2025-26 49er MBB Game #1 vs Indiana State 11/3 8PM ESPN+

Took 50 years but now lead the series 2-1 with Larry Bird U. BTW, that 1974-75 Niner team won 23 games.

Niners win and Cowboys lose. A great night! :basketball: :american_football:

Yes that 74-75 team should have gotten an NIT invite, but were snubbed. I thought that team was probably better than the 75-76 team that went to the NIT finals. Should have won that game. As for the 76 NIT invite, I think Lee Rose’s connections to Adolph Rupp helped us get a well deserved NIT bid that year.

Anyone know why he is not playing tonight

Bonke looked great, really impressed. Can play defense and offense, athletic and played in the paint! Bradford reminded me of Williams, very crafty on offense. Also glad Fearne has seemed to speed up the game so much more enjoyable to watch, thanks for this!

The not so good; the rest of the newcomers were really indistinguishable, not so sure i would take this observation and say we are ā€˜deeper’, but lets see. Bit disappointed after some of the hype, but lets see.

Finally Indiana st was not very good and really bad in the last 10 mins of the game. Not sure i would conclude it was because of our defense. But lets take the W!

Matt snd Trevor were making comparisons between Bradford and Jon Davis, who was at game and - per Fearne postgame - spent time with the team leading up to tonight.

Had fun at the game last night even though it was a late game. Lots of new faces and good athleticism overall. I like that we had multiple guys (in multiple rotations) that can score and we did not rely on Branford’s amazing night to get us over the line.

Seem to have decent depth and size but the defense was messy. Likely a symptom of so many new players, new coaches and the first game but we need to tighten that up quickly. If we can average 80+ a game and play better D, then maybe we win more than we lose this year.

I still like Fearne and really, really hope he can get this team to gel and play well this year.

Are the media even in the same room during post game Q&A? :winking_face_with_tongue:

Good teams win, great teams cover

The sun is brighter, the grass is greener, and everything feels better when the niners win. I know its night one, and we don’t know much about our team, or their team, but that looked like a solid athletic group. They have some learning to do, and meshing on the defensive end, but it looks like we have a decent roundball club.

It was fun to head back over to their board and watch somebody else’s fans melt down for a change. I could get used to it.

What was the attendance like? How were the students?

Looking good. Only downside was on free throws, and the bench only contributed 7 points. Lots of potential for this team.

I was at the game. Initial impressions.

The good:

Way more athletic than we have been in years

Bradford can play. Reminds me of Davis and Young

Anton can play and is very athletic for 7’2

Aren’t relying on one guy. Multiple guys can get their shot

Loved seeing team, Fearne was letting it play out, getting on each other for missed d assignments. Showed guys cared and were coaching each other up

Kept turnovers lower than years past

Better offensively overall than last 6 years

Needs Improvement:

Missed assignments on D led to easy drives and passes inside

Poor Free Throw shooting

Got away from offense and went one on one a bit too much paid for it with dry spell end of half

15 was whining a bit too much for me Needs to play as he flashed some great potential

My initial thoughts

Very pleased with what I watched last night, especially that the offense is no longer just running thru the center standing at the top of the key; drives to the basket were typically producing something (rebounds, points, fouls). Very impressed with Eyenga and Bonke. I knew Mingo would be very soild, but Bradford has truly upped his game.

Generally, very happy indeed. All most people know about this team is it was picked last…that’s not a last place team.

Moving forward, win the games we should, steal some that perhaps we shouldn’t, and this could be a very good year. Bring on Belmont Abby!!!

I will agree with everyone else…that was a lot of fun! The student section looked great on TV but in typical ESPN+ fashion little to no crowd mics. We have size and can score. That’s wonderful. It wasn’t perfect obviously but it’s the first game. Lets do it again Friday!

We’re bigger and much more athletic. Seem to score the ball a ton easier. FTs could be better. Our guards need to do a better job stopping the dribble drive in man to man. Our bigs have to leave their guy and it leads to some easy looks.

overall a really good start. Looks like we have a chance to be pretty competitive

15 is Ethan Butler. In post game, Fearne said he has been battling through an injury so still a bit rusty.

I am all about Fearne’s Australian offense. That was way more fun to watch. More tempo, and definitely better athletes than the last few years. Will be nice to have the other bigs back to see what Fearne considers to be a more physical game. Bonke probably had to hold back somewhat last night since we didn’t really have a second option behind him. +22 scoring when he was in the game vs. not according to the Observer article. I’m also very happy that he didn’t flop in game 1 wearing #49. That was certainly a choice, and not necessarily one I was excited about.

Definitely a nice moment between Fearne and Sterling at the end. Nice to see him playing, didn’t quite understand the taunts at the end from the students. It’s not like he crushed it here and chased a bag. Dude wasn’t going to play, so he found a place he would. Good for him.

Yes, I meant to post this. For the folks being critical of Fearne playing Princeton offense, he made it a point to mention in the post game that we aren’t running that this year. We are running his offense he ran in Australia.

This! Fearne also mentioned that we had 2 big men (Mading and Gomez) that were out tonight. Oguche also didn’t play (I’m really curious what he brings to the table). Thought Bonke started out aggressively but eased up a bit after he picked up 2 fouls. That depth should allow him to get after it more.

Morning after, I’m pretty stoked. I don’t think Fearne is done cooking, but I like the ingredients. If we can pull the defense together, there is no way this team finishes in the bottom of the American. With a little luck and some hard work, we could really surprise.
