2024 49er Football Week 6 - Game #6 vs ECU 10/5 3:30PM ESPNU

Not yet, not at all. A good start but against a bad team

Hopefully we’ll reach the mediocre threshold sooner than later. Anyway, I had forgotten how long ECU was an independent after they made the move to I-A football in the 1970s following a nice run in the SoCon. Also interesting that both schools first victory in football came against Campbell - albeit 80 years apart!

Sure has been nice not to have read from our nay sayers today bitching about everything that is wrong.

Sure was nice to see us play at a level that didn’t warrant bitching.

It’s surprising that with all the small schools around us with football programs that we never tried to start one of our own before the 2000s. I’m excluding the team in the 40s because it was so short lived.

Bingo.

ECU’s fifth quarter show is entertaining! The melt down was epic. Kind of envious of 3 1/2 hours of non-stop melt-down and then kind of glad we don’t have it. I learned all kind of things that weren’t true like Deshawn Purdie had never played until yesterday so the Pirates had no film on him. Our NIL is tops in the AAC. Seriously?? Do we even have much NIL at all?? So proud of this statement win. Great weekend to be a Niner!

Very happy with the result and pumped. BUT, why do some of our fan base seemingly talk down about other schools? Cuts both ways. IMHO we should all stfu and enjoy days like Saturday. Just my $.02

Rivalry is a good thing, as long as no one is poisoning trees etc.

Now, if you really want to experience fans going over the top, attend a CLTFC match at BofA. Specifically, get a seat in the Supporters section. Pretty crazy!

I don’t think ā€œsurprisingā€ is the word when considered against our leadership. In my view, the leadership is extremely cautious and calculated, and I mean that in a good way.

If UNC Charlotte is going to do something, it is going to do it right. Once it is started, it is like Pandora’s Box in that it cannot be undone. I don’t think we’ve hardly ever had any leadership that wanted to rock the boat, and it always wanted to make absolutely sure a move was the right one. – But they still left the mostly undeveloped rec fields there as if it was preordained to be the stadium’s ground when the time revealed itself.

The University was not going to start football without its hand being forced by a passionate group of alumni and students, primarily from the incubator that is NNN. This solved the concern of the cautious in itself because the greatest risk of a new, very expensive program is lack of support.

The support was clearly there, and the burden of having authorized the huge move was removed from the leadership by our student vote, which was the largest in the history of the 17-campus UNC system. And again, this indicates the requisite support to make the massive addition not be leadership stepping outside its very strict code of conduct.

The Gold Standard is and has been measured, calculated, and low-risk.

Was trying to find a list of football teams getting started or, like the Niners and ODU, resurrected after being discontinued decades ago. Found a Wiki page noting the latter for all divisions of the NCAA and NAIA but not the former.

Anyway - after some Googling - find that the Niners are definitely part of a 21st century collegiate gridiron movement. Listed below are when some programs began play:

• CHARLOTTE (1946-48) 2013
• Campbell (1925-50) 2008
• Coastal Carolina 2003
• Georgia State 2010
• Kennesaw State 2015
• Old Dominion (1930-40) 2009
• South Alabama 2009
• UT Rio Grande Vly (1927-50) 2025

Not going to watch that whole thing, but hilarious how the hosts are struggling to hold back laughs in response to the early calls

Just watched the highlights again. Does the espn 3d logo for Charlotte irritate anyone else? It infuriates me way more than it probably should.

I’m in Candler. Just dealing with downed trees here. Very fortunate. Took water and food to a coworker in Fairview off old fort rd a few days after the storm. It was tough to see. How are you doing?

Know what…I know how those 5th Quarter fellas feel…I imagine before the ECU game our fan base wasn’t too far from those emotions…forget their ignorant comments about Charlotte etc, but if you just listen to the fan comments about their team…well, if we’re being honest, how many have said the same about Biff and Mike Hill?

If I’m being honest, I want ECU to be good, I want Appy to be good (sorry, just choked on a bit of vomit typing that)…because when they’re good, beating them feels even better. Plus, ECU, same conference, I want the conference to be good.
