BBQ Snob Thread

Phil’s bbq pit in Black Mountain, NC. Stopped there on the way back from the mountains off I-40 I believe. They have smoked spicy bbq meatballs that are unreal and definitely a must try.
Also had their pulled pork and brisket which was good but the meatballs is where it’s at.

Is this the place that’s not far from the interstate and on the south side of the interstate? Or is it located more in the town of Black Mountain?

It was right off the interstate. Maybe 1/2 mile off ramp. Has thousands of hats hung from ceiling. No joke, meatballs looked like they had a smoke ring, lol.

Ed Mitchell was born and raised and starting making BBQ in my home town years ago. Unfortuantely, he was charged with embezzelment, closed shop, and moved to the Raleigh/Durham area. Good food.
Living in Dallas for a little over two years now I have really been spoiled. The beef brisket in TX is second to none. Any place that wants customers around here has legit smokers. The bark and flavor they get out of those cuts is mind bending.

I do crave a nice NC pulled pork sammich with some slaw and sauce every once in a while though.

Ribs? Ribs are good everywhere. I love ribs.

Oh, the sausage in TX is excellent too, especially places that make their own smoked jalapeno & cheddar sausages.
I’ve been to Texas a bunch, and I generally agree, TX BBQ is legit. It makes me angry that so many places in NC claim to be BBQ places like Mac’s Speedshop and Moe’s in Asheville that as best I can tell (and know for sure with Moe’s) that they have an “electric smoker” aka an OVEN, and then they smolder some wood inside.

If you go to Rudy’s in Texas, every location has a wood burning fire going inside.

Exceptions to this in Charlotte notably are: Midwood Smokehouse and McKoy’s - my two favorite Charlotte locations. The BBQ at both places comes out nice and smoky, though I give the edge to McKoys for being true traditional BBQ. It’s not soppy like at Macs or the other wannabe locations around town. I went to a place in Asheville where the owner bragged at me that the ribs were so tender they fell off the bone. They pretty clearly had been boiled and then thrown on a grill… disgusting.

Mac’s >>>> Midwood Smokehouse.
Mac’s >>>> Midwood Smokehouse.
I disagree big time.

Macs is not as good as it used to be.

After working in the Midwood Smokehouse building for almost 2 years now, I no longer have much of a taste for BBQ unfortunately. I didn’t even eat there much, but just smelling it every day has made me lose my appetite for BBQ.

Off of Exit 64 away from town

What a glowing endorsement.

All this BBQ talk, and then my buddy scoops me for lunch and suggests Midwood! We went, it was awesome as usual.

McKoys > Midwood > Bill Spoons > All > Macs fake BBQ biker bar

What a glowing endorsement.
It isn’t a slight on midwood smokehouse at all. Just smelling the same thing every day starts to get old. Driving by any BBQ restaurant these days makes me lose my appetite. I never crave BBQ any more.

Anyway, Macs used to be really good, but now it is among the worst BBQ in the city IMO.

Saucemans on West Blvd in Southend is good stuff though.

What are the best 3 BBQ places in Charlotte?

Mckoys, midwood, bill spoons (very tradional eastern NC whole hog style)
Mckoys, midwood, bill spoons (very tradional eastern NC whole hog style)
agree, but for the non-eastern style BBQ lover, they’re not going to like that lit at all.
