Another Mark Packer thread

I hadn’t seen this posted anywhere else, so I thought I’d share. If it’s already been brought up - my bad.

I quit listening to this show a while back and I tell everyone that says they listen to it how much of a no-talent hack Packer is but there are some guys I work with that listen to it on their rides home and I heard a story from them this morning. I was glad to hear it and I thought those who dislike Packer would like it as well;

Packer was on the radio yesterday talking his normal smack about us having 2,000 tickets left and how he was calling Niner fans & students out (and even the city - from my understanding) about how there were still so many tickets available. A 49er fan called in and asked Packer if he was going. Packer then responded no and started about why did he need to go - just because he is involved in sports doesn’t mean he has to go to everything. Then the fan made a comment towards him asking why is he calling others out saying “there’s no reason you shouldn’t go to a 49ers game” and then not go himself. Also, from my understanding, the fan then hinted that all the stuff they spew about the Niners hurts the chances of casual fans going to the game. At that point, I think they cut the caller off but 3 different guys at work all mentioned it to me and all said they agreed with the caller and thought he made good points. They all sided with the fan and thought that Packer was being two-faced about the whole thing. One also said that he didn’t think much about our program (because of Packers show) but after I got him out to the DePaul game he thinks Packer is a complete idiot when it comes to his insults towards the Niners.

I just thought it was a good story.

GO NINERS, BEAT THE TIGERS!!!

The reason for him not attending might be because no one is willing to offer him choice seats. For good reason I am sure. He won’t buy upper deck tix.

Also, I think for him to call out the community for not buying tickets is a good thing. He is in fact trying to sway the casual fan to attend. Nothing wrong with that.

Good point, but Packer would never be sincere when discussing the 49ers. But wait and see, in 2 weeks, he'll be on that bandwagon!

clt thinks he won’t attend b/c either no one will care he is there, or will recognize him and throw feces in his ears.

Packer said he had a press pass to go whenever he wants yesterday, which means he he has higher priority events. I think what the caller was trying to do is say that if Packer is a sport expert of the “Southern Fried” area, then it seems he would have been to a game this year to see this ranked team. Packer’s sidekick JD(?) was really disturbed by the caller calling “them” out by saying its not their job to go to Halton Arena. It was definitley a weird exchange but the Niner fan represented himself very well. Dont get me started on Marty’s never ending thoughts on Lutz leaving because of fan support.

I dont think Packer is there to help our marketing, but it seems like if he is a big sports fan like he portrays on the radio how could you not check out the hype at Halton Arena.

I seldom see Packer at anything. Doesn’t mean he can’t do his job effectively, though. I have to admit I was a bigger sports fan and looked more forward to actually attending events before I got this job, especially if I’m going on a press pass. It’s different, because you’re there working. Good seats, though.

Trees will tap dance, elephants will ride in the Indianapolis 500, and Orson Welles will skip breakfast, lunch and dinner before Mark Packer sincerely supports the Charlotte 49ers athletic department.

... because that's not his job, either.

He helped you out, he told fans they should go see this team because it’s good, and you’re busting him because he’d rather spend time with his family or whatever?

It’s the old "Do as I say … " thing. Take him for what he’s worth.

I would but I have better things to spend a dime on.

Persinger. You are such a Packer apologist. When are you scheduled to co-host with Packer anyway? Good luck, jackass.

I take him 100% for what he's worth.

He’s an AM radio personality that someone appears to listens to. That someone is not me.

I replied only because there was an inference that he could, possibly get on the 49ers bandwagon.

Take my 2 cent opinion for what its worth, but a newspaper Sports Editor is far more important than some person on AM radio.

I try to avoid people who listen to his show…but I have listened and people are influenced by his opinions on sports.

give Persinger a break...he calls it like he sees it and keeps coming back for more abuse on this board......

Lighten up a bit Franchise... At least show a little bit of respect for Mike. He is the only in the Charlotte media who is willing to come here and actually take part in our community. We may not like what he says sometimes and I'm sure he doesn't like what we say sometiems as well. However, he sticks around and at least listens to what we have to say here. He isn't the one spewing backhanded compliments about 49er basketball on radio stations across the carolinas...

Totally agree. Props to MP

I’m not apologizing for him. And he is, granted, different from me because he works for the station that broadcasts your games, so you could infer from that that he gets money from the university and thus should do things differently.
We don’t. I have been offered tickets to your games – the good ones, below the track – and won’t take them because of the ethical issues. People think I get free tickets to everything, blah, blah, but I don’t and couldn’t if I wanted to. People have learned over 16 years not to offer me anything, because I won’t take it.
If I find out anyone – you guys, the Bobcats, anyone – is doing something wrong, I don’t want anything to stand in the way of us writing about it. No one can say, "but you took X, so you shouldn’t."
If explaining what I see as our role is wrong, sorry. Obviously my message hasn’t gotten through.
And if namecalling is your game, just start a new thread and put it all in there and I won’t read it. I’m trying to have a civil discussion.

I’m pretty sure Coach Lutz and the team could care less what Mark Packer says or dosn’t say about our program on weekday afternoons, so for that reason, as a fan…neither do I. One day perhaps we will have our own radio program (along with Lutz live) where Niner fans can discuss opinions with members of the media that actually do follow the team and can voice an intelligent opinion about the Niners. But until then…this awesome website does a superb job as an outlet.

Now let’s take care of Memphis…whose bringing the stuffed tiger?

Of course it isn’t his job to attend. It isn’t the “job” of people he is calling out either. I think the caller has a point though… he can’t really talk bad about other people in the the city for not supporting the team when he probably hasn’t been to a game in 5+ years. Yes, I know you think he is “helping us out” but 49er fans know better… I didn’t hear it, but I he was probably taking a shot at us for not being able to sell out games… I seriously doubt his comments were meant to “help us out.” He probably doesn’t come because he would fear for his safety in Halton arena after the way he has talked about us for the past few years.

BTW, I watched some of the Tarhole/NCSU game last night… Billy Packer has to be the most annoying announcer ever. I can stand Dicky V. longer than Fudge Sr.

Lighten up a bit Franchise... At least show a little bit of respect for Mike.

I don’t know why we should show respect to a guy that shows us so little. Did everyone already forget the week before the Cincinnati game and what a jackass Persinger was being?

You guys cannot admit we need Packer, more than he needs us.

He has the audience to get fans out to the game to see what we are. We’re not big enough media outlet, a messageboard and UNC Charlotte Marketing, to get fans out there to the games. Listen to yourselves, harassing everyone that gives a little piece your way and all you can do is bitch a little more.

sorry…I had to get that out…

Agreed, 49erpi. Mike was a jerk on the board then, but we should all just be happy that he frequents our board.
