49ers Men's Soccer ⚽

Yes, Marshall MSOC is predominantly international. Vermont has a dozen. Niners 15. Nothing new here.

Once again, the point was not they were foreign, but that they had professional experience and were older guys. There was a loophole in the NCAA rules that allowed them eligiblilty and Marshall was one of the first to exploit that loophole.
Other schools could do the same, the loophole may closed, or Marshall may not be still doing what they did. Still makes their run to a Championship tainted.

clt says something is corrupt at marshal. why in the world would an international player sign on at a bad academic school in the rust belt?

My son was talking about a professional player just signing to a college. I forget which one. I might update this later.

Maybe to play for National Championships

Marshall is an R2 and projected R1 within 3-5 years with a higher APR score than the off shoot school of UNC… The Marshall soccer program had a .972 APR, with 6 scoring a perfect 1000.

Pedro Dolabella says HI by the way.

Does it bother you that lil Marshall who had 12 winning or break even seasons from 1979-2016 has passed Charlotte up in what would have to be their best sport. Does it make you mad that Marshall sent home both schools that Charlotte lost to in each of their College Cup years: 2020 Charlotte/UNC 1-1 (PK 4-1 UNC). Marshall 1 UNC 0 and 2024 Charlotte 1 NC State 2, NC State 0 Marshall 2.

Charlotte always the ugly fat brides maid, Never the bride !

I’m pulling for you guys personally. But I take offense to the fat brides maid comment. I had a lot of fun with fat brides back in the day.

Well, it’s not like they are going to Marshall for an education, it’s all about the soccer. Marshall has won a recent Natty so it’s probably at the top of the list for foreign players are looking at US schools. That’s doubly true if the school is known for recruiting lots of foreign players.

4ever, can you provide a link to info about the soccer loophole? I’m not finding anything in my search.

I know that Canadian hockey players with professional experience are going to be allowed to join NCAA teams under certain circumstances beginning next year.

Pretty sure we’ve had a men’s basketball player or two who had to sit out a number of games for participating in pro leagues in Europe.

clt looked at the marshal roster. players from tokyo, london, sao paulo, etc.

there is no way a player in these global cities would desire to play soccer at a school like marshal without something happening.

this is similar to uncp recruiting international cricket players.

Hey, as a past WCU dad, no badmouthing the Cats!

Thanks! That’s not ringing a bell for me so not sure what else was going on that I just don’t remember the Herd being under scrutiny.

Clarification from my son:

This guy signed with UNC Wilmington a couple of weeks ago:

Crown Legacy FC is the reserve team for Charlotte FC, and they do get paid (I don’t know how much).

I’m not sure if it matters anymore, but from what I understand from certain people who would know is that Marshall was doing this before it was all kosher, which explained why anyone would want to play college soccer in West freaking VA, not to mention how they were stacking their roster with pros.

For reference, Jonathon Nyandjo, from our 2023 team signed with Crown Legacy FC after he finished his senior season with us. Not before. And Riyon Tori was drafted in the MLS draft but was never a pro either, AFAIK.

We had multiple club players on the 2024 squad. No idea if any of them were pros. I wasn’t aware of any.

Have no idea why Marshall U and West Virginia U have become destinations for men’s soccer, whether US or international players. We know the former doesn’t really have any money, though coach Chris Grassie is compensated quite well at $400K per year. BTW, see that WVU had two players from Mecklenburg County this season - one a Hough grad and the other Myers Park.

Anyway, looks like those 2021allegations didn’t lead to any actions being taken against the Herd.

Looks like we’ll never know for sure. The only thing involving soccer and cheating I can find is the recent college admissions scandal.

Of course, when it comes to the NCAA, cheating is as old as the organization itself. Ironically, concerns about professionalization contributed to the regulatory body’s creation in 1906.

Nat’l Championship match 0-0 at half with Vermont having a slight edge in play, which means they wlll probably lose. Marshall has one yellow card and deserved another.

This is a good game. Vermont just equalized. Under 10 left.
