There are several Coastal Athletic coaches that I would consider, starting with Kelsey at CofC, of course.
I think our job is way better - budget, facilities, exposure, path to tournament (dont HAVE to win league), recruiting profile, pay - BUT the question is for a coach at that level do they stay where they are and win longer and make a bigger jump than us to lower level P5 or take a modest bump up come to us and position themselves for higher profile P5 gig.
Majority of all jobs in Sun Belt, CUSA, MAC, etc⦠would view this as a step up. Another name I would keep tabs on is Mike Jones from UNCG. Has won at both Radford + UNCG.
Cremmins would never come here given Mark Price ending.
I was implying that profile not any of those specific individuals.
Last UNCW head coach to step up went to state. Weāve been irrelevant for 20 years and havenāt committed to winning. Not so sure this job looks as attractive as some might think.
I absolutely believe it could be super attractive, but not based on the way we handle things today. Lower salary than AAC peers, AD apparently trying to dictate which assistants to retain, letting players make decisions. Itās clown town over here rn.
No commitment to winning? Major and Ron, on paper, were good hires. They just didnāt work out. Major due to health and Ron, well because he was Ron.
Price was the dice roll
Outside of keeping Dink around in some
Capacity, I donāt expect any assistants to be retained. I didnāt hear that through any of my channels, but I do know they were worried about a mass player exit. Trying to keep assistants on staff was likely to retain a few players given the timeframe of the change and the worry about just having a complete roster.
WTH does ālower salary than our AAC peersā have to do with a comparison to UNCW?
I was impressed with how intensely the team played against Duke in the 2nd half even down by 20, Obviously they play hard for Fearne. Even Lee Rose had a chief recruiter. Maybe thatās the direction we should go. Keep Fearne and hire a firebrand recruiter like the guy (bad memory) that reeled in Henry.
Biff is trying it in footballā¦
Yep, Roseās chief recruiter was Bill Foster!
I think the concern would be we want a coach to play at the aac level and be successful without paying aac level wages. A coach might not opt to risk their future by accepting a modest increase in a job they view as difficult without fair compensation and risk thru upward trajectory.
If you believe Fearne can coach then get him his own " Brewster " for recruiting and get after it.
Itās a sad day when you and I are the voice of reason NC. Just sayinā
Iām not sure how to take that.
Thats what she said
As a joke of course
Ritchie at Furman, exciting brand of bball and has many NC players on his team. But he could be on that Al McGuire, Lefty Driesell trajectory and out of reach??
Given Mike Hillās flair for out of the box hires, there are some obvious names weāve left off.
#1. Heās never coached, but heās one of the greatest pure athletes of our generation. He won high school state titles basketball, football, soccer AND baseball. He went on to play professional baseball and win World Series MVP. Also won an Olympic gold medal for volleyball. And there aintāt no rule that says a dog canāt coach. Air Bud the golden retriever
#2. Sheās a woman. Sheās 104 years old. Sheās never coached a day in her life. But she has a dazzling NCAA track record. Her #11 seeded Loyola Ramblers upset Miami in the 2018 tournament, and then went on to shock #3 ranked Tennessee. After beating Nevada in the Sweet Sixteen and Kansas State in the Elite Eight, her squad advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 1963. Her #8 seeded team would knock off #1 Illinois next season. Thereās clearly some kind of magic there. Sister Jean the NCAA tournament nun.
#3. If weāre looking for fan involvement, here it is. Fans set the lineup, call plays, implement systems, and so on. Every fan in attendance gets access to an app that lets them make decisions. Even opposing fans, meaning we get their revenue and it encourages our fans to show up to outweigh them. The NCAAās first fan-coached team.
#4. Finally an option with coaching experience. Targeting the young demographic, we hold a nationwide NBA2K video game tournament with the winner getting the reins. Defense would be thrown out the door, and every possession down is either a three pointer with 20 seconds on the shot clock or an iso for a dunk. One big plus here is that we have the option to rage quit and go home in the first half if the game sucks. But if itās going well, itās like 1992 when Troy State beat DeVry 258-141 in a regulation game .The worldās best NBA2K player.
