App at Michigan

Already talking about the financial impact of yesterday's game.

It probably will end up meaning much, much more to Appalachian State. Only hours after the game, Peacock was dreaming of the impact the victory might have at his school: more applicants for enrollment, more academically qualified freshmen, greater donations from alumni and more school spirit.
The Mountaineers couldn’t wait to get back to Boone. After beating the Wolverines, the team flew back to an airport in Johnson City, Tenn., about 55 miles from campus. The team’s four buses were greeted 10 miles from town by a caravan of fire trucks, police cars and ambulances.

“I thought there was a bad wreck,” Moore.
Classic!
HIT AND RUN —

Out came Michigan with a mighty roar with Mike Hart behind to close the door.

Then out came 60 Mountaineers with blood in their eyes and determination in their hearts.
You know the rest of the story.

Appalachian rang a victory bell Saturday afternoon heard around the world, posting one of the biggest upsets in college football history.

Or was it an upset? Sure, the Mountaineers bumped off the No. 5 team in the country, making house pets out of the Wolverines.

We knew Appalachian was good. Perhaps some of us didn’t know how good, but good enough to win two straight NCAA Division I-AA championships. The Apps were 14-1 last year and 12-3 the year before, wrapping up their national championship both seasons.

Now the Mountaineers are up on the super highway, riding high and mighty, fearing no team no matter the size.

Now, however, before Texas, LSU, Southern Cal or anyone else smiles and says “Come on and play us and we’ll pay you $400,000,” they will do some thinking. No team in the country will take the Apps as an easy season opener, no not again, not in the immediate future anyway.

Yosef, the Mountaineer mascot, who goes around shooting his Kentucky long rifle in the air when the team pleases fans, left enough gun powder smoke in the nostrils of 109,240 Michigan fans Saturday that they will remember Appalachian for a long time. But they will probably get over their headache sooner than some who attended the arrival party in Boone last night.

whacha think Judy and Phil’s first thoughts were when they heard the news App won?

I would honestly say that App State’s victory may have been the deal sealer FOR football. The BOT will have a difficult time saying no when they realize the impact the win gives them in visibility, students and donations.

Phil:“Ah, to the greater glory of our mutual master the great Chapel Hill! HAHAHAHAHA! Let our glorious mothership now usurp this victory for herself by imposing UNCB on the wayward children in Boone!”

Judy:“Yes master, of course master, greater glory for the mothership master.”

at first i was very Very upset that this happened. I thought that after that win we were potentially screwed from a standpoint of ever being anything successful in football.

However, after sleeping on it, and seeing other say it, I have no doubt that this has to take anything out of the tank of the anti-football crowd. With that being said, if football is a NO at the end of this semester, I am done from any ties to the University.

I honestly think Phil and Judy dropped a mental F-bomb.

that picture of the kid calling his mom is one of the most touching pictures I have seen.

ID, CoCo Hillary is a redshirt freshman receiver from Edgefield, SC, population 4,520. Hillary is the backup “M” receiver. He had 4 receptions (most for ASU) for 63 yards (2nd for ASU) yesterday, the longest for 27 yards. Hillary is a converted quarterback and played the opposition’s best offensive athlete on the scout team last season.

He had over 3,100 yards of total offense (2,300+ passing, 800+ rushing) and 37 touchdowns at Strom Thurmond, winning the 2005 South Carolina 3A state championship. Hillary was also the SC 3A State Player of the Year and second-team all-state by The State.

Nice “shot” from CBS Sportsline regarding the ASU Michigan game:

Nice tuneup game by Appalachian State, which enters the Power Poll this week at No. 10. Sure, Jerry Moore’s squad needed to work the kinks out before playing Lenoir-Rhyne. But to beat Michigan and grab a $400,000 guarantee? Moore has to quit scheduling patsies in the non-conference.

jealousy. thats all i can say.

Has anyone ever face to face asked Judy whether she wants football? Or is everyone content to take the feelings of anonymous posters that “assure” you she is anti-football.

I have and I know her answer. Sorry folks, I won’t break a 30+ year confidence with her. Judy is not going to reveal her thoughts because there are only two spokesmen on football… Mac Everett and Dr. Phil.

End of discussion.

Has anyone ever face to face asked Judy whether she wants football? Or is everyone content to take the feelings of anonymous posters that "assure" you she is anti-football.

where did I say her thoughts on football? I merely said the mental f-bomb due to this penning Phil against a wall even more, and for Judy it can’t be good that another program is doing better than we are on any level on any stage.

I actually know Judy’s opinion of football, from a very reliable source, lets just say I hope metro has good health insurance if he were to find out. Either way as hp said, it really doesn’t matter what she thinks.

First of all, I do not disagree with most of this thread (this was an awesome win, might have an impact on Charlotte football, etc.)

Anyway, I think this is maybe less of an upset than some believe. There are approx. 120 Bowl Division Teams (yeah yeah my #is wrong) , but App. is not the 121st best team in college football. They are more realistically in the top 50 or 70 of all football teams (Bowl or Championship div.; D1-A or AA). Michigan might not be the 5th best team in the nation. Maybe more like 15th best (being the reputed most succesful program of all time gets you a few votes here and there sometimes). As far as competition goes, it is not that unbelievable for the 50 or 70th best team in the nation to beat a top 25 team.

I am not trying to trvialize the huge importance of this win for App. and the world. I am just trying to make a point that App. is an awesome football team that beat a team that is not that much better them (according to my figures above).

I wish I had a little one again after seeing the last video.

Michigan started playing football in 1881. During that time, the winningest program in college football history has only lost 22 games to teams that finished with a losing record, and hasn’t dropped a game to a non-D-I team, if you can call anyone that back in the day, since a 1928 17-7 loss to Ohio Wesleyan 17-7 1928. With that in mind, before today, here were Michigan’s five worst losses (considering how good the Michigan team was compared to the team it lost to) …

 1. 1976 at Purdue 16-14
 2. 1969 Michigan State 23-12
 3. 1939 Minnesota 20-7
 4. 1954 Indiana 13-9
 5. 1939 at Illinois 16-7

i just saw that

WOW!!!
