Albin did confirm the 90K figure spent last year on the roster…good riddance Mike Hill!

That definitely explains why the first guys from the portal weren’t that great, and why the best guys they brought in were the ones they brought in late … once the portal was picked over and most teams had spent their money.

The change in Albin’s tone reminds me of the year Lutz finally got the roster reloaded (“we’re back” - believe that was the year we added Shamari Spears, amongst others). Anyway, Albin sounds reinvigorated, which makes me feel a lot better. I think we can be competitive in a decent # of our games this year. How well we do in those is up in the air, but it should be a much more competitive year overall even if the win total doesn’t go up dramatically.

That’s insane. Can’t compete at top level FCS with that little.
I may be wrong but I believe he misspoke and it was 900k. Again, I could very well be wrong here. Still, 900k isn’t very much either.
He was asked on Hwy49 podcast if he misspoke when he said 90K…he clarified that was the correct number.

It was 90k for the transfers in the first window if I understand correctly. That’s still abysmally low.

Dave is correct. The number was for the first transfer window last year. Albin said they held back a little bit of money because they figured they would lose some.more players, but either way, it was a pittance.
He told Hunter and I believe Wes and Walker too that the fundraising efforts this year were a literal lifeline. He said without it we wouldn’t be able to field a team. The fundraising did not put us into the top few programs in the league, but we did have a competitive pool of money and he is psyched about the players we were able to get in the portal.
His discussions about how much heavier, stronger, and faster the roster is this year are what have me psyched. He knows he finally has some athletes that can compete this year. I understand what he means by wanting to call last year “year zero” and this one as “year one”… Totally different outlook.

Good interview, we seem to remain at a disadvantage in this level of Conference in resources and play on the field.
Said defense had players we wanted to keep, so should be better this year building on a baseline. Offense total rebuild, lets hope we get lucky with that as we are due for some good luck. New QB sounds better than the ones we had, that would help.

So 90k on last year’s roster or this years?
The $90k group would have been Chaney, Loftis, Harrell, McGowan, Bootle, Gill, Spillman, Startz, Bowman, Garfield, Hampton, Baldwin, Bowers, Young, Liverpool, Willis, Curtain, Mullen, Mason, Shipman, Shirley, D. Davis, WIlcke, Gibson, Burgess, J. Johnson, Samples, and O. Davis, which is 28 players.
The group brought in later with money set aside would have been Miles, Ramil, Nicholas, Boyd, Green, Irving, Talib, Simpson, Cobb, Williams, Kaba, Brooks, Solomon, Fernandez, Smith, Schmitz, and Taylor, which is 17 players.
There were some good players in the first group, but clearly, the second group, on average, was much higher quality than the first. IDK if it was because Charlotte had more money later, or because other teams had run out of money.
