2025-26 49er MBB Game #1 vs Indiana State 11/3 8PM ESPN+

I liked Oguche in the exhibition. I don’t think he scored a lot, but he looked capable. He stuck out because he comes in cold off the bench and the first trip down court, he buries a 3.

We have a lot of options on this team. I don’t envy Fearne having to keep them happy with playing time.

I didn’t realize he changed the offensive scheme to that. That makes me so much more excited

Don’t have to keep them happy with playing time if the team keeps winning.

Yeah, this is what I wanted last year and I gotta think maybe it had something to do with a couple of our assistants moving on in the offseason.

So glad we have shed that offense. I think in this era of NIL you need to play something that’s easier to pickup and is also exciting.

We are deep. Haven’t been this pumped for a Niner team in years.

Fearne appeared to be coaching them hard. They were getting after each other and holding each other accountable.

they have the depth and athleticism to compete this year if Fearne does a good job coaching and they have good injury luck.

I was shocked Spencer Elliot did not get time before Richart.

my impression is we have more good players than minutes to go around. It’s been a while since I could say that. It’s a good problem to have.

I agree on Spencer. I thought he looked good in the exhibition.

I thought the guy from SC (Conyers?) might play more. Did he play much in the exhibition?

Same with football

Just for reference. Preseason ISU picked to finish #8 or #9 in the MVC (depending on the source). Basically says they have good size and can score but need to improve defense to move up in that league.

The Missouri Valley Conference chose to only release a Top 5 instead of a full MVC Preseason Poll this season.

And there were also no Preseason All-Conference teams named by the MVC- only a 39-player “Watch List”-

But, Paul Oren, the very good beat writer for Valparaiso, contacted all the beat writers and student sports reporters he could reach for each MVC school and did a poll- 20 people voted. Here is how the 11 MVC teams ranked in his “unofficial” MVC Media Poll (#1 votes in parentheses followed by total votes)

  1. Illinois State (14) - 210
  2. Northern Iowa (1) - 181
  3. Bradley (2) – 167
  4. Murray State (2) – 164
  5. Belmont - 148
  6. Drake (1) – 129
  7. Southern Illinois – 89
  8. UIC – 80
  9. Indiana State – 66
  10. Valparaiso – 44
  11. Evansville - 41

He did get time in the exhibition. Looked athletic.

Struggled in exhibition. Looked a bit lost in defense. He will get there

While it’s true that Sfera and Smith both left for programs faster paced than what the Niners have been the past several years, there were other factors in play as well. For the former there was a faith component involved, as well as the fact he also has ties to Tennessee as a Memphis grad. For the latter, it included joining a new staff in a hoops-centric conference that he’s very familiar with as both a player and coach.

Not sure about pure athleticism but we are definitely quicker. I like the fast agressive offense.

A couple of times we were pretty small other than Bonke. 4 Guards and Bonke.

Maybe we can get away with that against most American conf teams as long as we can hit some 3’s.

Same comment as others on the defense, their guard penetrated and dished for easy baskets to often.

We can win some games with this team. If we stay healthy we should be able to finish top 5 in conference. A big improvement.

This is the biggest team, on paper, that we have had in years.

We were missing 6’8, 6’9, and 6’11 last night, which is why Fearne had to play Richart or a small lineup.

Also, the smallest players on our roster are Villar and Freeman, both listed at 6’3.
