No, not true. Kelvin has a different job now. Bombarding him will do no good.
As for what the N&O would do on Clemson-N.C. State, their market is far different from ours. We have tons of Clemson grads here and circulate heavily in South Carolina in York, Chester and Lancaster counties. Itâs not an apples to apples comparison.
And I doubt the person who put that slideshow together had any ulterior motives. He put in all the photos he had from the game, period.
Nowhere near the number of Charlotte grads in the area⌠try again, Mike!
Well, if I can defend the AP photog a little, he did just send in all the photos he had from the game. You want your photos to tell the story of a game (obviously) so that a person could tell the outcome of the game without looking at the story. That's why there are so many of the Clemson over Charlotte photos where both teams are included. The staff at the O didn't pick and choose photos for that slideshow. Clemson won that game, and the photos should give you that impression.
According to your logic and metro, you are the problem.
I got news for you and Mike. There are more Charlotte grads in the Charlotte/Metro than all of those 3 together, plus ClemsonâŚDonât believe it, look it up!
It is obvious to me. Mike is the one that doesnât comprehend.
Heâs the damn broken recordâŚ
Clemson has tons of grads out there.
Chapel Hill has tons of grads out there
Who gives a rats ass? In my dumber days, that is when I was an Observer subscriber, I was never asked where I graduated.
Just because there are X number of graduates of a certain school living in a specific area does not mean they read the Observer.
I will assume that Mike believes that those of us who frequent NNN are idiots because he spews this flawed logic. There is an alternative to him thinking we are idiots, but saying it might violate some rules on here.
I wasnât really trying to defend the O as much as I was explaining the reason for the many Charlotte over Clemson photos in that set. The photog submitted his best photos, and those told the story. Iâm not at all saying the coverage of Charlotte sports isnât lacking or that the ACC teams do get significantly more coverage, but in this scenario here, itâs not the Oâs fault.

Mike has spoke out of both sides of his mouth. He says they only posted the AP photos with no rhyme or reason- just what was on the wire. Then he says all Clem pics are due to the demosâŚ

which is it Pinochio?
We posted all the photos we had. This is the reason for the makeup of the slideshow.
Clemson has a significant fanbase in our readership. Thatâs only relevant because, had you been playing, say, Minnesota, the web producer might have left some photos of the opposition out.
I talked to the person who posted it, who said theyâd be more sensitive next time.
I canât believe this has created such a ruckus. No offense, ruckus.
I can't believe this has created such a ruckus. No offense, ruckus.
In a rare case, Iâm gonna have to agree with Mike. Letâs pick our battles, guys. This certainly isnât one we should be all up in arms about. It wasnât the Observer slighting us at all. When we blow up over things like this, it lessens our voice when we have legit concerns.
Can we just see the statistics that back up the claim on the # of alums in the Charlotte metro area?
This comes up all of the time, but never is there any hard evidence supplied.
In generalities (yes, I have numbers, updated last week), Charlotte is No. 1, North Carolina is No. 2, and the gap isnât as wide as some here believe.
But thatâs only part of the story. People become fans of programs of which they are not alumni, as you know. The âwalmartâ fans, as theyâre called on here.
If alumni were the whole story, I would expect Niners stories on charlotteobserver.com to consistently be at the top of the hit charts in terms of unique users, especially since weâre the only consistent source. They are not.

you can't believe it?? :tumble: this is not the "upstate Observer" its the "Charlotte Observer"
and what did you ask the guy to be more âsensitiveâ to? How does that conversation go? âHey-- remember there is an NCAA school in our town, try to give them some equal coverage.â
what school in its own city would not be pissed at this???
Youâd think we are in Clemsonâs backyard:

Yes, because this business model is working SO WELL.
What comes first, fans or coverage? Do fans drive the # of stories, or does exposure drive the # of fans?
Case in point, the ONLY reason my family became tarhole fans upon moving to NC from Canada was because it was the first team they heard about. While this example canât apply to everyone, it is the case on many occasions.
Tarhole fans will not miss the Observer, they can get that coverage from anywhere.

I understand the point with the walmart fans, but you brought up Clemson earlier. No one just becomes a Clemson fan like they may a UNC-CH fan. I think that is part of the problem with this whole situation.
Iâm sure Clemson stories are generating record hits.
