2024-25 49er MBB Game #2 @ Utah State 11/9 4PM Mtn West Network

USU’s home court - Dee Glen Smith Spectrum - which seats 10,270.

Final

Utah State 101
Alcorn State 46

Agree the game will be a challenge for us but I am not sure that the Alcorn State defeat is much of an indicator. Their, Alcorn State, previous game was with Utah, and they lost that game 100-59.

Thanks for the time zone help friend. Between this and daylight savings, my brain was struggling.

How does one access the mountain west network?

They have an app for Roku/Apple/Google(TV), or you can watch it via a browser. Link on the Utah State schedule page. It’s not as good as ESPN+, but it’s better than CUSA.tv was.

Bro, the mountain west conference is legit.

CUSA-TV cowers in fear at the might of the Mountain West Network.

Also, free games = more viewers = more advertising dollars??? whodathunk???

Reminds me that the original MW network - The Mtn. - was a collosal failure, shutting down in 2012 after only 6 years of operation.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a little insight into what you can expect from the Utah State Aggies this season. With new head coach Jerrod Calhoun at the helm, the Aggies are bringing a fast-paced, high-energy style of play, focusing on a deep rotation and a matchup zone defense that keeps opponents on their toes. Calhoun plans to run 9-10 players deep all season, which gives us fresh legs and flexibility on both ends of the court. Here’s a look at some of our top players and what they bring to the floor:

Key Players

Aubin Gateretse (C, Sr.):
Our senior center Gateretse has been a powerhouse so far, scoring 24 points on a perfect 11-for-11 shooting night in our season opener. He’s strong in the paint, finishing off lobs and putbacks with ease, and brings serious defensive presence. Gateretse’s efficiency around the rim and ability to alter shots makes him a key figure in our matchup zone.

Ian Martinez (G, Gr. Sr.):
Martinez is our experienced guard, known for his explosive athleticism and ability to score from all three levels. He’s a reliable shooter, hitting 38% from three last season, and can handle secondary playmaking duties if needed. His defensive energy and shooting touch are big assets, especially in transition and quick offensive sets.

Tucker Anderson (F, So.):
A transfer from Central Arkansas, Anderson brings elite shooting to our lineup. He averaged 14.5 points last season, shooting 38% from beyond the arc, which stretches defenses and opens up lanes for our other scorers. With his height (6’9") and agility, Anderson can defend on the perimeter and help in the paint when needed.

Drake Allen (G, Sr.):
Allen adds senior leadership at the point guard spot. He’s got strong court vision and excels at getting teammates involved. His size (6’4") allows him to back down defenders, and he’s not afraid to battle for rebounds and loose balls. Allen’s steady playmaking will be key to keeping up our high-tempo offense.

Deyton Albury (G, Sr.):
Albury’s athleticism is rare for our program. He’s fast, attacks the rim with intensity, and is a reliable outside shooter. His aggressive defensive style and speed in transition are perfect for Calhoun’s up-tempo system, making him a constant threat to get a quick bucket or set up teammates.

Isaac Johnson (C, Jr.):
Johnson provides additional depth in the frontcourt. He’s a solid shooter for his size and can step out to hit a three when left open. Johnson’s rebounding and interior scoring make him a versatile big who can spell Gateretse and keep our defensive intensity high.

Mason Falslev (Guard, 6’3", Sophomore):
A local standout from Sky View High School, Falslev had a breakout redshirt freshman season, averaging 11.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Known for his athleticism and versatility, he provides significant contributions on both ends of the floor.

Team Style

  • Fast-Paced Offense: Calhoun’s system is designed to wear teams down with speed and depth. The Aggies push the pace on both ends, looking to turn defense into quick offense.
  • Matchup Zone Defense: Utah State utilizes a matchup zone that keeps opponents guessing and forces turnovers, which fuels our fast-break game.
  • Depth and Versatility: With plans to go 9-10 players deep, the Aggies stay fresh and can rotate players in based on matchups. This depth has shown benefits already, as 11 players scored in our season opener.

Utah State has had a strong start, and Calhoun’s emphasis on defense, depth, and speed could make the Aggies a tough matchup for any team. Looking forward to an exciting season!

So USU is an experienced squad, with good depth, and plays together. Will be a very tough game for us.

I’ll let someone else breakdown our team player by player. The truth is, we have been decimated by NIL :moneybag:, losing 5 of our top players over the last 2 seasons (to: BYU / Louisville, Nebraska, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Tennessee). Suffice to say, I would have loved to play this game with those 5 guys on our roster.

This year is another rebuild, which appears to be what the new reality is for even good mid major programs going forward. I don’t really know how good or bad we are; there are far too many new players, and we played our first game missing 3 of them due to injury.

I like our coach, and we have some decent depth at a couple of positions… Notably, we lost what I thought was the best Forward / Center combination in our conference last year and I don’t think we’ve adequately replaced them. We can probably be had there and on the boards.

I respect USU. Good program. Will see what Vegas thinks going into Saturday.

No spread there yet. Saw another one that was USU (-7).

Among the nine Aggie newcomers (7 transfers + 2 frosh) are a couple of players who saw action vs Niners last season with their respective 2023-24 schools:

Drake Allen, 6-4 G • Utah Valley
@ Charlotte, 11-15-23: 12 pts, 6 rebs

Aubin Gateretse, 6-11 C • Stetson
@ Charlotte, 12-5-23: 6 pts, 2 rebs
@ Stetson, 12-29-23: 6 pts, 7 rebs

And as mentioned before, USU 6-2 G Deyton Albury played at Queens last season, where he averaged 17 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 3.7 apg for the Royals.

clt notes we have made zero “soaking” jokes

Thanks for the great info. Also, if youre interested in more discussion on the game, we have our agent49 discord forum

There’s also plenty of discussion here.
