Ughhh…
Damnit. This one hurts.
Looks like another start from scratch year
Every team loses some top guys. No reason to think we’d be immune from that
Expect that every year. This process has to be exhausting for coaches.
Yeah, this will probably shorten some coaching careers due to burnout.
No disrespect, but what top guys do we have? we were 1-11, the second worst team in FBS.
I’m with elvis, we didn’t win an FBS game… recruit over all of them.
Nicholas is/was a real talent. He was the first portal casualty that actually bothered me. Would take him back in a heartbeat.
It’s sustainable as long as there are players to fill the rosters of all the teams and the teams can pay the rent.
beyond that it’s simply a matter of how well the coaches evaluate talent, use whatever NIL they have available and how well they do their job coaching.
I am a vocal proponent for a new D2 so we have more of a level playing field. But I have no expectation that there will be any roster stability for anyone in the G6 or below ever again.
It’s impacting lots of P4 schools as well. It’s not just G6 and below.
I meant our top guys. We had some good players that I’d like to keep. Also, continuity can be important

Nicholas and Simpson are the only 2 players I would like to have back. Boyd too but he can be replaced relatively easily. The other players can be upgraded too but it would have been nice to have them back for another year to have more continuity
Same- that’s one that stings. We do need a lot of new talent but we also need to retain some pieces. He was one I was hoping we could keep.
Continuity matters especially on the offensive line. Players do improve, it’s just hard to see because they are playing for different teams every year now. I hate what college sports have become.
Is it weird that he highlighted Turner and Fitch and did not mention Albin at all?
As mentioned above, the departures that bother me most so far are Simpson and Nicholas. Boyd was good, but it seems to be a given these days that if you have decent kicker, you will lose him. Clipper and Grant were solid players, too, who will probably get some PT somewhere.
Even though Charlotte was bad last year, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t some good players. There are still players not in the portal that I am hoping stay. On offense that includes Eley, McGowan, Green, Shirley, McGee, Young, Harrell, Cobb, Gainey, and Stokes. On defense that includes Williams, Tifase, Kaba, Doss, Solomon, Irving, Miles, Talib, Schmitz, Bowman, Willis, Startz, Clinkscales, Womack, and Gill. The other player I’d hate to lose is Long, who might have been the MVP last year with his awesome punting.
The sad thing about some of these portal losses is that it shows just how hard it is to build a culture. Several of these players only had a pit-stop in Charlotte for a matter of months. Nicolas, Boyd, and Simpson didn’t commit to Charlotte until after Spring Practice, and they are gone already, even before the end of the calendar year. By my count, there are now 63 returning players for next year, and I expect a few more of them going into the portal. How can you build much culture when you have barely half a team return, and have to replace the other half each year?
This new world seriously decreases the fun of being a fan. What I enjoyed most was watching young players come in, and develop into good players a few years later. That’s a thing of the past.
Edit - (Note that I’m not saying that any of the players I want back will be starters. I’m saying they are players who have potential, and who can contribute, and who can get better. The coaches should be trying to add the best players possible from the portal, and there is no one on the team who is a guaranteed starter. )
Rod Gainey has entered the transfer portal.
Has some talent but has not showcased much of it yet and has not been consistent. He also ran behind an average NC HS offensive line.
Also benched due to fumbling
