To my Niner mates I must confess-> I’m close to being a casual fan, i.e., only watching the Niners when the bandwagon gets rolled out. Up till this year, I bought season tickets every year Halton was open. Not this year-> I just upped my monies to the 49er Club. Please note I live out of state, and sent all tickets back to Charlotte except one game for which I would fly into town for with my wife or one of my kids for a weekend visit. Don’t get me wrong, my annual contribution was modest but nonetheless their for the Niners.
Perhaps I’m all wet here, but this early into the season and Coach Lutz is going back to the drawing board? How many times is this going to happen? I don’t think I can bear much more. IMHO the slide started back in the Grier senior season, which I think was like 4 yrs ago? Lutz has had a few good years-> The first season with Watkins recruits and bumping off a very good Harrick URI squad with Lamar Odom in the NCAA 1rst round (That squad of Niners played with more heart than any I’ve seen since); The lone White year and bumping off Tenn in 1rst round; And Joby’s senior year, even though they lost to ND. Other than that, there’s been spits and spurts, but no consistantly good play over a full season (I don’t want to talk about the flameouts in post-season).
I know programs such as ours can go for significant periods moving sideways or down. I’m just frustrated. The other comments on this board about change are well spoken-> We’ve lost the upward momentum of the Mullins years.
I will admit that with the move from the old C-USA to the A10, a lot of that energy was lost. What college player and fan could not get stoked for Memphis, Cinci, Louisville, Marq? Even though the A10 does have a few good teams (X, Dayton, GW) I don’t get excited about watching them, let alone the lesser part of the A10. Right now the MVC is much better to watch to me than the A10.
To be a Niner fan is tough these days for me. I’ll never talk’em down, and will continue to send my $$$, but I’m having a hard time getting excited about Niner BB.

Unfortunatly this is my problem with Bobby, he isn’t going back to the drawing board. He just keeps doing the same shit that doesn’t work.

I think Bobby’s proven he’s taken us as far as he can without getting an impact player. I hoped he would bring someone in to take us to the next level since he can’t do it with xs and os and he almost had that guy in Beasley but we all know how that turned out. Time to move on to someone who can coach some basketball and hope they can get us turned around quick.

Thats fine and probably true but its not our recruiting thats hurting us its the actual coaching that Bobby is supposed to be doing.

I am right there with you NinerFan. I graduated from Charlotte in 2000 and have been a loyal fan since. I love the Niners and the school but this is just depressing. In 2004 I went to The Ohio State University and received a graduate degree, became a huge Buckeye FOOTBALL fan, and in 2 years never went to a Buckeye basketball game. I’ve never been on their basketball message board and have never decreased my loyalty to Charlotte.
But I can’t take much more of Lutz & Rose and 3 point basketball and no defense. Why shouldn’t I be a Buckeye fan in all sports. I graduated from there as well. I live in Big 10 country. I love their football team and am very proud of being a Buckeye.
I am really struggling over why I should continue to support a school that so obviously doesn’t care as much as many of us do.
you know you can root for 2 teams as long one is the clear favorite (i guess you would struggle with this still) and as long as they aren’t rivals / play in the same conference, ect.

I’ve always disliked people who root for two teams. The good thing about Ohio State is they hate Cincinnati even more than Charlotte does.
Oh, and with Ohio St. I might actually see them on TV!
Looking ahead to next year, it doesn’t get much better from a recruiting standpoint. We do have Phil coming in, but the early returns on him are less than stellar. Wilderness is supposedly a good defender, but like all of our new signees, he is not highly ranked. That says alot right there. It used to be that we would get 2-3 Top 60-100 guys (h.s. or transfer), with the remaining guys falling somewhere in the Top 101-200 range (Top 50 Juco). Now we’re struggling to recruit guys in the Top 175 range. It reminds me of that Nationwide commercial:“Life comes at you fast!”

Here is our situation. The basketball team is horrible. We have missed out on the chance to get a law school. Chapel hill and state are invading our backyard at the Dole complex in Kannapolis. We are the third largest school in the state but are 13 out of 16 in funding. Now I saw in the Observer that chapel hill will be starting a branch of their med.school at CMC in Charlotte. Football and the name change have beentaken off the table. What the hell are our administrators doing about this.-Nothing

Ouch, that hurt. We really are the “red-headed stepchild” .

[in reference to Phil Jones] Yes. And he is at ALL of the games.
Is that a good thing?
Hmmm, I didn’t say did I?
