HIT AND RUN â
Out came Michigan with a mighty roar with Mike Hart behind to close the door.
Then out came 60 Mountaineers with blood in their eyes and determination in their hearts.
You know the rest of the story.
Appalachian rang a victory bell Saturday afternoon heard around the world, posting one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
Or was it an upset? Sure, the Mountaineers bumped off the No. 5 team in the country, making house pets out of the Wolverines.
We knew Appalachian was good. Perhaps some of us didnât know how good, but good enough to win two straight NCAA Division I-AA championships. The Apps were 14-1 last year and 12-3 the year before, wrapping up their national championship both seasons.
Now the Mountaineers are up on the super highway, riding high and mighty, fearing no team no matter the size.
Now, however, before Texas, LSU, Southern Cal or anyone else smiles and says âCome on and play us and weâll pay you $400,000,â they will do some thinking. No team in the country will take the Apps as an easy season opener, no not again, not in the immediate future anyway.
