Bruce Tall interviews at WVU

For sure. Lambert will probably give priority to someone he has a connection to, but there will be a ton of quality coordinators from the FCS level, as well as some FBS position coaches, looking for the opportunity to move up. Most college football coaches are always looking for opportunities to advance in their profession. Lambert will start to look eventually as well.
I’m confident that Lambert will find a capable replacement*

But “plenty of coaches” or “ton of quality coordinators” looking to move at this time of year? I’m not so sure there will be a large number of a coaches looking to move right now.

I’m guessing that Aaron Curry, by start of Spring practice, takes the LB Coach title from Lambert. A comment was made by Lambert about Curry moving into office upstairs somewhere.

*-assuming management lets him fill open positions. Otherwise, HC/LB Coach/Special Teams Coach/Defensive Coordinator does come into play.
I think Richardson moved from part time to full time into Dayton’s slot on staff. I guess Curry will move into Richardson’s slot. If Tall left, I guess Lambert would have to be the DC this late in the game. I would be fine with holding off on hiring a DC until we are an FBS program, but I would be concerned about having 1 less body out on the recruiting trail.

Seems like special teams coach would be an easier spot to fill this late then defensive coordinator if Lambert needed something taken off his plate.

i don’t see time having any bearing on this whatsoever.

It’s Feb 11th. Plenty of time.

Maybe Lambert could get Grobe to replace Tall if he leaves. It’s unlikely but I think it’s more likely than Bruce Pearl being our basketball coach. Ha

Sure, several HCs also have ST coach responsibilities. Actually the timing is perfect if we have to hire a new DC, after signing day but before Spring practice.

I wonder what Mickey Matthews is doing now? He was the recently fired HC at JMU and is a friend of Lambert’s. Matthews was DC at West Texas State, DB Coach at Houston and TCU, Asst HC at Marshall, DB & Linebackers Coach at UGA, and DC at Baylor before he went to JMU. Seems like good timing to help out a friend who has all the right experience.

Good call…and he could stick it to JMU this season. ;D

Did JMU run a 3-4?

No, base 4-3.

Aggressive blitz packages too.

I’d be all for it

What do we have, 2 weeks before spring practice starts? I am sure Lambert will want a guy that knows the same defense we are running now, so it may not be a big deal as far as timeline. If we were changing defenses then we need time to implement that.

From what I heard at one of the chalk talks, we run the 3-4 defense mainly because it is easier to recruit LBs as opposed to stud DTs. Since we are still thin up front, I assume we will stick with the 3-4.

safe assumption IMHO.

Would love to see a list of candidates for this spot, we’ll be moving to CUSA after next year, that should help.

i have confidence that Lambert is aware of Tall’s intentions and the “what if” scenarios.

I think the timing of it all may lead to a guy like Matthews. Regardless of base formation, a DC change will change philosphy. Our defense will look different on the front 7 this year anyways (no bryan or hogan, JC addition at LB, and new depth on the front line) so switching to a 4-3 wouldn’t be that drastic IMO.

If Tall were to leave for WVU, Matthews would be a phenomenal hire.

If we were to hire Matthews, I’d imagine we’d stay 3-4, as someone pointed out Lambert’s recruiting philosophy is it’s easier to recruit for.

Update.

http://www.charlestondailymail.com/Sports/201402130122

A leading candidate, according to one source, is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant Phil Galiano, who coached for Greg Schiano both at Rutgers and with the Bucs. He served as an assistant special teams coach for Schiano in Tampa until the staff was let go after the 2013 season.

Well we now know Tall is looking… he’ll either leave this off-season or next…I’m sure Coach Lambert is prepared

I don’t know if he’s looking per say, but you never deny yourself to make upward trajectories in your career.

Coach Tall wasn’t looking. WVU came calling because he has some familiarity with WVU and some assistants on that staff. He is well respected in the field and opportunities for good coaches will come up. Virtually every guy on the staff has had an opportunity over the past two years to look at something else and all have stayed. Brad has earned great loyalty from his guys because he is a loyal guy and treats guys with respect and gives them the latitude to make decisions without being lorded over by micromanagement. Several guys have been in spots before where they had almost impossible working situations so Brad’s philosophy is a breath of fresh air. Guys won’t easily jump unless the money is just too much to turn down. Brad is what people think he is. A great person. Look no farther than that press conference where guys showed up from all over to see him named a HC. Made a lot more friends than enemies in the business.

FWIW Coach Tall was at Halton tonight hosting a few recruits.
