Has anyone seen any authoritative analysis on what the new roster limits are doing to the portal?
It seems to cut both ways.
There will be more scholarships available but fewer roster spots.
So players that donât get one of those coveted slots are SOL.
It seems to me itâs going to make the portal more risky.
Marshallâs entire team is set to hit the portal, leaving this question:
Looking over 2023 numbers for FBS scholarship players who hit the portal:
⢠73% transferred successfully with scholarship at new school (1,709 players)
⢠21% did not find a new destination (496 players)
⢠6% transferred without receiving scholarship at new school (129 players)
Among walk-ons (no scholarship) who transferred, 22% able to secure scholarship at new school (220 players).
As such, thatâs 1929 players overall getting scholarships at their new school.
NOTE: still looking for info on the percentage of FBS who entered portal in 2023. In 2021, it was 16%, which includes scholarship players and unaided walk-ons.
1 in 5 donât make it. The portal: worse odds than Russian Roulette.
Something I wish the numbers would reflect is voluntary vs non-voluntary portal entries. Pretty sure itâs much more of the former but would still be interesting to know how many are being run-off. Of course, coaches, ADs, etc arenât keen on that being a transparent metric.
Story about the average transfer make-up of FBS rosters in 2023, which was 20.5%. Niners mentioned as a programs going way past the average as almost 56% of last yearâs roster was comprised of transfers.

Absolutely. Id say its quite a bit easier but the quality of players you can attract here is also quite a bit higher

Wasnât he the star of Healyâs first recruiting class. That would be 6 years ago. Ridiculous that players have that many years in school.
