2024-25 49er MBB post-season poll: Fire Fearne?

Sanchez actually resigned on June 6, 2023, so over 3 months before the 2023-24 season. Bennett was the one who resigned just 2+ weeks before UVA’s first regular season game this year.

And players area given a 30 day window to transfer when a coach either resigns or is dismissed, regardless of when that occurs.

Didn’t Dishon want out but it was too late because all other teams already had full rosters?

He failed a physical at Nevada or New Mexico or somewhere and didn’t have anywhere else to go so he came back and got a pretty small NIL deal to do it.

He failed it at texas tech

I think Fearne is the best X’s and O’s guy we’ve had since Bobby. Really felt like he was bringing a knife to a gun fight this year. That said, he is the guy in charge of picking his weapon. But if all we give him is some toothpicks and hot glue, I’m not sure he’s going to come up with much.

Plus Fearne welcomed DJ back when he was under no obligation to do so. And ā€œfailedā€ physical is right up there with what happened with Mark Williams after the Lakers had 2nd thoughts in the Davis-Doncic trade.

That statement is relative to a fairly low bar but in fairness it’s accurate.

He does seem to be good at motivating the guys to play, though they still check out at times and he probably has to rip them a new one in the locker more often than he’d like to.

Biggest question from the Xs and Os side is if his system is the right one in this short term mercenary age of CBB. Several of our fans have questioned it, as have I.

I’m expecting a lot of changes this off-season, regardless. Taking a wait and see approach to whatever happens.

You have to keep him this early in the contract. Talent was our biggest issue this year. A combination of Kye giving us the middle finger and Oden not being healthy really hurt this team and it’s hard to change that on a shoestring budget.

Fearne is going to need to rework this roster into something that can win again. That probably means JUCO/Portal players that will be gone again in another year. Hopefully the collective is friendly to basketball program in the offseason. I can handle one off year, two will start to sour me fast on a coach.

IMO Fearne set up this roster as a band aid approach to buy time for future recruiting. Theres so much uncertainty on what course of action is best with portal and NIL. He signed lots of one year commitments to replace. He is officially on the clock for me moving forward with recruiting since I am a believer in his coachinh ability.

Yes, there is no excuses in terms of bringing in talent in this league, AAC.

Watch this second day of the tourney, there is a heck of a lot of good players in this league. That were one and dones, juco’s, bounce backs, low D1 etc…, we should be able to build a roster if the talent evaluation is there.

Yep, Matt said Fearne was held up coming out for post-game wrap-up on ESPN 730 because latter was on an extended rant about the transfer portal while meeting with the media.

I think most on this site are burned out by decades, now, of bad basketball. Not mediocre. Just plain, we suck, bad basketball, with seasons that amount to nothing. So we’re all tapped out. That’s watching, donating, caring.

Listening to fearne is refreshing. He gets it. The team did play hard this year, despite the record. I’d like to see him run it back one more year. But he’s right. You need money to get talent. Talent gets wins. Talent and coaching gets you championships.

If we flame out next year or our recruiting is suspect, whether or not you have the resources, I say start over. But fearne is a straight shooter and I’d play for him. Just wish he came along 10 years ago. But who knows, maybe he can get us going.

Mike Hill has some tough decisions ahead. My gut says he gets another year. I feel like Hill makes changes when the coaches lose the team. I don’t think fearne lost the team this year, despite the record.

Very challenging set of decisions, going into Year 3 (even Fearne mentioned this is year 7 in post game interview).

Do we know if he can build a roster, do we think this Style can be successful as we are in Year 7 of it?

He also said what we do on Offense is very difficult to defend, have we really seen that yet? Is next year the year?

I could not stand Ron or the vibe he gave off. I truly like Fearne and I hope he turns it around.

I do think you have to be realistic about the style you play in our situation. You have to consider what kind of talent you’re going to be able to land here. If you need specific player types that are in short supply or any part of your system has a steep learning curve, then you’ve lost before you even got started.

You have to look at where we finished amongst our peers in conference (Last) and also the NET rankings (currently #266) and look at where we end up and then look at the schools that did better than us. Fearne makes a shit ton of money. If I was Fearne, I’d be selling my self on more years too to continue the massive paycheck. Everyone would.

But the numbers don’t lie. Look at the teams ahead of us in the AAC and the NET. Why are we so bad compared to our peers and the other 265 teams?

Where is our compensation with the players on the floor vs others in our league . Thats the metric.

So other teams are better managed and have better luck?
