Basketball 2019-2020

ill take the under on 13 wins. We are garbage, this is going to be a 5-10 year project sadly.

Wow, that level of pessimism is record setting. I think we should see substantial improvement in 3 years. It isn’t just where we stand RPI and record wise that must change, but the perception of our program to recruits. That is the key today, and some improvement on the court will open doors for us on kids that will not talk to us today. Therefore, it will take a few cycles (seasons) to get the talent we need, but 5-10 years means we have missed on the coaching hire again.

Players with a year in the system plus solid recruiting class to me means I think we see a big jump, 16-17 wins is where I think we land. Sanchez will actually have a complete roster with depth. I mean we hare having problems just practicing with the bench we have now.

At some point this shit conference should start to work in our favor with this rebuilding. Getting to 16 wins shouldnt be too tough.

5-10 years lol.

No, just no.

My guess for next season is to finish around .500. What I’m certain of is that anything short of an undefeated season will be considered failure by a few of you.

Mullins inherited a dumpster fire too… We went 8 to 18, to NCAA’s… Fair or not, that’s my barometer for success with Sanchez.

Yeah. The pessimism of a “few of you” is interesting. Makes me wonder why you’d even waste your time following NINER sports, much less come here and publicly agonize over our bottomless pit of ineptitude and hopelessness.

Mine too. Our roster next seadon should be able to win 17 or more games.

Well said S9er.

Even that is generous of the fanbase which has had to endure going on 15 years of decline and frequent ineptitude.

Before “some of you” shit on our impatience, how about appreciating the few of us that are left. The program has already run off thousands.

Don’t forget that we are the solids that sink to the bottom of this shit conference. If we cannot compete here then we cannot compete in a puke conference just above the shit one.

But what does that mean? If Sanchez doesn’t engineer a turnaround that, at a minimum, is as good as Mullins (who everyone agrees pulled off a miraculous turnaround), then he’s a bad hire and a failure? Do you think he should be fired if he doesn’t do that? Mullins did a very good job, but he also got a little lucky with Dinkins, followed by two very mediocre seasons after Dinkins left with sub .500 records in the Sun Belt conference. Mullins actually took longer to build more consistent success. To me, comparing Sanchez to Mullins’ first 3 years sounds more like aspirations than realistic minimum standards.

I’d be happy to see us compete for the top of the conference in year 3, and to build some momentum for sustained success in years 4 and 5 too. But I don’t expect NCAA’s anytime soon given the depths the last three coaches have left this program at and the fact it all rides on a run of 3 - 4 games in the conference tournament for the foreseeable future. I do think Sanchez is more promising so far than the last two coaches have been in year one, even if the season record ends up worse. We are losing a lot of close games, I don’t think it’s too hard to see how a small infusion of talent and depth could help turn more of those into wins. The biggest concern to me right now is the lack of balance on the roster, and whether the losing hurts the young players’ development.

Probably not fair considering that we probably won’t be playing the Western Carolina and Coastal Carolina teams next season. I think we may be able to win 42% of our conference games in year 2 like Mullins did. NCAA’s in year 3 only if we win the conference championship.

Dowless, we have, did, and will assuredly continue to play some slop out of conference games… Apples to apples, that Sunbelt league was better then this CUSA league. I have faith the new kids get their sea legs and can do some CUSA work, I think 18 wins is a attainable goal… Left some games on the table this year for sure. Its doable.

Ninerken- you have your measuring stick, I’ll have mine- and it will be very short sighted (This might be blasphemous around here, but Mullins isn’t the guy I want to measure Sanchez against… Give me Wat or Lutz and WIN NCAA games) I hope Sanchez is as lucky with one of next years class (with Dink I mean, we could use a game changer like that

I wish I could forget. We are a BIG reason why this league sucks. I don’t get people acting like we are better than CUSA when the reality has shown we aren’t even middle of the pack. We have to win and then we can talk shit. Maybe we are finally positioned well.

NCAA’s in year three??? I would be ecstatic but that won’t happen with our current high school team or the recruits we bring in.

Jeff Mullins inherited a very bad team when he came here. His first season was a disaster but by year three he had us in the NCAA’s. Mostly he did it with overlooked players who he saw something in. For the most part, guys that played under Mullins got better every year. It can be done again. I believe the building blocks are there with our incoming class. The new guys will also hopefully be quicker to buy into Sanchez’s system.

Our issue hasn’t really been recruiting. Major recruited well, Price not so much, but Sanchez recruited one of the top classes in the league without being here long enough to develop much of a relationship with kids.

If Sanchez can coach, he will win with the talent he is bringing in.

If you are expecting classes of 4 and 5 star kids - I have news for you, that has never been us.

And we all need to remember… The NCAA’s in this league means playing really well over a 4 or 5 day period in March .

We just don’t have enough data yet. It sucks, but it’s just the truth. There are some promising signs (UTSA game was not one of them), but it’s way too early to say whether Sanchez knows what he’s doing or not. I think he’s done a decent job with what he has. I expect him to do better next year with more options. I’ve made it this far, I might as well stick around and see what happens.
