I wouldn’t call the CAA crappy. The A-10 is definitely a step up most seasons, but the CAA is one of the better mid major conferences.
I’m just teasin’ our ODU visitor. The CAA is a good football conference.
Strange move indeed considering that the A10 prides itself on having a strong member base and tradition in Philadelphia.
Could it be the start of some member institution movement within the conference? Possibly dropping Fordham, Duquesne, and St.Bonaventure for Old Dominion, VCU, and Hofstra.
The A10 had its football days and they let them slip away. The only way they ever get football back is if the CAA and A10 merge into a super-conference and there would be a lot of the better basketball schools jumping ship if they did.
It is very curious though why a conference with 14 teams would choose to relocate their conference HQ to a point south of 93% of its membership.

Unless the A10 changes its stance on football, I doubt we see ODU or Hofstra coming aboard. I just can’t see the CAA welcoming them back FFO if they leave for all other sports.
Now, if the A10 begins to sponsor football again… the entire equation changes.

You’re thinking merge. I’m thinking split.
The CAA has 12 football teams not including Old Dominion & Georgia State. It doesn’t make any sense to be that big when you only have a limited amount of games on your conference slate per season.
Now let’s see … which conference most recently had experience running football? Hmm…
Give the North Division to the A10 and give the South Division to the CAA. With Charlotte, ODU, Georgia State, and one more team you can have two 8-team conferences.

If that were the case, why would the A10 move its HQ south of the entire conference?

FCS football is a little different than FBS. In FCS having MORE teams in your conference makes you more attractive for regional TV and radio packages.

Still seems stupid to me to have that many teams in your conference. If you miss a home game against a conference rival during your freshman year, you would have to wait until after graduation to see that same team return to your campus.

Considering that NONE of the current A10 teams WOULD bring football to the CAA who already doesn’t play there, not sure that’s a big issue football wise. Basketball wise, even if you had 20 teams you still could play every team in a 19 game schedule or divide into divisions and play half the teams from the other division every other year. Either way the CAA will have just as many football teams as it will in the current format, 15 (including us).
