2025 College Basketball Transfer Portal

I really dont understand what the point is in all this at this point. Honestly it s a waste of money.

No draft.

No salary cap.
.
It’s just buying championships with additional support from biased rights holder media and biased proprietary ranking systems.

I heard a clip of Jay Bilas on FNZ wearing his lawyer hat trying to say this years chalk Final Four being the result of the current environment is a single data point, then immediately pointing to another single data point, the 2023 Final Four, to refute it.

He is so full of shit. :red_apple:s to :tangerine:s. 2 years ago, things were much different (yes things have changed that rapidly):

  1. NIL hadn’t fully transitioned to everyone paying to play
  2. these moneyed programs hadnt hired GMs and expanded their payrolls to upper 7 figures.
  3. many of these programs hadn’t yet abandoned signing prep kids not named Cooper Flagg. That’s pretty much over now. Much surer bet to shop the all conference teams from your local mid major leagues.
  4. there was a glut of experienced players in the transfer Portal due to Covid. While the portal #s this year are huge, the total player pool across college basketball is down from 2 years ago as those Covid exceptions are now exhausted.

He knows all of this but he did his best lawyer work, and because he has a name and a platform, his excuses will hide the fact that his employer wants all of this - they want contraction. They want only the top programs, and everyone else “D2”.

Bilas also loves to argue that this was the only way to get players paid, but that is bullshit too. There are so many ways Revenue Sharing could have been pooled to institute a defacto salary cap across all of D1 basketball, or at a minimum, a tiered system across all of the conferences so that at least the mid majors could somewhat compete, albeit with one arm tied behind their backs. Nope. The top 2 leagues want ALL of the money. And ESPN wants the top 40 or so and F everyone else.

What we got this year is not only the new normal, it’s the baseline. It will likely only get worse as the gap between the haves and have nots expands. There were still a bunch of experienced players playing for mid majors in this year’s tournament. The #s of those will be fewer and fewer from now on.

Edit - forgot one of his other favorite talking points -“the portal swings both ways”… Sure Jay. How many mid majors are jumping to trade their proven all conference players for end of the bench busts from the big money programs? What a deal!

It’s all so disingenuous. Everytime I hear him talk or see him post, he is just polishing the shit sandwich that these leagues and their media partners are shoving down the throats of traditional college sports fans everywhere.

Advocate I’m getting the impression that you and Bilas don’t see eye to eye.

I think he got 250k from CofC last year plus a car.

Do you think he’s worth that? Not a facetious question. Seriously asking

Isn’t everything a “last straw” for you? You are all out of straws at this point
