2024-25 49er MBB Game #23 vs Wichita State 2/4 7PM ESPNU

Our only real hope to win is to shoot the ball very well. We generally donā€™t and last night was no different.

Yeah, mostly after the lead ballooned way too much.

Funny how last year the game announcers pushed hard for us to take the interim tag off Fearnes after our little winning streak. Now they talk about if we had kept the team together we would be in contention for the AAC title. Get real.

Iā€™m not convinced the system he runs is sustainable. Looks like we spend a lot of time and energy before throwing up desperation shots. Itā€™s not very efficient and is hard for the players to get into any rhythm and we are never in position to rebound.

Last night on the post game he said he was satisfied with the number of 3s we shot. We shot 25% and most were with the shot clock expiring.

Yes there is a lack of talent but maybe itā€™s because of our style of play.

Just donā€™t see really talented players wanting to play this style of ball.

We had consistently some of the best talent in CUSA with Ron. Brice, Aly, Milicic, Young, and more. You can recruit perfectly fine with this system. Now whether the system is too complicated for a bunch of 1-year rentals to learn, that may be a different conversation

I think it absolutely is.

What system is most common in high school? Iā€™m sure the Princeton is basically non existent at that level.

Given the limited time you often have with kids now, might as well run a system that eases that transition as much as possible.

People get too hung up on ā€œsystemā€. Had a guy years ago touting the flex offense. I just looked at him and said you mean the passing game thatā€™s been around since Naismith hung up a peach basket? He wasnā€™t amused.

Itā€™s not complicated but if you canā€™t score the ball consistently youā€™re gonna struggle. We just donā€™t have a guy that says give me the ball and get the hell out of my way when we need a score. We also canā€™t hit wide open 3ā€™s. Weā€™re just not very good.

Braswellā€™s shooting has been a huge disappointment the second part of the season. We might have won a game or two if he was shooting better.

IMO, Bradford should get more minutes. He has shown he can score the basketball.

I have mentioned this before that Trevor on the radio mentions every game about how many 3ā€™s Fearne wants us to shoot. Maybe we make them all in practice. I looked this morning and weā€™re last in the conference in 3 point shooting percentage and second to last in 3 pointers made per game. Weā€™re also last in the conference in rebounding so clearly size is an issue too.

Obviously, weā€™re not good, it sucks. It would be cool to win on Saturday for Bobbyā€™s day.

I agree and think that he has underperformed this year. The system we run was geared to get him open looks and he has not been able to hit threes with any consistency. He has been the recipient of back door passes on occasion but he has a hard time holding the ball in the lane when defended. His defense is non existent mostly due to his lack of physicality. Not sure what his +/- is on the floor but it canā€™t be good. Disappointing given his age and years of experience.

The three point shot is the new ā€œmodernā€ game. He wants 25+ threes a game and we are getting them with open looks. The trouble is current roster just canā€™t knock them down. Last night we had so many open threes that guys rushed and missed that would have changed momentum.
They are still playing hard for Coach. I wonder at what point individuals might start to play for themselves to try and get a bigger bag next year.

This is whatā€¦ the first season that Braswell has played all season? Iā€™ve been wondering if heā€™s hit something similar to the nba wall :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Braswell played 31 games during first season as a Niner in 2021-22 and 27 last year. Appeared in 10 games in 2002-23.

This season the first - as either a Niner or an Orangeman - that he has started every game heā€™s played in.

This season is so awesome; Mike Hillā€™s signature seasons in both basketball and football. You guys know and love Hill, so can you request a speech, like a state of disunion? Itā€™s a commodeY

Interesting tweet ā€¦ peek inside Fearneā€™s mindset around Zayā€™s play.

Who exactly can demand a bigger bag next year on this team??

True but I think Nick has shown he can play especially if he had pieces around him to knock down shots.

Yep, like the whole thing about the pack line defense. Just a variation on man-to-man that is erroneously credited to Dick Bennett.
