I'm laughing from my personal experiences with college. I don't think I ever wanted to go to a class because I was passionate about it. I went because I had to for attendance, wanted to make a good grade, be successful, and hopefully not be broke.
That sucks for you, but not everyone feels like that. Some people go to their classes because they’re excited about the material and passionate about the subject they study. Although I will say it’s more common to be excited about the material than the actual time spent in class itself, in my personal experience.
The bottom line is that this is a different conversation if Sideshow is writing it 3 days in advance about an e-mail his students had sent him. If I was a teacher and a student missed a test for something he knew about in advance like a rally or a game and never mentioned it to me once, he would get no sympathy from me. This rally didn’t catch them by surprise.
You know what... When you get a job you have rules and deadlines that if not met cost $$.Say for instance one of your employees went to the Obama rally, came in 2 hours late and made him/her miss a deliverable what would you do? Same concept. You don’t get do overs in real life.
College is about learning and about making good decisions- Life lessons are painful sometimes.

I pay my employer to be there, so work is perfectly analogous to school.

okay, let’s say the students paid to take the GMAT, or the GRE and failed to show up for that test, or showed up late?

Then the student is an idiot, because you can schedule and reschedule those exams easily.

I mean, it is safe to say that any student that would blow off any test is an idiot.
Your contract with the professor/instructor/lecturer is the syllabus. If you don’t like the terms in it, there is an opt-out period called Drop/Add.

Totally agree. That’d be the “learner-centered” thing to do, in case you get flak.
Perhaps. And the trade offs and consequences must be evaluated.
I agree that the students knew the consequences going in ahead of time. If they wanted a break they should have asked Prof. Sideshow in advance.
I think what’s disturbing though is that Prof. Sideshow is asking a bulletin board on NinerNation.net how to deal with this. If I were the two students, I would blackmail Prof. Sideshow and take a copy of this whole thread to the Dean if he didn’t let us retake the test. Professor Sideshow- I’m no expert on these things but don’t you think a group of fellow teachers would have been better to consult?!

I don’t think the students would have a leg to stand on, considering they agreed to the terms of the class. And he is not being unreasonable.

My point was that it is a bad analogy in this case to equate school to the real world.
Also, I somehow missed Sideshow’s post about his students. I’m not really commenting on that specifically.

That is a really good argument. Never thought of it that way.
In general though, if it was just missing class (and not a test), if I were a Prof, I would create an option that made the students choose among roughly equal consequences - either come to class, or attend the rally and complete an assignment relating the rally experience to the class subject, as much as possible. If you are really shooting for real world relevance, then assign options that all have meaningful consequences and let the student choose. That’s more real life than just blind obedience to an authority figure.
Sideshow, would you handle it the same if it were a McCain rally?
I understand that your class is important, especially because it is a night class, and that a test in that class is even more important. But the fact of the matter is, that this may have been one of the single biggest events in this school’s history. If you are downplaying this event, I will assume that you weren’t there. Regardless of your political affiliation, the atmosphere there was one of the most inspiring moments of my life.
I do think that there should be a recourse for these students, but I also believe that half credit is extremely harsh. Why not allow them to take the test at a later date, with no penalty… but make their make-up test much more difficult than the original? In that case, they still have an opportunity to make full credit, but they will have to work much harder to do so.
