This is a scary game - they have 2 wins - one against Elon who tried to shock Carolina until the end and two decent losses. And of course they consider us a rival and they want to beat the âbig bullyâ the next county over.
Niners have played G-W three times, with most recent matchup a 78-70 Bulldog win in 2010. That game just happened to be Alan Majorâs debut. Didnât help that 4 Niners missed the 2010-11 season opener due to either injury or suspension. Plus Chris Braswell fouled out with 7+ minutes to go. Best forgotten.
Not sure the Niners and Runninâ Bulldogs are rivals and weâre definitely not their SB - they have already played Pitt and Tennessee this season - but would think G-W surely wants to beat those âcity slickersâ just up the road!
And another point: weâre the âbully â TWO counties over.
Another game that will be a part of Judyâs legacy. That was the game when we began the Alan Major Era with a Friday 4:00 tip to avoid conflict with volleyball.
Of course, loss didnât have anything to do with Dewhurst and Sherrill missing the game with injuries or Spears and Wilderness out due to suspension. And certainly not Braswellâs foul trouble and eventual DQ in 2nd half or Greenâs 5 for 21 FG stat line - including 1 for 12 on 3s.
Yep, four oâclock on a Friday definitely why the guys lost.
The 4pm Friday tip was ridiculous though. Who starts a season that way? And moving a season tip off game time for a revenue sport because of a non-revenue sport?
That was one of the dumbest decisions we have ever made. And the bar is set pretty high there.
There was a time when college MBB opening day was a 24 hour around the clock happening with the first tipoff at midnight. And this season began with CofC vs Southern Illinois on a neutral court in Sioux Falls, SD, at 11AM CT. Just saying.
Whatâs your problem Run? Why do dispute the irrational Judy hate with facts? Iâm surprised your post wasnât deleted.
Looks like the G-W rotation is 10 deep with a couple of double digit scorers and a 6-10 big who pulls down 8 rpg.
Never said that was why we lost.
It was just another example of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse we had going on at the time.
We had just fired Lutz and Judyâs brand new hire was about to make his 49er debut. What better way to show off the new hire than to showcase him on Friday afternoon at 4:00. We couldnât play at night because volleyball had the court reserved. It was their senior night.
Back then it was a big deal because people actually cared about going to Halton to see our marquee basketball program. I donât even think the game was televised.
OK, letâs say had the 2010 game had started 3 to 3 1/2 hours later, then maybe the guys would have shot better and Braswell wouldnât have been not so foul prone etc. So a hypothetical win would have meant an 11-19 season instead of 10-20.
I think you are missing the point
Oh, believe me, I understand the point very well.
Itâs one thing when you move a game for TV - which was why some of those other games Run mentioned were played so early. My recollection is that our game wasnât televised, which made the start time all that much more ridiculous.
Alan Major, at that time, deserved to have a full Halton sized crowd for his debut, not back seated to a Volleyball match.
It wasnât that big of a deal. I live in Asheville and I was at that game. Some people pretend but not much work gets done on Friday afternoons anyway
Iâll play along.
The game tips at 7:30 that night. The team plays inspired basketball encouraged by the nearly full Halton Arena. The Niners win with a buzzer beater from Colby Lewis in double OT. Under the falling confetti at Halton, Major grabs the microphone and screams âThe Niners are BACK!!â
The Niners ride the momentum and finish the season 16-14 and go to the NIT. The following years lead to multiple NCAA Tourney appearances, including a Final Four!!
Major never has his âhealth issuesâ and is still our head coach to this day, where the Niners play on âAlan Major Courtâ at Halton Arena.
Wonât disagree that start time was odd but it wasnât the reason the Niners lost. I just remember it being another opener and again another Niner suspended etc. Plus the irony of losing to a similarly initialed team as in 2003. I still remember taking a moment after that âGWâ game and saying out loud âWhat in the hell just happened?â to anyone listening.
You get out what you put in. Treat your revenue sports as if they are worth as much or less than your non-revenue sports, and donât be surprised when they perform that way.
