probably win the Memphis and Navy game, and maybe pull the upset over Florida, I am cautiously optimistic going into next season under Biff due to his recruiting ability, if we had just an average quarterback this season we are in line for a low level bowl bid, but this coaching staff has to prove that they can assess, target, and recruit an FBS level quarterback through the portal or high school ranks
Because Fearne was on the staff that sucked for however many years. He is partly responsible for the team that was assembled. He is in a totally different situation than Poggi. He has no quality recruits lined up because of his interim tag as well. Fearne really has the odds stacked against him, but I like him as an in-game coach. If he keeps this up well into Conference play I think he gets a contract.
For Poggi, you do not hire a head football coach and fire him after year 1. No good candidate would come into a situation where they may be fired after one year. The only way that is done is if there are things outside of football going on. At the end of the day we were picked to finish last in the American and we did better than that. We were competitive earlier in the season against teams I didnāt think we would be good against. The only thing that got Poggi in trouble was how he ran his mouth at the beginning of the season. Outside of the artificial expectations he created, they probably outperformed what most thought they would do.
Quoted to fill up space. No idea what it might contain, but it must be important
That was a great freaking post @TheShowDawg. Wish I could like it more than once. Had a similar thought when he made that tackle. Wilson has character. Need more guys like that.
Thanks. To me Wilson is what college athletics is suppose to be about. Wilson and players like him are what I want to support instead of 5 million dollar NIL HS Jr QBs but I need to go get someone off my lawn!!!
Hope Biff pulls a rabbit out of the hat this next recruiting period. I do believe we need a little of everything and a lot of depth.
Probably not a popular opinion but I think our program might be in a better position today if we had just kept Lambert around instead of hiring 2 get rich quick, hype machine coaches who turn out to not be so great at actually coaching. I donāt think we would be great but I think things would be more stable and we would actually be developing players. Iāll give Biff next year to turn things around but if we look similar to the way we did this year I think itās safe to say it was a really bad hire.
I worry about his āIf Iām even back next yearā quote. Did anyone hear that or just Hunter quoting him? What was the context? From what Iāve heard myself, Biff sounds like heās all in for next year. The jury is still out on Biff but if he leaves after this year and we donāt see this through at least next year our program is really hurt.
You think most teams had 12 starters out in their last game? Come on.
He has made mention of that before talking to the press. I donāt doubt he said that. Itās a bad look for him, trying to keep players, recruit players, and for Hill.
That is precisely why I think Biff should get the Fck out of here. If he has second thoughts about being the head coach next season, quit now. If he is pandering for please donāt go, he should quit now. If he is passively implying he might be let go to get sympathy or whatever the motive, he isnāt fit to lead the team. In the end, what is broken is Biffās ego.
As for the program potentially bring better off sticking with lambert mentioned by another, that is a reflection of how bad Mike Hillās hires have performed.
Biff wants attention. He is hoping someone feels bad for himā¦
When he says he isnāt sure about being here next year Iām pretty certain he means if Mike wants him back. He said if he doesnāt win Mike should fire him.
I think itās a bad choice of words and looks terrible. Thatās par for the course with Biff though.
At least with Lambert I felt like we had an adult at the head of the table. Other, not so much
Biff would be best served to bring in a seasoned former head college coach to help him organize this chaos.
Thats exactly what Iāve said. He needs a former College HC as a assistant or advisor or something.
Absolutely stupid remark right before the transfer portal opens up, Biff has to think about the implications of his words before he speaks
You are probably right, he said before the season that if he does not win right away than he should be fired, but potential recruits just hear the recent sound bites and react accordingly
Well looky who just hit the portal:
