Alan Barnwell - RB - Verbal Commit

RB from Cummings high school.

Apparently verbaled to Charlotte last week.

From the story in IDā€™s link:

Barnwell said he wonā€™t shy away from taking official visits to other schools should a program express particular interest in him. He made an unofficial visit to Charlotteā€™s campus during the summer.

So is he commited or not? That doesnā€™t read as being very solid.

Hell yes with the pre 5 am update. This guy is already on film. Heā€™s right, he can use the time to bulk up. Even at his weight, he has nice blocks, hits and broken tackles in the highlight. Sub 4.4 40? Mullen can coach that up. Man I canā€™t wait for football.

Alan Barnwell - #14 - RB/LB - Cummings High School - Class of 2012

He gave a verbal commitment last week to play at Charlotte, which fields its first team in 2013.

Get ready to see this over and over! Itā€™s finally here!

Basically just like any other verbal. Maybe commit, maybe not.

I find it odd that he verballed this early for 2012. Especially if heā€™s open about jumping to a bigger program if they come knocking.

Do many players play both ways (offense/defense) in FCS?

finished with over 4 yards a carry and a score last night

Is this one of the first football commits?

Pretty sure itā€™s THE first commitment.

Congrats Alan. We look forward to you helping build this Charlotte program. Heā€™s a small guy, but thatā€™s ok.

So where is Cummings High? Close enough for a Niner Nation contingent to get out and see him play?

I believe Cummings is in or near Burlington.

Yes. Itā€™s in Burlington. Theyā€™re back to being a good program again the last couple of seasons after being down for few years. They have won 5 state titles in 3-A and 2-A since 1988. Cummings has produced several notable D1 players over the years including Chuckie Brown, Donnie Davis, and Dwight Jones.

Hereā€™s their schedule for this year (.pdf alert):

Cummings is currently 10th in 2-A according to the Massey Power Ratings.

Cummings has had tons of talent come through that program from Chucky Burnette (UNC), Donnie Davis (Georgia Tech), Maurice Mebane (NC Penitentiary, but held the national record for receptions when he graduated), Ernest Tinnin (ECU), Drew Williamson (committed to UNC, but then played basketball at Old Dominion). And then recently, Brandon Tate (UNC, NE Patriots) and Dwight Jones (UNC, TBD in the NFL).

They are always loaded with talented skill players. Barnwell will be added to this list above when he finishes an outstanding college career. Heā€™s got some wheels on him.

I hate Cummings just about more than any high school. They finally beat my high school (EA) this year after us beating them 4 years in a row.

Disclaimer - If any of you make the trip to East Burlington to watch Barnwell and the Cummings Cavs, make sure you pack some heat for protection.

Best verbal Ive seen thus far. Cummings has turned out some athletes thats for sure. Hopefully this guy brings his skills to U of C

Stats so far: 159 carries 1032 yard 17 touchdowns 7 games

Cummings is the #1 seed in the MidEast Regional of the 2AA bracket. They will be playing at home against #8 St. Pauls. Cummings will play at home for at least the first three rounds so long as they keep winning. Cummings finished the regular season ranked #4 in the 2A AP poll. They are a 28-point favorite over St. Pauls according to the Massey Ratings.

Cummings rolls in their first two playoff games, winning last night 35-8. Could not find a story on the game to see Barnwellā€™s stats, though he did have one nice TD run in the WFMY highlights.

Next up for Cummings is a re-match with archrival Reidsville, whom Cummings beat 21-20 in OT on September 30 when they thwarted Reidsvilleā€™s attempt to go for two and the win.
