Collegehoopsupdate.com: 2008-09 College Hoops Commitments

Just updated the list to reflect PG Kwamain Mitchell’s verbal to Saint Louis. Majerus is getting it done!

we’ll get in on the fun soon…

I think Lutz’s contract situation may play a big factor in recruiting for 08-09. What kid would want to committ here if there is a possibility they could have a new coach after 1 year in the program?

We have always struggled getting recruits to commit this early. We usually start to pick up when the fall semester starts, and going on into September. I don’t think Bobby’s contract is playing that much into it. It just seems to be the norm for us.

Just updated to reflect the Brian Walsh verbal to Xavier. That wraps up 2008-09 recruiting for the Musketeers barring any transfers, etc.

Walsh also had offers from Duquesne, Maryland, Memphis, Penn State, Pitt, St. Joe’s, and West Virginia. Apparently came down to X and the Terps before picking the A-10 over the ACC.

Updated to reflect another commit for the Billikens – 6-4 SG Femi John of McCluer North HS in Florissant, MO (St. Louis-metro area). McCluer North is the 2007 Missouri State Class 5A (largest classification) boys basketball champions.

I think Bobby’s contract has an impact, but I also am curious what percentage of these kids end up keeping their commitment and being as good as expected. With the way life tends to go around here, well, one word… “Huggins”.

We always seem to be late in the game…

Majerus strikes again! This time it’s 6-8/220 PF Brian Conklin out of Eugene, OR. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Billiken blog, he averaged 19.6 ppg, 11.3 rpg and 4 apg for a 28-0 team that won the state 5A title (2nd largest H.S. division in Oregon). For his efforts, Conklin was named the Class 5A POY. Oregon State had offered and Scout.com reported interest from Gonzaga and Oregon, among others.

Here’s a name for the Charlotte coaches: Willie Warren, 2008.

He’s a Texas native who plays at Oak Hill in VA. He liked Coach Gillespe because of his Texas roots and subsequently signed with Kentucky. But he just backed out of the commitment because he wants to play for a school where he won’t have to worry about playing time.

Hmmm…we have a Texas-based recruiter and a Virginia-based recruiter. We need a shooting guard to replace Leemire and Warren is one of the best. He sucks at defense and we’re used to that. He wants playing time and he can have all the playing time he needs right here.

EDIT: Keep your eye on his left arm.

What he did to that guy will cost you $20 at the least downtown.

The dunk or the technical foul that came after it?

Hell, I’m wondering what he got the technical for? He treated that guy like a squirrel.

I believe he got the Technical for taunting it’s the only thing I can see him getting it for.

Did this thread get “highjacked” because Lutz has yet to get a verbal for 08-09? Just curious…

haha Im LOVING the hoopscoop logic.

Okay, I’m going to try to get this back on topic.

Just added 6-9 C/F Vernon Goodridge to the list. He transferred from Mississippi State to La Salle and will be eligible in 08-09 after sitting out the upcoming season.

More good pub for the A-10’s 08-09 recruiting class. From the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reporting on Xavier recruit Kenny Frease at the LeBron James Skills Academy:

Observation:

Between St. Edward’s 6-7 (and Michigan State recruit) Delvon Roe, Massillon Perry’s 6-11 Kenny Frease and Ohio State recruit Anthony Crater, a 5-11 point guard, it would seem Xavier, which landed Frease, landed the best recruit of the three.

He took up plenty of space on the court, scored deftly around the rim and rebounded solidly.
