2025 Charlotte 49er Football 🏈

With the addition of Hoffman today, the receiver corps now includes:

  1. Three proven pass catchers: McGowan (82-836 at BC), Gibson (47-580 at NWCC) and Mason (68-517 at Samford)
  2. Seven recruits that were highly rated as recruits: Spillman (TN), Olson (2-35), Hampton (W.Ky), White, Austin, Burris (2-64), and today’s addition, Jeremiah Hoffman
  3. Two others that had game appearances in 2024 for Charlotte: Hopkins IV (3-8), Lamb
  4. Three that are unknown: Eley, Hawkins IV, Hamilton
  5. Two RB who could also play some WR to get them on the field more: Rutledge, Gainey

It may not be a slam dunk position of strength, but there is some potential here. We’ll have to see who emerges at the top.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but with the addition of Hoffman, Albin has seriously cooked. We have to look at a bowl game as the absolute floor with this roster.

And we still have 7 scholarships to give

Hoping these green-eyed glasses are correct but I have heard similar remarks every year and we somehow have ways of destroying any hopes of being nothing but fair at best.

Yeah bowl predictions are too much at this point, especially with such a tough schedule.

I want to see both stability and improvement. I know we were 5-7 last year, but some of those 7 losses were ugly and not all of the Ws were pretty.

And I was really happy we got Hoffman. I hope I’m not too optimistic about his long term potential. I think he can have a solid career here if he puts in the work.

I count:
67 Existing players
7 from P4
6 from G5
7 from FCS
1 from D2
6 from Juco
5 from High School
Total 99 players

My guess is that the starters will come from about 60% existing players, 40% new players, with mostly new players on offense, but heavily weighted towards existing players on defense.

I have no expectation that this team will make a bowl, nor that they won’t. I just want to see them meld into a team during the Spring and summer, then then play hard every game, from start to finish, and get better each week. If they can do that, then let the chips fall where they may, and it will still be a successful season.

Who is “Olson”?

Best seasons were as 2021 RS freshman at UNC-CH (143 yds / 9 catches) and as 2023 RS junior at Middle Tennessee (450 yds / 43 catches). One TD each season.

6’3” 210lbs of man meat

White boy WR with that man meat ness is not getting open. Would defy logic and the smell test.

Tell that to Christian Mccaffrey. He gets open as a WR as a running back and heck he even throws TDs from time to time.

Nobody tries to cover him on the sidelines

Just a FWIW - I would not trust those Vivid seats at this time. No tickets have been assigned to my knowledge. Buyer beware.

Like Vivid, Stubhub listing section and row but not specific seat number:

CMC is 5’11” maybe. Not apples to apples. And RB normally covered by the LB I believe, not a DB. But why do the details matter. I’m sure we have the CMC equiv of a WR here.

No one said that any particular one of the WR will be a star. I said there were 15 to choose from, and from those, I’m hoping that 3 emerge who are very good, and another 3-6 emerge who are good and/or are role players. There are a lot of different skills that help to make a WR good, including, among other things, pure speed, shiftiness, route running precision, ability to catch the ball in traffic, and, of course, blocking ability. All are important, but no two of the receivers are going to have identical skill sets.

I have no idea what the skill set of Olson is. He clearly has height, which can be an advantage when lined up against a shorter DB. He appears to be fairly fast. How is his route running? Can he block? Can he make tough catches over the middle when he knows that he is going to get hit? If so, he may have a place, or perhaps not. The only other thing I know about him is that he was good enough to earn some playing time under Poggi, and had 2 receptions for 35 yards.

If I was going to guess who will emerge at the top, I’ll guess McGowan, Spillman, and Mason, with Gibson as my #4 pick. Probably, though, someone else will work his way into the mix by impressing the coaches during winter conditioning and Spring practice. That said, if they move Gainey or Rutledge to WR, one of them may start. Those types of guys, you want to find a way to get the ball in their hands.

I feel comfortable that, when all is said and done, WR will not be a weak spot. I would urge all 15, whether walkon, or scholarship, or transfer, to approach Winter Conditioning and Spring practice with the attitude that they want to do their absolute best, because, right now they have a blank slate, and any one of them has an opportunity to earn a place on the field.

Olson only played in 1.5 games last season. I remember him going by in Chapel Hill on crutches. He was a starter the first two games. I think he will be capable but hasn’t proven much here yet.

Any word on when the Spring game is?

Wonder if we have one. Was it Nebraska that canceled theirs because last year a number of players got cherry picked and paid elsewhere after spring game?

With all teams now having a roster limit of 105 instead of having ~120 players, that makes it likely that more and more teams will opt out of a conventional Spring game. Even with Charlotte under 100, I think they could have a conventional Spring game, but I suspect they will opt for more of a glorified scrimmage. How many people typically come to the Spring game? Is it free?

Note that there will most likely be players held out because they are recovering from an injury, but this is what I count for total players at each position.
WR 15, OL 17, TE 8, QB 4, RB 7
DE 8, DT/NT 7, LB 7, DB 21
K 2, P 1, LS 2
