per his agent @DanielPoneman

Hold on a sec, did I miss where the players can now sign with agents and still play college ball?

I mean, it fits with all the other mercenary ridiculousness, but I didn’t realize that was part of it. Before, IIRC, you could declare for the NBA draft but you could return to school if you withdrew by a certain date AND DIDN’T HIRE AN AGENT.

Guess that’s another line we have crossed.

guess so, I didn’t realize that either

It’s literally just the 5-year pros now. Professional basketball with an arbitrary 5-year eligibility limit.

At some point someone is going push against that eligibility requirement.

I’ve deleted typed responses about this twice now because I really don’t care that much, but this is pretty funny actually:

ā€œCollegeā€ basketball has lost the plot so bad, I’d been thinking about a ā€œcollegeā€ league with no limitation on playing years. It just seems so weird. But now thinking about it, if they removed the limit on years of eligibility, there’d be such a surplus of good players hanging around the ā€œcollegeā€ league, you couldn’t possibly have all these transfers.

I was laughing thinking about some Chia Pet hair cut old dude with a head band shooting free throws in the NCAA tournament and the commentators mentioning how, ā€œā€¦ in his 15th season, he’s setting the NCAA record for oldest player ever to reach the Final Four.ā€ :joy:

The whole system is such a mockery now, it’s really not that bad of an idea. Imagine if we could have paid Leemire more than those pro leagues. Players get paid, and schools & fans can end up with ā€œfranchiseā€ players who earn a triple PhD in the meantime.

ā€œā€¦now earning his 7th full Bachelor of Science, he’s a polymath, polylinguist, polysport – a true Bo Jackson on the court and off the court. In his 10th season with the university, he began pinch hitting for the baseball team. He tried out for the Track & Field team last year just to show he still could. In a few years, he’s hoping to get his son on the basketball team with him.ā€

Yeah I didn’t realize it is going to be Braswell’s 7th season. That is nuts.

I know we contacted Styles during his initial foray in the portal but didn’t see anything this time around. Anyway, will be a good bit closer to home in the Triangle than the QC.

FWIW, in spite of apparently losing out on Davis, Michigan landed 4 players this weekend.

It’s really hard to understand what some of these players are looking for. Being on a successful team doesn’t seem to matter. I guess some could be looking for more playing time or more money. Even Duke lost 7 players and I’m sure they have very good NIL and are playing for one of the most successful blue bloods in the country. I really think for a lot of them it comes down to wanting the attention that comes from being recruited. I know some are just looking for what they think is a better situation for themselves but it’s getting really hard to believe there are this many players in bad situations.

Yeah I think it’s almost all money related and they have agents and middle men out there looking for more bidding against each other and driving the price up.

clt says leaving Duke mbb is absurd if you are playing. that degree can open more doors than $25k more in NIL

For most kids getting that degree is worth more over a lifetime than whatever nil the majority of these kids are getting.
