2024 49er Football Transfer Portal

I’d recommend I-77 South to I-485. That stretch of Harris Blvd might make them turn around and head back!

And if you do have talent and can’t win - well you arent suddenly going to become a better leader and coach. We literally saw this exact thing in basketball with Alan Major.

Talent can be fixed. Being a crappy coach and leader can’t be fixed at his age.

Also Spring signing day can be big as kids see how far down the depth chart they are.

Agree that is great, 2 are withdrawals, which shows confidence in the program.

This was actually in the NY Times today from the Athletic some positive pub for us

So, how is Bill Belichick doing at North Carolina? No coach has done a better job convincing players who entered the portal to come back to school than him.

Of the more than 30 FBS players to withdraw their names, UNC leads the way with four, followed by Nebraska (2), Arkansas (2), UCF (2), Purdue (2), Fresno State (2) and Charlotte (2).

We’ve had 6 or 7 withdraw, including mcgee, who just withdrew

When you look at the portal, remember one thing. This year, teams need to reduce from ~120-125 players to 105. Say a P4 team has 125 players, including 40 walkons, and has to get to 105, all on scholarship. If they lose 25 because of used up eligibility, but add 25 Freshmen, they could push 30 players into the portal, then take 10 from the portal.

It’s a game of musical chairs. Those that don’t find a home quickly will ultimately figure out that they have given up their scholarship, and they won’t get another. Probably 3-4,000 players will end up without a scholarship when this is done. Many of those will be former P4 walkons, but some will be G5 player who used to have one.

This year only, there will be a plethora of players eager to find a home. The key in the end will be to find good ones, that can help the team. Next year, the situation will be the reverse. Next year, players who entered the system in 2020 (and who got an extra Covid year) will use up their eligibility. Also, players who entered the system in 2021 (and didn’t get an extra year) will also use up their eligibility. Thus, there will be double attrition, and all teams will be looking to grab extra players from the portal. Next year, players lost to the portal will be hard or impossible to replace, but this year, it should not be a major problem.

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas. Don’t spend it sweating about the portal. It will all work out fine, this year.

Yes, I think Loftis is exciting. I think he will be a great fit for Albin’s offense. He hasn’t run the ball much, but he’s mobile, and he could run an occasional option play. If you look at ESPN’s QBR rating, which includes passing, but also other factors for quarterbacks, such as penalties and rushes, Loftis had an average QBR in 2023 of 60.1, not bad at all. By contrast, in 2024, Purdie had a QBR of 29.5, which, to be honest, is terrible. That ranks him as the 14th best QB in the AAC, while at 60.1, Loftis would have been 6th best.:

I’m extremely optimistic about Loftis.

Hopefully our coaching takes a leap next year and they can actualize the talent we have.

For some reason I have a vision of the kid who was at USM as talented as well. I may have watched him play as a freshman or something.

If he pans out and we can get a third QB with something to offer we may have a talented QB room.

I’m going to assume we will see more than one qb next year due to hopefully a few nicks and scrapes and not any serious injury.

Not sure why Moko hasn’t been picked up, but I am looking for that moment when the roster limits reality starts to hit for some of these transfers. There are now an even more limited # of FBS spots.

I told him he should come back to Charlotte.

Love this! He did not get enough opportunities on the offensive side of the ball. I look forward to seeing what the new staff can do to use his abilities better
