Best BBQ in town..

Gary’s BBQ in Kannapolis is solid

Also, the key to a great BBQ place is the slaw. If the slaw is yellow or white, you're automatically out of contention. Bubba's has white slaw which is a complete injustice to any true fan of BBQ.

Totally agree to that… Red Slaw is the only way to go.

Guys when Ktown refers to "Spoons" he is referring to "Bill Spoon's", not "Spoons." Just wanted to clarify that, to make sure the right place gets its credit, not the other place. (although Spoons is reeaally good!)

Really?

I had no idea there was a “Spoon’s”.

Thanks for clarifying Chisox…it IS in fact Bill Spoon’s on South Blvd.

If “Spoon’s” is what JCL was talking about…that makes alot more sense now.

Bill Spoon’s on South Blvd RULES!!!

Never eaten at Spoons. I was referring to Bill’s on South Blvd. It’s not terrible but you just have to consider that when you spent the first 17 years of your life in Lexington, it’s gonna be hard to find BBQ in Charlotte to be up to par. I just wasn’t impressed with anything Spoon’s had to offer. Even their sweet tea disappointed.

I thought you were some kind of buffalo yankee.

I thought you were some kind of buffalo yankee.

Because I pull for the Bills and Sabres? Nope, born/raised in the sunny south and never lived anywhere outside of Lexington/Charlotte. I hate the north actually. I just happen to be a diehard fan of a couple pro teams there. Odd, I know.

I made a word document of all of the suggestions so far for my own reference. Anyone else can print this out if they’d like.

Also, try Hog Heaven at the corner of Eastway and Sugar Creek.

Back in the early 90’s, they used to have a sign out front that said “Lexington style BBQ served here.”

Often imitated but never duplicated…

I think the best thing about Lexington Q is the entire meal as a whole. It’s not just the BBQ. It’s the BBQ, the BBQ dip, the slaw, the fries, the hushpuppies and the sweet tea. There is no weakness with any of those. Around Charlotte, you usually find a winner with one or two of those but never all of them at the same place and rarely with the BBQ or slaw, period.

And places that cook anything but the shoulder and use gas aren’t going to come close to quality BBQ. I’ve spent many mornings in the back of The Monk watching those guys turn shoulders over the freshly chopped wood as they cook for hours. You just can’t get that kind of smokey flavor from cooking with gas.

For all you Lexington natives and others, I was born and raised in Tyro, NC and the BBQ cooked up and served by our Tyro United Methodist Men most Thanksgivings and every Christmas is a 30 year old tradition. It is the freshest, best BBQ you can put in you mouth. The Monk’s is good, but there is genuine Love that goes into our Boston Butts and shoulders. We make a sandwich that has twice the meat of anyone in town. We’re on the corner of the Church property under the yellow tent right on Hwy. 150 two or three times a year (follow your nose and the smoke, we still use real wood), but always just before Christmas. Come by this Christmas and see for yourself! Ask for Tyro Niner or Tom.

Grandma’s.

Other than the Christmas one, how about giving a heads up right before you guys do it?

Thanks, I will! It’s for a good cause!
I would recommend Elliott’s Barbecue on Independence. It is in the shopping center where Media Play used to be.

It is the best barbecue I have had in Charlotte since Rogers closed down a few years ago.
Shhhhh, a Memphis couple owns and runs that joint.

What did you mean when you posted on the memphis board that no one in Charlotte knew we existed (or something like that)?

BTW, memphis bbq is good, but Lexington is much better.

I'll drink to that.

My favorite place is Lexington BBQ on Business 85 at W Center Str Exit.

Best Ever. Speedy’s in Southmont was a close 2nd, but on the way to High Rock for the 4th, I was devastated to see the entire building was leveled and had to close due to widening of Highway 8. Very sad, grew up going to the lake and Speedys was always in order. Now, I’ll have to frequent the other closer places, Cooks (pretty good), and Southern BBQ 2 ( good, but not great). Haven’t tried Jimmies back closer to 85, but will the next time I go.
Troutmans is awesome too, Pee Wee Troutman was good friends with my Paw Paw (we have property next ot each other on High Rock Lake, and Pee Wee’s son (Brent) still lives in their place year round, so we party every time I’m there and he always has some product on hand.

outsiders using Charlottes economy for jobs, I’m shocked.

Well being from Gaston County I am going to check in with ROs BBQ in Gastonia as well as Bridges BBQ in Shelby. Two very fine establishments to say the least. I am also a fan of R&R, both locations. They always have good food and ussually atleast one cute waitress!

I almost forgot The BBQ Kings. One in Lincolnton where they still SHOUT your order back to the cooks. No computers needed there and they still ALWAYS get the order right, this absolutely amazes me. The other BBQ King is on Wilkinson Blvd going into the city, still a drive in and I can remember eating there when I was young on trips into the city from Belmont.

They live here now! I guess I should have said “former”.

“What did you mean when you posted on the memphis board that no one in Charlotte knew we existed (or something like that)?”

I simply meant your lack of coverage in the area media and the fact that I hardly see any 49er items being worn or on cars in my area of town. I did state that it was the opposite in the University area, K-Town, and Concord.

The 6BC stuff is crap squid. Don’t be or come off as two faced. If you can’t stand us, then don’t play it off on this board while you backstab us on another.
