2025 49er Football Players leaving

I thought it was Stokes that had the fumble issues? I like Gainey, but I thought he got hurt. He seemed a bit light side to be an every down back.

Both did

1-11. I’m not too concerned about any of them leaving

Yamil Talib commits to Colorado. Tough loss for us, but on to the next.

Yeah bummer. He had potential.

Even a bad team has some good players. Pretty much every player I didn’t want to lose is gone, so Charlotte will have to start over from scratch next year. You have to wonder if some of them made mistakes, though. Talib has potential, but it’s still raw. At Charlotte, he’d have started, and been a star, while at Colorado, he may be a backup, and may not play as much as he would have played at Charlotte. Time will tell, though. I wish him well.

It’s very frustrating when young players like that leave. He wasn’t anything great at this point but showed promise and got a lot of experience this year. I had a lot of hope for that young defensive line coming back next year but now it’s nearly starting over from scratch again. Very few players want to work towards building a program and making it something better anymore. They just want to go somewhere better or somewhere that pays them more. Talib was a walkon at Ok State and we gave him a scholarship and playing time as a freshman. I really don’t wish any of them well. These 1 year rentals couldn’t care less about Charlotte so the feeling is mutual.

It is all coming down to who is capable of spotting the best talent with the leftovers. We either have the coaches to do it or they are not the answer. This coming year tells us cos’ it ain’t gonna get much better in the short term.

It’s day 3, most guys have not committed yet, and players are still entering the portal. Take a step back

I agree with this. These were 1 year rentals, nothing more, and you can’t build a program based on that. In fact, they didn’t even stay a year, more like 8 months. Time as a 49er:

Talib - 4/27/25 to 1/2/26

Simpson - 5/7/25 to 1/2/26

Nicholas - 4/28/25 to 1/2/26

Boyd - 4/29-25 to 1/2/26

You can’t build a program that way. So, what did work?

  1. Not one Freshman recruited in 2025 left.
  2. None of the lower division players who aren’t out of eligibility left (Young, Willis, Shirley)
  3. None of the G5 player who aren’t out of eligibility left (Startz, Bowman, Schmitz, Hampton, Williams, Kaba, Brooks, Solomon)
  4. Only one JUCO left, Wilcke, and that was completely understandable
  5. All P4 players who transferred in for the entire Spring Semester stayed (Loftis, Harrell, McGowan, Gill)

So, the exodus seems to be P4 players who came in late, and missed winter conditioning, and all the team-building activities during winter/spring. Some P4 players who arrived late did stay, at least so far (Miles, Green, Irving, and Cobb), so the losses of late P4 transfers were 50%.

The other group that had a fair amount of transfers out are players from before Albin, particularly ones who played little, but there were also several from that group who played a lot who left (Gibson, Grant, Burris, Clipper, Gainey).

The methods that seem to still work, sort of, is recruiting quality Freshmen, and getting transfers in early, and then coaching them up, and building them into a team, so that they have an attachment to each other, and to Charlotte. The bad news is that this approach takes time, and Albin doesn’t have time. The good news is that, based on the existing portal offers, Albin is not panicking. Most of the existing offers are to underclassmen, not to Seniors/Graduate students who would be one and done.

Javen Nicholas is visiting Wake Forest

Hadn’t really looked into it but it is good to hear that all of Albin’s high school recruits have stayed so far. I do think for our program that is the best way to build a solid foundation.

Could care less where those leaving Charlotte visit or sign with unless its the NFL. Once they give up on Charlotte, I give up on them!

Coach, not a player, but here works as well as anywhere else.
