Everyone is talking about hope in the sense that we are building.
The false starts, holding calls, pitch-fumble, dropped pass and whatever else are fine. Thatâs a team that is trying its best and starting out on a clean sheet.
Itâs the play calling that is killing me. All curls and screens or a run up the middle. We were not calling winning football. 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter down an abominable number of points and weâre running the ball and throwing screens?? Itâs as if we were playing to lose. Why are we bleeding the clock at this point? Those plays are fine if youâre in the 1Q or winning the game. The only real throw down the field was when the backup was in and it was called for PI. Got us down the field, but it was a solid throw.
Nothing in that playcalling lead to me being hopeful. It was all such nonsense. The pace of play was super slow despite being down so much so late. Itâs time to go big. Our only big plays were on 4th down and they worked each time.
The fans absolutely held their own. Iâm sure those silly little Appies donât think so. But whatever.
All we need is for the people that get paid to show up they way that the paying customer does. Coaches want big contracts? Players want to get paid? Great youâre all pros. Now, do the damn job. That was piss poor preparation and effort. Not going to cut it.
I thought our fan support was wonderful and the program let them down..again. If we can ever produce wins the fans will be there. Great crowd last night!
I donât have much to add. We didnât look good on either side of the ball. Defense, especially in the secondary, got lit up. No pressure on the QB. Offense had some good individual moments but no consistency. Turnovers were bad and too many false start penalties. I hate being 0-4 vs App.
Coaching staff will obviously make adjustments so hopefully we see some improvement (maybe not next week but hopefully going forward).
Losing the game is one thing, getting owned is another.
App had same situation new coaching staff and almost same number of new players. I donât buy any of the âtraditionâ stuff given the NIL landscape.
We got out coached and way out played. Next two games will tell the tale.
In the post game conference, Albin said that Rutledge had a âlower body injuryâ, and that he was partially recovered, but not well enough to practice last week. Hopefully he can practice this week, and play next week.
I can clearly see why after Spring camp, virtually all of the late recruits were linemen on both sides of the ball. To me, all the other positions donât concern me, but you canât win football games without some good blocking up front, and without a D-line that gets pressure on the QB, and keeps the opposing O-line off the linebackers. Charlotte lost the battle of the lines on both sides of the ball. On offense, the line couldnât open running lanes, and Harrell didnât have long to pass. On defense, the line got very little pressure, and the linebackers were always getting blocked. Combine the two, and the result was ugly.
I agree with a post above that the DBs looked good. No way you can have 5 DBs, though, and they all maintain perfect coverage for as long as Swann had to pass. He could just sit back there and wait for someone to get open.
Can the lines get fixed? That remains to be seen. No doubt the coaches will make some adjustments, and there will be more coaching this week. Remember this about all the late additions to the team: They didnât go through winter conditioning, and they didnât go through Spring camp. They have only had a brief time to learn Charlotte systems and get acclimated. Well, itâs trial by fire now. They better improve fast or the season will be over, and will have been ugly.
Now we know the starting point, and itâs not at all what I was hoping for. Letâs see how much they can improve week to week.
Since 2015 App State football has a 71.8% winning percentage. Since 2015 Charlotte football has a 32.9% winning percentage. So tradition has nothing to do with winning, just how you disperse your NIL, okay?
Problem is, would this AD be successful in football/basketball in fcs/d2 or even d3? Im not so sure. I think you should be able to compete with your conference peers. For some reason that hasnât been happening for a long time. Other random schools do it. We canât.
