No. Nil is a necessity or you end up with team of berry’s and sterling young’s.
Igor is an NBA talent if he continues his development path, IMO. But he has to keep his effort up.
The NCAA probably should have done more to prevent the current situation but I’m not blaming them for the problems with NIL and the portal. They had guardrails that prohibited using NIL to recruit and unlimited transfers were not allowed. Both of those were shot down in court. The only way to make those 2 things possible is contracts a tampering rules that are probably only going to happen by making players employees. I’m not sure an athletic department like ours can afford that but it’s probably the only way rules like that won’t keep getting ruled unconstitutional in court. Even though athletes were fine with those rules and what they received in return for 50+ years.
So you think Lu’cye Patterson should have gotten a bag?? He avg 5pts per game at Missouri State…is he a Berry or a Sterling Young??? He didn’t get a bag (rightfully so)…but came here to play. PT was his bag.
DJ was injured and no one wanted to pay him a bag…hell, he tried to go to another school and they didn’t want him WITHOUT a bag. Was he a Berry or a Sterling Young?? Again…PT was his bag and earned him a bag. Wouldn’t have gotten neither without coming here.
Also…60% of the portal players that transferred to a P6 team saw their minutes and ppg DROP…yeah that’s gonna get them into the league. But…they got a bag.
Players that want to play for a bag can do that…but there are players in the portal whether injured or underutilized or in a bad system or recruited over and getting no PT. Just like recruiting HS kids…you’re gonna hit on some and miss on some but there are studs out there that are under the radar. And if they are under the radar…you don’t need a bag to get em. Promise an upgraded opportunity for PT and exposure and they will come. Why? because they can’t get a bag where they’re at…but come star for us and you will.
We’re gonna lose our studs anayway…proven that even WITH an NIL we can’t keep MARGINALLY GOOD (not even star) talent…so why bother?
Bring in the injured (DJ) or the underutilized (Patterson) and tell them…get your PT and your success here…then chase your bag if you want to.
No, i meant in terms of paying big to igor, when it is possible to keep them. Gus like lucye should get paid but not overpaid. You have to spend for hood players, no way around it
Igor and DJ were very solid players…but neither was a stud…neither a program changer… they averaged 12.8 & 11.4 pts per game…but we couldn’t keep them with our NIL (which is supposed to be pretty good), right??
If our NIL can’t keep players averaging 12 pts per game…what do we use NIL to do exactly? Keep our role players!?!
Is someone knocking down the door of our entire roster of role players that avg 6-10 pts per game in the AAC to PAY them!?!
I agree that using NIL to KEEP players and not recruit them from other teams is how to use it…but if our collective isn’t good enough to keep Igor or DJ this year…it’s apparently not useful for that either.
Just trying to figure out the value we get for paying our mid-tier players to stay and who is offering our mid-tier players and how much??
I find it hard to believe that a P5 is clamoring to pay money for our mid tier players that we need NIL to keep them here.
If NIL was used to bring in a STUD…or keep our 2-3 best players…OK.
But if ours can’t do that…why bother??
Back when teams paid guys under the table they didn’t pay everyone, just the studs. One really good player and some guys that can be mediocre will get us to the tournament.
I really don’t think any amount of money was going to keep DJ here. I don’t think he ever wanted to be here in the first place he just didn’t have any P5 options after he failed his physical at Texas Tech. It’s a risk you take with P5 drop downs. They are always going to want to get back there. I guess that pretty much goes for all players but the guys coming up from a lower level probably appreciate being here a little more.
clt says it isn’t confirmed that Igor is gone

Did you mean to put this in the hoops coaching thread?

5 million a year. A million per position. Calipari leaves Kentucky for Arkansas. Thats where we are at.
Whats the pay scale of a 15 - 30 first round pick? A second round pick??
A million per year is half of the lowest 1st round draft pick, per that link.
The ridiculous part of that question is that we are now competing with the NBA instead of just a bunch of cheaters in Chapel Hill, etc.
It’s not sustainable. College programs can’t do it.
It has now come down to who wants to spend the most to buy a team. There will be a lot of the future P2 that don’t want to get involved in this type of bidding wars
