I am trying to get stuff done in order to attend. Coach Aston is speaking at the coaches’ clinic today, a nice honor for her.

i went to see k.j. tonight in the east west all star game in greensboro. here is my evaluation. k.j. looked great. he lead all scorers with 19 points. he had several rebounds, probably at least 12 and probably four or five blocks. you must first understand that the west team which k.j. was on was far superior so that took pressure off him but he appears to be physically strong, an excellent rebounder, and a very good shot blocker. he goes for rebounds and attacks the boards after missed shots which is something that our team has trouble doing sometimes. he had two or three dunks, although he missed one. he is a very good defender on both the perimeter and on the inside. he probably could have been called for a few fouls that the refs didnt call but he also got fouled on two shots that the refs let go so it evened out. he definitly is an intelligent player and knows where to be on the court at all times and definitly hustles. the one thing he definitly needs to work on is his touch on the inside and i would have liked to see him take some jumpers but he wasent getting fed the ball enough. it is still hard to evaluate him because he was bigger than the guys he was going against but he appears to be physically ready to play division one basketball. he is a little undersized at 6’7" for power forward but he does have long arms and is a good athlete so i dont think it will be that big of a deal. this game was pretty one sided in the west’s favor. other players of interest in this game were wakefield ellison who is going to ecu. this guy is a steal for ecu. good size and an excellent three point shooter. keith randelmen who is going to unc-wilmington. very athletic and had some highlight reel plays but needs work on ball handling. c.j. harris who is going to wake forest. very good ball handler, quick and can shoot. the mvp for the game was michael grace who is going to yale. this kid, although undersized, was really good. very quick, very good passer and an excellent shooter. i was also impressed with kyle gaillard who is going to william and mary. he had a monster jam, and is a very good ballhandler. jaron lane, who is going to unc asheville, also played in the game. he had a decent number of points but he was playing for the east so nothing really stood out. a game like this really shows you the difference between a kid going to a school like presbyterian and a kid going to wake forest or charlotte.
Thanks for the write up. Wish I could have seen KJ, sounded like he did well…
If he can come in and play D, rebound, and hustle, thats all we need him for this year. I think we’ll have scorers on the inside, hopefully he can develop that aspect of his game as time goes on…
I had him for 9-13 FG’s, 1-2 FT’s, 7 Rbs, 3 steals, 2 Fouls, and 10 Blocks. He seems to have very good timing for blocking shots and plays pretty good interior defence. He did a good job of sealing off his defender for a lob pass and easy basket. He had several nice catch and shoot interior shots. While he is 6’7", he has long muscular arms and seems strong enough of D1 basketball. I could see him getting 10 or more minutes as a freshman and developing into a very good 4 year player. Hats off the Coach Lutz and staff for landing a very good one.

Direct quote of my reaction: "Oh my god... we've got him on our team??":wow: Fricken sweet!
Awesome stats too! 10 blocks?! I’d comment on the stats more, but they speak for their self. Can’t wait to see him in Niner green!! :49ers:

Says he had 19 pts 11 rebs and 5 blocks…
Also, some good quotes from the West’s coaches on KJ:
“K.J. never took a minute off this week, but no surprise there — he’s a product of Mike Gurley, and Mike’s kids will go hard,” West said. “K.J. was a joy to be around. He tries hard to do what you ask him to do, and he’s got enough talent to go out and get it done.”
“I loved having K.J. on my side,” McKenzie said. “K.J. is a workhorse. He ran the floor every possession. He was gonna play as hard as he could until he passed out.”

congrats to West Rowan All Star cheerleader Mary Allison Horton for making it!!!
Should we start a thread for her? We recruiting her? Anyone know who’s in the lead for this prospect? Anyone have her Scouts Rank? Come to Charlotte Mary!!!

Great article. This is all stuff you love to hear!!!
I guess I’ll have to wait till Nov to see how he plays downlow. What’s with all the comments about his 6’7 height not being a true power forward?? Coley was 6’7 and he played center for us, plus Spears is 6’6 and everyone has him pinned as our best power forward next year. Confused about all the questions about the height for Sherrill
other players of interest in this game were wakefield ellison who is going to ecu. this guy is a steal for ecu. good size and an excellent three point shooter.
Hey niner55, currious how you’d rate his ball handling & passing at this stage, & if he drove to the basket any? Also you seemed to know a lot about our team when we chatted before, you think he is ready to play some major minutes at shooting guard or even to compete for the position at the college level?
We have a couple returners that played last year, but SG is our most wide open position right now & he’s a little bigger at 6-6…ish than the other 2. His stiffest competiton is Jontae Sherrod who you may have even seen a couple years ago in the same all star game, experienced but much smaller at 6-2. Chris Turner’s 6-5 & more of a slasher but didn’t live up to the hype he came with last year.
BTW sounds like you guys got a good one in Sherrill. He was supposed to visit ECU the same weekend as Ellison, but commited a few day prior to you guys. Would have loved to have had him to. Looks like he has about a 7 foot wing span.
Someone want to post these to the Sherrill thread so they’re seen and not lost?
Very good to hear. He sounds like the rebounding machine we need and I’m sure he’ll improve his touch. Plays hard, pounds the glass with long arms and athletic. Has a lot to work with.

he was an above average ballhandler and seems to have the ability to drive to the basket. he definitly can play major minutes. he is an awesome shooter and has very good size for a shooting guard at 6’5". i could see him starting almost immediately, especially if you dont have a lot of depth at shooting guard. he will at least give you some instant offense and a good defensive stopper.
Great article. This is all stuff you love to hear!!!!
Good to see such quality coverage on a local team by a local newspaper. With KJ & Spears both on the court for us the next two years on-line readership of the Salisbury Post might go up.
