Billy Packer.

I was listening on the way home this evening when someone called in during the conference expansion discussion and suggested us as a replacement for Arkansas in the SEC.

THE MOTHER F***ING SEC!

The person was serious. Even Packer apparently felt sorry enough for this guy that he didn’t rip into him as you’d expect. Him and the other guys gently talked this guy down from whatever whacko ledge he was on.

We have 1 real advantage when we call those silly damn shows on that gerbel powered channel. Most of our callers are graduates and educated. This guy may of been the first but he most assuredly was not the later.

Please, if you don’t know what you’re talking about don’t associate yourself publically with the Charlotte 49ers. PLEASE!

I have trouble comprehending it, too. They couldn’t dominate the terrible ACC, but they want to join the SEC? They’d be battling to be the worst team in the conference.

Billy Packer finally gave us props? Well it’s about time though I wouldn’t get too carried away with it. Billy Packer will turn on you quick if you start to struggle. I always thought he was a jerk for the crap he gave St. Joes for getting a #1 seed that they deserved in 04 season.

I know several Wake alum’s who have stated he’s bitter that his jersey has never been retired at WF.

I have no idea what Clemson would do if given the opportunity to join the SEC. I honestly believe it’s 50/50 they would leave. It could be harder for them to win in the SEC, I agree. But I’m sure part of the decision would be based on revenue. The revenues of all athletic depts were posted in a different thread. 6 of the top 12 were from the SEC. Most surprisingly to me was that Auburn was 7th. I was really surprised they were ahead of UT, UGA, UVA, UNC-CH, UK. Clemson was 34th. I’m sure Clemson looks at an Auburn and thinks they should be making that much too.

On the other hand, if Clemson joined the SEC, they would have 3 teams with a Tiger as their mascot.

I’d tell you what Clemson would do. They run to the SEC and so would 95% of all schools in the South. Clemson would go into the next ACC meeting and say “F*** You!, F*** You!, F*** You!, Your Cool, and F*** You! Peace be-oaches! We’re out!”

College administrators love $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and the SEC has more than anyone!

Clemson, FSU, Georgia Tech, Miami; basically any team in the ACC outside of Chapel Hill, Duke and Virginia would not let the door hit them as they ran out.

Clemson is much more of a SEC mindset and better fit. Its rural, it worships football, its biggest rival is not a league team but an SEC team, geographically fits well. I think Clemson would fit perfect in the SEC. They average 81,000 on Sat!!

I think the ACC hurts them for football and you’d see Clemson a top 10 team quite often. The best talent in the south wants to play SEC ball because its a religion- even more than ACC is to hoops.

He told a story about when he played for NC State and went to Dayton to play. It was a crazy story but pretty much about it being a hard place to play even back then. Having stuff threw at them then getting escorted out by cops.

Billy was giving Packer hell for not giving Lutz squad more airtime. He also said the ACC was no match for the A-10 this season and not to many ACCers would have our record in A10.
Wow. This is beyond shocking. I’ve heard Mark give us love before on many occasions, but always figured it would be a cold day in hell when Billy would say anything positive about us or the A10. Very surprising and refreshing to hear that he said that.
Well, to even things out, Billy did say “luts” and was corrected by Mark that it is “lootz.” But, yeah, I was surprised to hear it, too.

He did say that THIS YEAR’s ACC was probably worse than the A10 team-for-team. The story he told about playing in Dayton was bad, kinda like when Niners fans dumped soda on the Sincy team after a game in Halton, but worse. The coolest thing about the story, though, was the differences in the rules that were in place then vs. now.
How do you call yourself a basketball analyst when you don’t even know how to pronounce the names of the coaches? It’s not like Lutz was just hired last week… this is his 12th year. We’ve played in the postseason 8 of those years so far.

I agree- they probably would say UGA is next on their list as rivals. Only about 70 miles apart, if that. They are a football school in a basketball league.

Well to be fair, SC was in the ACC, and the rivalry also occurs b/c it’s the only other large university comparable to Clemson in the state.

Don’t hide your confidence in this.

I don’t think it’s quite as clear cut as you’re making it. Academics play a role in these decisions too. The ACC thinks they are superior to any with the combination of athletics and academics. GT thinks they’re better than UGA and Clemson thinks they’re better than USC. They think the fact that they are in the ACC solidifies that.
