No, because you said āRon take note ā¦ā
You win. I take it back.
Sorry to upset you.
Ladies come back from a 7 run UTEP lead to win second game in series 9-8 with a walk off double by Washington in the 7th inning.
And a mistake by their catcher on the tag at the plate! I didnāt know that was a rule that you couldnāt have your foot outside the baseline.
Iām not up on that rule, but whatever she did was stupid and unnecessary. They had our runner out by quite a bit without breaking any rule. Home plate ump was horrible, as will happen from time to time. Need to complete the sweep tomorrow.
I am not sure what happened but if the catcher does not have possession of the ball, she cannot block the plate. Thus, I would assume she had one foot across the baseline in foul territory and that could be call obstruction. As such requires the catcher to swipe rather than blocking the plate. Rule was setup to prevent collisions that causes injury.
Yepā¦and if itās a rule they are emphasizing for the season they look for it and call it alot. When my daughter was playing at Catawba 3-4 years agoā¦this same rule was emphasized and a call you never saw ever madeā¦was being called once every other game.
The next year it was the slapper touching or being out of the batters box at contact. Itās never called. And that year it was called what seemed like once per game.
You may want to define āslapperā for non softball fans.
Yes, I recall years past when girls would be a full step out of the box with no call.
Slapper is a left handed speedster that gets a running start in the box and typically just tries to bunt or softly put the ball in play or chop it into the dirt as they are moving out of the box. If done right and the girl is fast enough itās almost impossible to defend.
If itās timed rightā¦the front foot is technically out of the front of the box but if it does not touch the ground until after contact itās still legal (thatās the technical partā¦the player cannot make contact with the ball if a foot is on the ground outside of the batters box). But itās so hard to tell in a lot of cases.
But the one you can see more easily that gets ignored is when their back foot steps all over the line that runs front to back next to the plate as they are moving towards the ball. Thatās easy to see and happens all of the time. There was a team 4-5 yrs ago when this got attention in the College World Seriesā¦the CWS MVP stepped out of the box (next to the plate) every time she slapped and never got called on it once.
The next year it became a point of emphasis and they seemed to call it EVERY time it happened.
One way to describe slapping is similar to what in baseball is a drag bunt but swinging as you are moving into the ball.
Drag bunts are illegal in Tennessee.
Correctā¦but in softball itās more of a swing that can be controlled. A good slapper can bunt it or push it or chop it or slap it or Power slap it to all sides of the field depending on how the defense is set up.
And actually in baseballā¦Ichiro would do it on occassion too.
Literally āslapā the ball with a punch swing to the opposite field as he was moving out of the box.
Didnāt say they were, just trying to define a slapper. Geees!
Sorry. I was confusing drag bunts with drag shows.
Edit: At least CLT got the joke.
Ladies sweep series, defeat UTEP 6-0 today
Next weekend series is at WKU, who swept North Texas this weekend. That will be a tough one.
They normally have some serious home umpiring with no replays. Thank God this will be our last trip there.
clt says rpi is at 30
If Charlotte softball does not get its first NCAA bid this spring, Iām going to be very disappointed.
