AP preseason top 25

Duke is overrated because they are Duke.
Boy I can't hardly remember the last time I heard that one..oh yea, last year.
We should be higher than NCSU and maybe Duke.
Exactly what has your team done to warrant being ranked higher in the preseason? Certainly you could end up being better, but IMO Charlotte has not accomplished enough nationally to deserve a higher ranking.

Duke starts 5 McD’s all americans. We’ve never had one…ever. That’s what we’re up against. Lutz gets more out of his teams than anyone in the country! We’d bring down the house in Raleigh. Wouldn’t even be close.

We would be a 8 pt dog at State and probably a 3 pt dog at home. Hopefully we will have our chance against the ACC in the NCAA's.

i wish that would happen, i’d take the niners for some easy money.

Not arguing the point about Duke, but I'm curious, what has State done to warrant being ranked higher in preseason?

We returned 4 starters from last year which include;

 • 3 players that averaged double digit scoring
 • our top 3 rebounders
 • C-USA defensive player of the year
 • Preseason Wooden candidate/ 1st team C-USA/ 3rd team All-American
 • C-USA’s leading 3pt shooter (based on shots made)

Also returning is our backup point guard who played right at 20 minutes a game (and can outrun anybody on the court) and a sharpshooter that does not get much playing time but will hit from off the bench if you leave him open.

Add to that a JUCO All American wing player who will be our 6th man (and has a realistic shot at making C-USA’s 6th man of the year), a JUCO power forward/center with good size and hustle and 2 freshman guards who need some game time experience, but are expected to both make contributions this year.

Our weakness is at the point - at least that is what all the “experts” are saying.

Like a wise man always told me…“It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish that counts.” Pre-season polls are just something for the fans to argue about.

State and Duke are two different animals.

Does Duke get the benefit of the doubt this year pre season? Perhaps. Have they earned it. Yup. Even a thin Duke team will be a damn good squad because you know the 5 on the floor are Mc’D’s AA’s and they have perhaps the best coach in the game on the sidelines.

Looking at State, pre season hype and actual results don’t seem to pan out.

Anyone that doesn't think the ACC was just loaded last year needs to be woken up. NC State finished 2nd in the ACC last year and IMO lost very little from that team. Scooter Sherrill was injured late in the year and was seeing limited minutes anyway. They essentially only lost Marcus Melvin who was up and down all year. Hodge doesn't always stuff the stat sheet but if you watch that kid play in person, you will see why he is an all american. State's been past round 1 in the NCAA tournament for the past two years. With that being said, they aren't ranked much higher than your guys anyway.

Speaking of a bench I was watching the 88 title game on classic and Oklahoma played only 6 for the whole game…and the sixth man only played bout 11 minutes.

I don't remember. How many teams did the acc send to the NCAA last year?

I never said the ACC wasn't loaded last year and I didn't say the ACC isn't loaded this year.

Sherrill and Melvin both played an average of 30 minutes a game and gave solid numbers. Numbers that will not be replaced by anyone on that roster unless their last name is Hodge. State had 3 players last year that scored in double digits - 2 of them graduated (Evtimov was just shy of double digits, though). They also lost their leading rebounder, their 2nd leading shot blocker and their leading 3 point shooter (based on 3 pointers made). Hodge is a beast and will most likely lead the Wolfpack in every category (only one's he didn't from last year was rebounds & 3 pointers) - but he's just one guy.

No, actually they only made it past round 1 last year. N.C. State 2003 season results

Last year the ACC sent 6 teams to the NCAA. All 6 won their first round games, 2 made the Final Four. You are correct though, State got bounced in round 1 in 2003, I must have been thinking of the year before that when they lost to UConn in round 2.

State’s rebounding is really by committee. Melvin may have led the team but it wasn’t by a significant amount. Scooter played less as the season wore on and not at all (due to injury) in the NCAA tournament.

NC State will be fine. Sure Scooter was big last year. Would have loved to had him in the stretch vs Maryland and Vandy. Tony Bethal will add alot of leadership this year from the point. Atsur came on big time down the stretch last year. Watkins and Bennerman filled in great for Sherrill. Evtimov will be steady as usual. Simmons and Brackman will contribute alot as Freshman. I will say this…this state team could be very good,. The problem is they could finish further down in the league, because of the league strength. Look for them to be strong in March and have a good chance of making a run in the tourney.

Lefty that was a good one. Don’t think you would “win big” This isn’t the Kenny Inge led Pack. Those days are long gone. And to the “poster” cracking on Herbs coaching…thats getting old also. That ship has sailed. Bad coaches don’t finish second in the best league in the country

Chisox17 are you a niner or Tarheel?? Both?? He used to talk some major heel smack on the other board. I just know how these guys hate ACC fans that walk around their campus.

That's true. Jim Calhoun played that one into a National Championship...

Cusa had 6 teams, also the A-10 had 2 teams in the eliete 8.

How many teams are in conference USA??

All 6 won their first round games
Congrats - here's what the ACC did in the 1st round of the NCAA's last year; - Duke = 1 seed beat a 16 seed - N.C. State = 3 seed beat a 14 seed - Georgia Tech = 3 seed beat a 14 seed - Maryland = 4 seed beat a 13 seed - Wake Forest = 4 seed beat a 13 seed - Chapel Hill = 6 seed beat a 11 seed

Now I’m not arguing about the seeding (different subject entirely), but if the seeds are more than 2 or 3 apart the higher ranked seed is expected to win. Don’t come on here and make it out like you’re a bunch of world beaters when you won first round games you were supposed to win.

ElDuke, are you basing your opinion soley on the fact that State made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA’s or have you seen them play this year? Have you seen Charlotte play this year?

I happen to like State. My dad is an alum and I go to several of their football & basketball games (will be there Thurs. for Florida State). They’re the first team I pull for in football and the second I pull for in basketball. I think they’ll have a very good year - I just think at this point Charlotte has more overall talent returning and is going to be a better team. I don’t think that’s an insult to State - State is going to be very good, but to me they have more question marks then we do. If Bethel is as good as Hodge says he is, and if Watkins/Collins/Simmons can hold down the paint then State will be a very tough team.

How many teams are in conference USA??
11 for football (Army is a football only team), 14 for all other sports (4 schools w/ out football). Part of me hates to see it go since it's just finally getting to be a good basketball conference (although it still has a lot of dead weight), the other part of me is tired of hearing "BCS" and am glad to be joining a conference that wants us.

A couple of years ago I had a discussion with a Carolina fan buddy.

I made the statement that Cincy had better player than Carolina. He told me I was crazy.
I then asked him to name 2 UC players. He couldn’t do it.
He makes the uneducated statement, then can’t back it up.

ACC fans are myopic.
