Albin's Coaching Staff

Yes you are right.

I believe more assistants will move to Charlotte than CarlP does because of the salary. Ones who stay will get promotions to things like AHC or coordinators.

There will also be third parties who wish to hire these guys.

You may be right, but when all is done, I believe both Ohio and Charlotte will have good coaching staffs. Good luck to both teams.

Too bad we couldnā€™t show them the same respect on their board. I believe that poster has to be either an App or EZU fan. I donā€™t believe he is one of ours. If he is then I certainly disown him.

Itā€™s the internetā€¦good luck.

Weā€™re used to Marshall fans. Itā€™s all chill.

Per a post on Bobcatattack, the purported Charlotte fan who tried to create ill will towards Charlotte
ā€œā€¦registered with an email that, upon a search, ties it in with another AAC program.ā€

There are definitely no hard feelings.

Itā€™s pretty remarkable the amount of haters our program has managed to gain despite us being maybe the worst program in FBS since our inception lol

Thanks for letting us know. I was the dude calling him out. I knew he wasnā€™t legit. Not a very smart fraud to use an email like that.

Itā€™s at least flattering he cares enough about us to invest that much time and energy.

Good job calling him out. You nailed it. His IP was ā€œnear Charlotteā€, so Eastern Carolina would be a logical guess.

Getting back to Albinā€™s offensive strategies:

  1. Doe he run the option? Yes, yes, he does. That may be why Purdie went into the portal. But, how often does he run it? The answer is that it depends on the skill set of the QB. In 2022 and 2023, the QB was Kurtis Rourke, now at Indiana, who was an outstanding passer, but not a great runner, so they ran the option sparingly, perhaps 2-3 times a game. In 2024, the QB was Navarro, who was a very good option QB, but not nearly as good of a passer. Thus, in 2024 they ran a lot of option. He gained nearly 1000 yards rushing on the year, while Kurtis had only about 200.
  2. Do WR have to block? Thatā€™s a must. WR blocking is the difference between a 10 yard run and one that goes the distance.
  3. Does he throw the ball, too? Absolutely, but again, it depends on the skill set of his players. In 2022, with a passing QB, they threw the ball 464 times for about 3900 yards. In 2024, with a running QB, thry threw the ball 317 times for 2440 yards.
  4. Does the QB ever line up behind center? Not that I can recall. Heā€™s always in a pistol set.
  5. Is TE an important position? Yes, for sure. The will vary from 5 wideout sets to 2 TE sets, and Iā€™ve even seen 3 TEs, with one lined up in the backfield. A great blocking TE is a huge asset in the running game, but they are expected to catch passes in traffic, too.
  6. Do they run a hurry up offense? No, except for the 2 minute drill. Mostly they run a slow, methodical offense that take a long time to snap the ball. During that, the QB will often audible to other plays. If you look at the stats of the championship game, they drove Miami crazy with ball possession. On the second drive of the game, they ran 18 plays, using over 10 minutes of clock. That game was exceptional in terms of ball control, but they always try to control the clock.

Great analysis/intel, and thanks for sharing! Regarding ā€œstrategizing around player talentsā€, he said as much in a recent The Charlotte Post article we were discussing. This backs that up with a lot of great details. It seems like such an invaluable skill, I went as far as to suggest it would make for a great advertisement campaign to hype up the new coach.

It will be great to see what he puts together.

How may players are still on the Charlotte roster? At Ohio last year, they lost a ton of starters, and a ton of backups to the portal. Between Freshmen, JUCO players, and portal transfers, he had to add over 50 players. Albin had some good players that had previously been backups, and blended those guys in with the transfers to make a team. He looked everywhere for what he needed.
From P4 backups: #1 NT, 1st team All-MAC RB, 2 #2 WR, and a sixth man for the defensive backfield
From G5 xfers: a Long snapper and a 2d team All-MAC Jack
From FCS: 1st team All-MAC WR, 3rd team All-MAC SS, #1 WLB, #2 Jack, #2 TE
From JUCO: #2 WR, #2 QB, #3 NT, #3 DE
From Divison II: #1 OL that started at multiple positions, #2 LG, #2 DT
True Freshmen: Backup MLB, backup FC, #3 RB, #3 WR

Thatā€™s 22 new people who played regularly, including 4 all-MAC players. If you figure that about 50 people played regularly, the team was about 40% new players, 60% returning players. It took them until about 2/3 of the way through the season, but they blended into a team.

I know that you lost some players to the portal, but how many starters remain? How many backups? Iā€™m guessing that your situation for 2025 is similar what Ohio faced a year ago? The one thing you donā€™t have, the thing that may take awhile, is a culture of winning. That will come in time, hopefully quickly.

If you have any questions, I can try to answer them, but for now, Iā€™m done.

Hereā€™s a video about the rise of Ohio under Solich/Albin. Perhaps they will make a video about the rise of Charlotte before long:

A series of App State fans went on an emailing campaign to our chancellor to retain our 27 year athletic director that did not value football and basketball. We got haters.

Good old App State fans.

They were dragging us on their site during the coaching search then they shifted to disbelief that we were able to land a better coach (on paper) than them.

I would agree that our hire was empirically better than who they got.

Donā€™t think Albin means anything much by the ā€œAppyā€ comment other than perhaps a slight dig at an in-state rival. After all, he spent the past 20 years working and living in Appalachia.

Ohio Defensive Coordinator John Hauser will stay in Athens.

Albinā€™s staff is going to be very interesting. Weā€™ll see if the head man or the coordinators drove the bus in Ohio.
