Mcgowans to portal
Seems kinda late to enter the portal. Wonder why take the risk with your scholarship.
He should get decent offers, despite the injury, based on his speed and production at vandy. I imagine bowers realized je was getting squeezed out.
Both McGowan and Bowers were listed as out of eligibility. Last year McGowan was a Senior, and Bowers was listed as 6th year. I have always guessed that McGowan would get another year, since, due to injury, he only had stats in one game. I never guessed that Bowers would get another year, though, as I thought that he played half the season. Oh well. Good luck to them in their future endeavors.
Brooks is another one who entered the portal today, and he also had been out of eligibility. He was a R-Sr last year.
According to 247 sports, cheney, davis, Simpson, willis, samples have withdrawn from portal. I know samples withdrew but is giving up football, but if this is accurate, that is huge
Is Cheney eligible? Getting Devin Davis, WIllis, and Simpson back would be great news. If Cheney is eligible, and can actually play a year for Charlotte, that would be a huge addition, but i seriously doubt that will happen. It’s also possible that Cheney withdrew because of eligibility issues.
WR-Ta’ir Brooks is in the portal for Charlotte
Yes, I mentioned Brooks above. Bowers, Brooks, and McGowan, must have heard today that they had been granted another year of eligibility; all entered the portal today.
With Bowers, Brooks, and McGowan all getting an extra year yesterday and heading for the portal, I have to wonder if anyone else was granted an extra year and decided to stay? Earlier it was reported that Gus McGee expected to get an extra year, and planned to stay. Did he get his year? What about anyone else, perhaps Rutledge, King, or Olson?
Per 247, Jonathon Okate to the portal, and Andrew Cunningham to North Texas.
Edit:
Devin Davis is back in the portal.
Andrew Bennett to JMU
That one is not surprising.
Why did he wait so late to enter?
Perhaps Stokes didn’t decide to leave until Charlotte added Perteet and Williams in the last week?
In any case, it appears that this portal season won’t be much different than normal, despite the double attrition. Thousands are still in the portal, only hundreds of spots are left. 29 Charlotte players went into the portal this year, so far 13 have spots (6 P4, 5 G6, 2 FCS) , and 2 more have reported offers. I’m guessing that when it’s done, about 1/4 of those who went into the portal will end up with no school, which is about what happens every year.
The portal chews these players up and spits them out. All the focus is on the very small % of players who get more money or at least more visibility, but at the cost of literally thousands being pushed out, usually at the urging of an unqualified or underqualified person holding themselves out as an agent (there’s no license requirement). A good # of these players find themselves scrambling to get back on the roster of the program they left when they see the reality. At some point the focus is going to shift to all the casualties of the system. It’s very cruel and duplicitous. If it helps - imagine one of those kids is yours.
In Hunter’s recent article, he says there are only 1200 Scholarship FBS players left in the portal. Assuming that is correct, that shows how dramatically different this year is, with the double attrition. If FBS teams, on average need 4-5 more players each, that’s 600 more players who will end up in FBS. Some of those will come from Division II, and some from FCS, of course, but it is also true that some of the 1200 FBS players will find homes in Division II or FCS. This year it may only be ~600 FBS players who end up out of football. In a normal year, I think it’s usually a much higher number.
As far as players getting chewed up and spit out, the double attrition is a one year phenomenon, so next year will likely rebound and be worse than normal. Players will look back at this year and think “The portal isn’t so bad. Most players found new homes.”
