Just wanted to post this as a stand-alone thread, but per JJ, we have received a committment from Carlos Williams, a 6’1 PG from Wabash CC (teammate of Jerrell Jamison and Antwon Coleman). He also received interest from Indiana, Auburn and Winthrop.

Just found on Hoop Scoop that Carlos Williams is ranked an 8 out of 10 in terms of how they rank their prospects…maybe they know something no one else does, but this is a huge ranking. Just to compare, they give Jamie Skeen a 6 and the three current Duke signees for 2006 all an 8 as well. William Graves, a UNC signee, is rated a 6. I can keep going down the line, but he is ranked very high by them even though he may have only had one offer from us. As of right now, they have us tied at #12 overall for recruiting classes for 2006.

yowzas! this guy must be a serious player
Can a four school that uses players for only two years be in a junior college league? We could be a heck of a juco program, right up there with Wabash.
Of course next year starting lineup could include Withers, Baldwin and Goldwire (if you base it on experience and minutes played thus far)…All freshman in the program at one point.
I wouldn’t get to bent out of shape about us having more than our share of Juco’s. It isn’t as if we have missed on a lot of them. They come with more experience than frosh, and when you are like us, where we miss on most legit top 100 HS talent, this is the route that has to play a key.
Take a look at how many non-BCS conference schools get the top 100 players year in and year out. You can count them generally on one or two hands. We have to take the best player possible and if it is Juco, and we keep going to 7 out of 9 NCAA tournaments, so be it.
Give me Cam Stephens, James Zimmerman, or Galen Young anyday over Martin Iti, Tyler Best, Kenny Whitehead, Jon Neely…
I guess Ok. State should be with us because that’s mostly what Eddie Sutton uses. The reason Bobby goes JUCO’s is because those guys don’t need to be ACC. They want PT and we can offer it. I’m not down about JUCO’s/transfers. We’ve had some stud players come from that route. Our best players though have been 4 year guys (Jarvis, Demarco, Jobey, Eddie, soon to be Curt). However guys like Galen, Cam or JZ can play for us any day.

As mentioned, he is a Top40 recruit nationally by Hoop Scoop, includes all players not just Jucos (it is rare for a JC to get that kind of rating). BT has us tied for 10th best class in their latest edition, due to the Williams signing. We are number 2 right now in 2007.
They have him listed as a 2G, does anyone know what position he will play for us ?
Coach can certaintly scout a player.
Interesting considering he did not play last year.
Hoop Scoop should be called Poop Scoop. Conference USA finished 2nd in their rankings because they used the old alignments, not the new ones as of July 1!
[FWIW, Cincy, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, and Memphis all finished with top 20 recruiting classes per Hoop Scoop.]
.
That is a lot of confidence from hoopscoop, especially since he didn’t play last year, that is amazing they usually take the guy off the radar. Coach is good at recruiting those type of guys. Potential recruit Freeman, sounds like another one that he usually signs.
Aug 29: Named pre-season First Team All-American by JuCoJUNCTION.
Apparently, he tore it up in a recent JUCO All-star camp in Tulsa.
Lefty,
Could you paraphrase the story’s highlight?

It’s weird cause some all of the recruiting websites have mixed reviews on Carlos.
According to Hoop Scoop.com he is one of the top JUCO’s in america and on Hoopsmasters.com is ranked #5 in america.
But then on Scout.com he is a 1 star prospect (where players like Mitch Mullis and Jerrell Jamison are both 3 stars) and on Rivals.com he is not rated yet.
Im sure it’s just a case of the last 2 not catching on yet.
It might have something to do with him not playing last year.
Some of the websites dont rank or do a poor job of ranking jucos. BLH or Run looked into a long time ago. Forget what they said.
BTW, Rodney White was #225 in the nation per one of those sites, but one of the top impact incoming freshman per ESPN’s service that year. It happens.
Rivals and Scout.com gradually rank players throughout the year. They start with the Top kids first and they get 5 stars…and so on. Don’t worry, his rating will move up as the season progresses and more people find out about him; and to the point he didn’t play last year. And it is true, the jucos are always the last to get ranked.
