It is what it is. I’m not letting players leaving bring me down about us finally making a good hire.

You care about not spoiling a portal announcement?

I’m with you, 1979. Different generation maybe.

At this point, I am expecting everyone to leave. Might as well get used to the idea of a 2-10 season while Albin tries to rebuild the roster.

I’m not going to allow myself to be disappointed.

Why? He replaced 53 players from a 10 win team and won 10 again. In the portal era, you can reuild quickly

I’m just not going to let a bunch of 18-23 year olds ruin my enthusiasm about this hire.

It will not be long before the players discover that the portal is not necessarily their friend. When they chase $$$ they may find themselves riding the bench at a lower P5 when they can be starting at a G5. They will not impress the pros with less playing time. This is going to bite them in the ass if they are not stars in their own right.

Jumping around from team to team will not work long term. Same as in the work world. A person who continuously job-hops for $$$ ends up with issues over time.

This year’s portal is looking to be the most flooded ever.

I’m not sure that there will be a chair for every player entering it, let alone a better one.

It feels like this system is going to implode soon. The portal + unlimited, instant transfer = unsustainable madness.

I give you the following:

Elijah Spencer - Minnesota horrible Jr. year and fair senior season. His numbers were better with us.
Lu’cye Patterson - Minnesota - really bad numbers this year
Jack Hystera - Utah State - not a lot of playing time
Shadrick Byrd - no one picked him up
Rico Arnold - a bust at UMASS

There are some exceptions like Taylor Thompson and a few of our basketball players but it will implode and the lawsuits will fly when they have 7 years of school and no degree.

What % players get picked up? Sports Illustrated says only 50%.

  • 54% reported enrolling at a new school

  • 41% have not found a new school, are still looking, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport completely

  • 59% of scholarship transfers found a scholarship at a new FBS school

  • 8% left their scholarships and became walk-ons at a new school

  • 33% of players remain without a destination

  • 18% of walk-ons that transferred found a scholarship at a new school

  • About one-third of FCS transfers land a scholarship at a new school

  • 36% of FCS transfers find a new school to sign with at all

Those SI numbers are from an April 2022 piece. Must be something more up to date than stats from 2020 and 2021.

Also, the following is important to take into account:

There is a link at the end of the article that gives the 2023 numbers.

More from the NCAA:

Durell Robinson left us last year for Conn. and he is back in the portal this year

He had a decent season but it was with UCONN. He is obviously chasing $$$. I think that will catch up with him instead. After the way he did us, I wouldn’t give him air in a busted jug.
