ASU to Conduct Football Feasibility Study
I agree with this. And I think UCF, ASU, us, ECU and GA St is a good start. Just need to find 3 more teams at min - preferably that have a decent basketball rep. I still thinking making a pitch to Memphis would be wise. Could throw in UAB and Southern Miss.

Or make a pitch to Cincy, Louisville, Memphis, UCF, Us, ECU, Memphis, ASU - that is 8 right there and one heck of a conference. Add in GA St and USF if the BE falls apart and maybe 2 more. All depends on how happy in the BE Cincy and Louisville are. I got the notion from talking to Louisville fans last Dec that they don’t like it. I would guess though as long as the BE maintains their autobid they won’t goo anywhere. If the league starts to fall apart and reform though a pitch could be made.
Cincy and Louisville would be BC$ conference, that’s a lot of money to leave behind.

Right - which is why I said if the BE implodes or starts to fall apart. If it does then I am sure they would listen, if it doesn’t then no way do they leave.

Here is the problem. Our program will never fully manifest itself in strung out geography. The local radio and tv waves will never be excited for Xavier - Charlotte. While I disagree with those we play in the Big South or Southern, the general theme is correct. There are no St Joes grads in your office to talk smack with.

I don’t understand how anyone can view ECU as a step down to us. They are leaps and bounds ahead of us athletically as a whole/image.

We need to find a home, and ASU and ECU would be perfect fits in some kind of a new league focused below the Mason Dixon.
Not really…they’re biggest advantage over us is in fan support/football and probably baseball. They’re even or below us in most every other sport, in general. I would have no problem being in a league with ECU though…Ap State, not REAL crazy about, but I guess that would be better than some of these other suggestions I’ve seen.

Being in a conference with App State and ECU would mean instant rivalries for football and all sports, something we do not have at this time.

I think App State’s fanbase is more delusional than our own…

One poster actually says that App St owns the Charlotte market more than we could.

Give them a few years of not winning championships, or just a few more years post-Michigan win and this App St fad will start to go away.

all we need are a couple trips past the first weekend of the dance (not just a flash in the pan) and the bandwagon will be a-rolling

But here’s the problem, I don’t want to talk smack with ASU or ECU. I understand wanting a rival. But a below the Mason Dixon line conference with ASU and ECU is always going to be considered 2nd rate to the ACC and SEC. I honestly doen’t see it as being any better than the Southern Conf or Sunbelt. Yes, maybe in a new league the teams will be slightly better, but the perception will be the same. Wingate and Catawba have a close, local rivalry. But outside of the 2 schools involved, who cares?

Anybody readily have the on campus/ off campus student % of Charlotte and ASU?

I hear you - but the only league that we have a realistic shot of joining that is close the ACC or SEC is the Big East. Barring a complete shakeup in college athletics the Big East is it - and while I would love to be there and think if the chips fall right we could get in, the chance of that happening is relatively small. That means we need to be looking forward to building the best options we can. This is what we get for dragging our feet with football.

I don’t know how any of you see this as a positive for us, rivalry or whatever

All depends on how it shakes out. They could jump in front of us and take our slot in a potential conference. Which would be bad. Them going FBS would also be bad for us from a recruiting point of view. With that said if we can talk ASU and ECU into joining us, that is a decent foundation for the all new conference that has been discussed. So I guess I can see this being anywhere from OK to disaster.

Agreed. I get frustrated with ACC schools not wanting to play us (specifically UNC-CH). But I totally understand their logic and agree with it.

If there is a magic Alice in Wonderland pill our admin can swallow and get us in a BCS league (see USF) then I am certainly 100% for it, and have no real rivals close. As Wup said, chances are slim of that. About the odds our cheerleader uniforms get current or edgy.

The realistic supporter in me would rather aim for some morph of CUSA with rivals close by. Problem is that is 6 years from now at best.

I wonder if we would “accelerate” our leap to 1A football in 2015 if an offer were waiting for either above? Would require expansion of seats etc.

We really need the BCS to implode to some degree leveling the playing field and give us a better shot at finding a home.

I guess I’m saying, in the interim, I don’t care if we’re in the same conference with ASU or ECU. I think it would be better for us to be in a better conference than them, BCS league or not. If we’re in the same conference and they’re better than us, who then cares about a rivalry?

I think we should play them in football every year- name the game (like the “miner bowl” or the “gold bowl”, etc.) and play for a prize (like a “pick-axe”). If you want to make a rivalry, then embrace it, go all out, and make one.

After doing a little research, the only numbers I could find were from CollegeBoard. I decided to look up a few more just for fun.

Percentage of undergraduates living on campus
Charlotte: 25%
ASU: 33%
WFU: 70%
NCSU: 32%
UNC-CH: 47%
ECU: 19%

you expect this from dubois and Judy?

Remember this is a group that gave mac Everett and team 9 months to study football. Then took a year himself to review the findings. After that it was an 18 month fsl campaign and capital campaign that we have heard ZERO about. After those 18 months we finally got BOG approval to construct a stadium that wont break ground until may ( in which we may not even have a coach). At that same bog approval chapel hill was approved to expand. They are now under construction.

So no I don’t see this being sped up

I guess my question was rhetorical…? Its happened before. CUSA came to us in late 90s and said get football or else. Well…welcome to “or else.” I guess I hope if there was a carat dangling to join a league, we would put on the big boy pants.

Please Please Stop. When you summarize and lay it out like that I get sick to my stomach and it sucks all the life out of me thinking we are actually getting there. We will have to succeed despite ourselves.
