Since we are talking about freshman and the future, think about how rare it is for freshmen to really stand out. I know Henry did - he may have averaged 20 a game. Jarvis averaged in the upper teens in points and over 9 rebounds per game as a freshman. I remember Demarco and Jobey improving steadily each year. Mike Milling came in as a JUCO and lit it up. I think I remember Cornbread’s stats improved each year. Eddie improved each year.
I agree, if we are able to land one or two of the top guys we are going after right now, the future will quickly make us forget about the past few years.

Whats all this talk about the future? If you listen to some of the posters on here you’d think the program was folding. It is always refreshing when a brave soul decides to buck the trend of negativity and make an optimistic statement.
i agree that we have a bright future especially if our young guys develop. all we need to do is get a couple of scorers and land one or two of the big time recruits we are going after.

I completely agree. Unfortunately, this optimism is often mistaken for dilusion or side effect of green kool aid on here…
[QUOTE=moss2k;281809]holy sh*t, did I just read some optimism on here?

Equally shocked. The potential is certainly there.
Why all the talk of the future, isn’t there 17 games left on the schedule? I know looking forward gives hope, but the Srs on this team especially Lee deserve all hands on desk for the rest of this season.

Is it really dogging this team to look ahead a little? We are complimenting the skill of the newest recruits, which happens to be a lot. We only have two seniors as I recall, and no one would discredit Lee. If you look at the attendence and atmosphere at the games this season you will see that every one is on board/supportive for this team.
Oh yeah, that is one of the biggest topics of conversation around me at the games. What we will be like.
Dewhurst, Anjuan and Gaby all have a lot of potential and play smart. Harris and Gerrity have been well documented on this website. If Jones develops well, we have a starting lineup for the next three years. Who knows how good Javarris will be? The only piece of this team that I am going to be sad to see leave next year will be Coley. I wish we had him for four years (along with everyone else).

wow, the seniors include a JUCO transfer who never sees the floor then Lee. No one is taking away from this year, just looking ahead to greener pastures. Lee gets his due respect and will continue to from every Niner faithful, no one trying to take that away.
I guess my point is, are all fans discounting this teams ability to make a run through the A-10 and possibly eek out a NCAA bid or even a NIT invatation? Postseason is postseason especially when coming into this season hopes were moderate to low at best.
Lee has been one hell of a player for this team, 19ppg getting each teams best defender every night. He is the only player on this team averaging in double figures.

I don’t think you are getting it. We mean no disrespect to this team in this thread anywhere. This is about the current players that will remain here and a credit to their skill level and potential. Sort of like saying, “Wow, Hansborough is great this year, imagine next year as he grows and matures.” Is that saying anything bad about the current team or how he plays now? No! In college, unless they get injured, a lot of players tend to improve. This thread is titled and targeted to so many players because we are only losing two players. So, take it this way… As much as this team has surprised us in some of their wins and the chemistry they have shown, just imagine the damage we can potentially grow to over the next one, two even three years.

It would take a combined collapse by X, UD, URI, UMass, Duquesne, and St. Joe’s for us to make a run through the A-10. Yes, Fordham and GW are doing their part (must have been those contract extensions for Hobbs and Whittenburg!), but I just can’t see us finishing ahead of those half-dozen. A 7th place finish is possible, though, with our main competitors there being Saint Louis, Temple, and perhaps a resurgent Richmond.

yea Lee is at 19ppg, but outside of Lee we have been struggling on offense. Granted someone could step up, so far we have been a one trick pony. If Lee’s off we have trouble beating teams that would probably finish last in the A-10. There’s teams like Xavier, Duquesne, URI, and UMass that can easily put up 100, they’ve got 3-4 guys on the team that can score at will. With Xavier its more like 7.
The Rhody Rams and Muskies are two of the best chemistry teams in the A10. Fact is, we are young, in a very tough league. We all know that a postseason bid is possible, but the way this team has played on the road, it’s unlikely (unless its to the new tournament). I guess expectations are low, young team, nothing wrong looking to the future.

Sorry, I have been reading the 2008-2009 thread, so my post in this thread would be better served there. I know we all have the tendency to have the “look to next year” glasses on far too often and we miss a good season. The 2003-2004 season was great, but I remember folks saying just wait till Demon and Butter are gone and we will do such and such.
I know the attendance has been great in the early season, I hope the fans come out if the tide begins to turn.

Well, the distinct difference here is that no one is saying wait until Lee is gone. That’s because we will miss having a guaranteed shooter. In fact, the subject of missing Lee has popped in quite a few places. We like the visible potential that our newcomers have, but realize there is a hole at SG that Ian, Barnett and Bowden will have to fill. Maybe this will be good and finally force us to push the ball inside a little more.
I like An’juan and think he’ll put up Eddie Basden numbers sooner rather than later. Other than that, I’m not all that excited about the rest. Coley and Mack are solid Jucos, but will be gone after next year and Chucky Dew, Goonje and Harris will be nothing more than solid role players. I hate to be Mr. Negative, but next year will be ugly without a go-to scorer and none of our new guys (or recruits) show any sign of being remotely close to that. Maybe An’juan will be that guy down the road, but not until he developes an outside shot.
For a glimpse into the future, look at how we play when Leemire struggles…a little scary.
Our future without Leemire can mean a few things, but the ones that stands out the most to me are.
We will have less scoring power
Same time we will have less stupid contest shots being jack up.
So, if we can replace Lee with a shooting guard that plays solid defense, doesn’t gamble on the steal, doesn’t take contest stupid shots. While having everyone else up their scoring ability a little. I think our future looks bright.
However, we will really miss Lee’s great leadership, hopefully someone will step up and take over the role
