A-10 commitments for 2008-09

Updated to reflect verbal by SG DeAndre Kane to Duquesne. Kane plays for Pittsburgh Schenley H.S., which won the Pennsylvania PIAA Class AAAA championship in 2007. He was high scorer in the championship game (21 points) on a team that included Big East recruits DeJuan Blair (Pitt) and D.J. Kennedy (St. John’s). According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Kane also was being recruited by Pitt, Illinois, Penn State, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Wyoming and Toledo.

Wonder if I will ever get the opportunity to put Charlotte on this list. Hmmm…

Are we close to getting a commitment from anyone? I am getting tired and worried when you read the board or the newspaper about everyone else getting a commitment or two.

its not about getting early committments, its about getting good committments. this time of year is not when i worry about getting these guys.

I am a little concerned that 11 of 14 A-10 schools have some sort of commitment for 2008-09, be it frosh and/or transfers, and that Charlotte is one of the 3 that have no one as of yet (the others being GW and Temple).

Xavier has finished its recruiting and has already started on 2009-10, most notably offering 6-8/225 PF Stephan Van Treese of Indianapolis (#41 on Rivals 2009 Top 75). Saint Louis has one more schollie to offer for 08-09 and word is Majerus - like Miller at X - is already after players for 09-10.

God, that’s embarrassing. I know X. is good, but come on… where the hell are we?

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? I’m starting to get fumed about this whole situation.

I know Bobby’s contract situation probably has a lot to do with it. Players don’t want to go somewhere there will be a coaching shakeup and volatility. But, is Bobby and company even trying half-assed? Not one player giving a verbal? Our best player is gone next year, and we don’t have ANYONE yet…

Or, is this just what happens when you move to the A-10 and are located in North Carolina?

Look at the crappy season Wake had last year… last in the ACC, right?, and I just read about how they’re going to have a top recruiting classes in the country… I know the history is different, but couldn’t we at least hit something… anything?

I know that we usually are a little late getting commintments, but players are giving commitments earlier than they were a few years ago. I think we should expect something by the end of July or we are going to be playing from behind again. This will lead us to our favorite JUCO players to fill spots on the team. I have not even heard that we are close on any players currently. Camps are just about over and I think coaches will go into another dead period before long. I thought some of the coaches that were hired last year were great recruiters!

We already are behind…

Jucos, here we come…

I forgot to mention that Dayton is already working on 09-10 as well, having offered local product 6-9/240 PF Matt Kavanaugh. The Flyers might have the inside track since his father is a UD grad and a longtime UD hoops season ticket holder, though the younger K has been checking out the Big East with an unofficial visit to Pitt and attending a camp for elite players at West Virginia (with good ol’ Bobby Huggins, no less!).

Coach Everhart at Duquesne is on the trail to finish recruiting on 08-09. Though the Dukes have only one more scholarship available, he’s looking for fill two more slots if necessary. Talk is that if Shawn James picks up where he left off 2 years ago when he tranferred from Northeastern, he’ll be headed to the NBA after this coming season.

I am now very concerned.

I don’t even think we are anyones leader right now. Look at Rivals 150, a lot of names are falling off the list. Where are the people who say Bobby is such a great recruiter at now? Also we got our “ace” back from Maryland, and we didn’t lose a single assistant coach this summer, also we have been in the a10 for going on 3 years so no more “we have to adapt”. Someone strike up the excuse mill, its running low.

Unfortunately ATL is right, JUCO here we come! can’t wait for guys next year that we would have been concerned about as freshman in 06, they jump out of the gym or something against juco competition and then the same flag waivers come boasting of our “top recruiting classes”

Sounds like Duquesne got a good one in DeAndre Kane. Apparently he leaves it all on the court and then some!

"Duquesne is a good school, and their basketball program is ready to explode onto the scene," Deandre Kane said Thursday night from a room at Mercy Hospital, where he was being treated for dehydration following a spectacular showing with the Pittsburgh Team Adidas summer league team at a tournament in Akron, Ohio.

Kane averaged 30 points and won MVP honors of the tournament, where he played six games in two days.

“I’m just going to go there and try to help them win,” Kane said of Everhart’s Dukes, whose recruiting class this season is among the highest-rated in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Kane, who also was attracting attention from Pitt, Penn State, Illinois, Wisconsin, Toledo, Wyoming and Virginia Tech, was recruited by Everhart as a shooting guard, but he also has shown the ability to play point guard.

BTW, also updated the list to reflect Travon Wilcher’s reclassification from 07-08 to 08-09 for UMass. As such, Coach Ford has just one more scholarship to fill for the Minutemen for the 2008-09 class. Apparently it could go to the younger brother of Stephane Lasme – 6-7 PF Romaric Lasme.

Well, hope that’s not going to happen, but just in case…

BTW, on that list are a couple of names seen on this board before – Mike Jones and Tyronne McNeal.

Last year was, sadly, a typical recruiting year. ‘Typical’ meaning running around with your arms waving shouting “Woo! Woo!” in a frantic mission to find replacements for De’Angelo Alexander, EJ Drayton, Antwon Coleman, Jerrell Jamison, Courtney Williams, David Booker, Carlos Williams, Travis Gordon, Moe, Larry, and Curly.

Now, it’s an ‘atypical’ year and that’s hard to get used to. Two players are known to be leaving: Goldwire and Phaler. One scholarship will be off-limits for Harris to earn. There also seems to be a newish team policy of holding the final schollie for an Alexander, Gerrity, or Plavich-type of transfer (or like a Phil Jones, who entered the mix late).

That leaves only one verbal commitment between now and the end of the year. The coaches might seek a 2nd verbal as insurance but I’m really only expecting one.

Personally, I’d rather be one of the teams that has the '08 recruiting all wrapped up at this point. Seems like 5 or so good players verbally commit somewhere else every day. But the good news is that the Charlotte targets are still available. I’ve been following the recruiting efforts of the local NC colleges, hoping that they get verbals from distant out-of-state kids that Charlotte is not chasing. So far so good, as programs like Wake Forest are already done.

It’s a bit of a reach to say that Charlotte is in bad shape or that there’s reason to panic. You can panic and start mentioning jucos when the Charlotte HS targets drop out of the picture. They’re still there.

Survivor, thanks! Guess I’ve gotten used to bringing in so many players over the past couple of seasons that I didn’t do my “homework” on how many scholarships would be available after 07-08. Since it looks like just 1-2 will be available, that makes a big difference. Definitely rules out JUCOs, I would think.

possibly 3 scholarships. assuming a player doesn’t take his final year of eligibility. lewis is due to graduate this year.

I think that Harris is a wait and see as we have seen what JUCO PG have done in the past. I will be really surprise if he lives up to the promise. Wake is just about complete for the year with one of the op-5 recruiting classes in the natioal. Hopefully, that puts us in better shape with Gabriel and the kid from Starmount as all of the commitments for Wake are inside players. I still would hope we would get at least two verbals in the near future, or I think we will be back to JUCO’s again. I have not seen anywhere that we are leading for a player.

If we got BIG VIC I would be very content for now…

With Wake Forest out of the picture, it’s hard to tell which way he might be leaning.

It is going to be very difficult for Booby to recruit effectively without a contract extention. No big time or semi bigtime recruit is going to commit to a coach and staff with only 2 years left on their deal.

I hope Judy will do the smart thing and give Bobby and extension with a small buyout (similar to what UNC did for Bunting the year before they fired him and allowed hime to go out and sign a top 20 class).

If this doesn’t happen we are screwed.
With Wake Forest out of the picture, it’s hard to tell which way he might be leaning.
Certainly that can only help our case, but their are several ACC schools still in the picture, he could end up being a fall back recruit for UNC.

Well, Niner JUCO PGs fall into a couple of categories:

 1. Sean Colson

 2. Carlos Williams

The first one is a good thing. The second not so much.
