Good breakdown. And yep, I almost posted last week that I figured we would hold some slots for FBS transfers still seeking a home, including potentially one or two more withdrawals.
Did Albin have to replace his kicker in any recent seasons? Thatâs a position I figured he would have already filled.
Or maybe he is planning on depending on one of the holdovers?
Of those that moved on, biggest star potential is omega Blake.
The kickers were both quite good.
Purdie could be, but he has serious work to do on his short and intermediate game. His long ball is beautiful, but having a talented, and fast WR like Blake certainly helped out there.
Hasard didnt transfer, he graduated. Blake could definitely be really good at arkansas, our kicker should do well at cincy, purdie will in time be good but needs development. Never underestimate how poorly coached these guys were under biff, and how they could thrive with a real coach. Additionally, Weber, mcdaniel, and stanley will be starters at a minimum at their new schools
Oops, thanks on Hassard. Fixed it. That makes it 13 players to P4.
Of all the positions, special teams players are the most apt to be fully used, I think, so my guess would be that Cunanan, Rusnak, and Booker will all âstartâ. You are probably right that Blake will also start, and may well be a star. I suspect that many of the others will find themselves playing, but in a backup role. Better NIL money, but less PT.
As for when Iâm thinking for âlateâ additions, it could be any time this spring, even after spring practice. By then Albin will have a better idea what he actually needs, and there will be some good players with no home that will be very receptive to any offer, with or without NIL. So far the portal transfers are pretty much dispersed across the entire team, as you would expect, since they really donât know the players they have yet. This is almost 1 player per position:
Offense: 12=QB 3, RB 1, WR 4, TE 1, OL 3
Defense: 12= DL 1, DE/Edge 3, LB 3, CB 3, S 2
Special Teams: 1= LS 1
That is actually a very shrewd recruiting strategyâŚ
EarlyâŚtake the studs from lower divisions (FCS, D2, JUCO) that arenât looking for NIL but for opportunities to shine on a bigger stage.
LateâŚafter all of the high priced primadonnaâs find homes and rosters are full and a ton of players still need homesâŚplay the supply/demand game. Look at the P4/P5 transfers that gambled and lost in the portal and need a landing spot to re-prove their worth. AgainâŚwithout the need to outbid NIL. Bargain shopping at itâs finest.
A player gives up his scholarship when he goes into the portal. He gambles that he will get a better deal, a scholarship and NIL on top. Something like 1/3 of the players who enter the portal will get no offer at all. A player that gets no offer at all (or who declines the ones he gets, hoping for a better one) is out of football, or maybe can walk on and pay his own way. For a player in this group, the late offer of a scholarship even without NIL may look very, very good. And yes, with thousands of players in the portal, there will definitely be some players who are good, but just donât catch anyoneâs eye.
Because their goal is D1. Didnât say they donât look for NIL laterâŚbut I can promise you the primary thought on a JUCO/D2/FCS kidâs mind is a bigger stage. But if NIL were to come into play for these guysâŚitâs a fraction of what the G5/P4 transfer portal guys are looking for. A fraction.
Itâs a shrewd play to target them for that reasonâŚnot sure how hard that concept is to comprehend.
Honestly I donât think any of them will be stars at their next stop, at least immediately. Even Blake. Elijah Spencer was an amazing WR here and really took at back seat at Minnesota. The players on the transfer list this year werenât all that great here. They were fine. But the team sucked and all of them have glaring issues.
The one with the most potential is Purdie but he really needs a few years of development by a strong staff to turn into a legitimate threat.
Also, no kicker becomes a star. Cunanan and Rusnack were good but kickers arenât the players people salivate over.
He finished the season 2nd in yards and led in receiving TDs for the teamâŚI wouldnt say he took a back seat. He just chose to play somewhere that doesnt have a strong passing attack for whatever reason.
Have a nephew who went to NC State, where he was in the marching and pep bands. The football team had a kicker - Chris Dunn - who by his final season with the Wolfpack set team, ACC, and NCAA records, including the one for all time FGs made with 97. Named all conference, All-American, and recipient of the Lou Garza award for best national place kicker in 2022.
