Charleston Southern post-game

We kept it competitive for three and a half quarters but the Offense was off today and the Defense finally wore out. Matt was off today. He either threw high or low. When he’s off we are going to lose. Still happy to see them come off the bye and give a ranked team almost a whole game.

Hard to win when you give up 375 yards on the ground. I know Dline is young and lacking depth but I do not like the passive defensive scheme with 2 down linemen. Don’t know about today’s game but previous games nose guard is constantly getting double teamed but no backers shooting the A gaps.

It doesn’t help when the D-line gets pushed back 2 to 3 yards every play either.

Hopefully strength and conditioning along with maturity will help. Definitely need more help on dline

That was ugly. Except for the Gardner-Webb game, we have either blown out opponents or gotten blown out. If that’s not a sign of a young team I don’t know what is.

Growing pains.

We have football.

Hard to tell from the radio alone, but they seemed like a really good football team. Solid D, really effective running the ball. Sometimes you bring a knife to a gunfight

Amen brother

Why does the coaching staff hate Phillips? Ignoring the final 1 carry on the final drive, he had 3 carries for approximately 8 ypc and 2 of those 3 runs were AWESOME touchdown runs.

Only giving him 3 touches is inexcusable and the coaching staff needs to reevaluate what they’re doing there.

Barnwell, for comparison had 2 fumbles and 1.1 ypc.

Agreed…the two TD runs were awesome!! Not sure what else Phillips needs to do to earn more PT.

Anytime coach talks about the RB’s he compliments them both but always stresses that Barnwell is the starter and then makes sure Barnwell gets starter carries. It is like he wants to make sure Kalif understands his role is a backup for some reason.

There does seem to be a continual statement that we have 2 very good RB’s but Barnwell is the preferred back.

I had a blast at this game, even though we lost. Great turn out by the fans. I came with a few students and my gf, we had a ton of fun. We might of been a select few students there haha fun trip and a fun game, met a lot of nice Niners that were tailgaiting.

Game note side: The D just got wore down. They ran the option the whole game and we could not stop it. Not sure why though…375 yards on the ground, that is no bueno. Bruce Tall and Brad should of changed something up after the first several runs. We had some very good drives that led to some points and also no points. We are a young team and that will change a lot next year. Still very proud of the team and how hard we fought. Loved the crowd for the most part as well!

Per Matt and their guys, Phillips tweaked a knee and was unavailable during most of the 1st half.

better teams than ours couldn’t stop the option either. we are soft up front except for big Larry. Be patient, We will be fine.

I saw Phillips with the trainer late in 1st half, but they were looking at his shoulder.

I was disappointed in the DC this game during the end of the first half. We called a timeout and he had a chance to reiterate coaching wisdom to the entire D. The immediate next play? Offsides then safeties get beat deep for a 40 yard TD with 15 seconds left in the half. Our safeties are our most experienced players, too. DC can’t make the play either way, though, so it’s up to Cooper to stop getting demolished in coverage every game.

That said, the D held up well enough to win for most of the game.

There are some issues with the offense, though, but they’re mostly a result of so many freshmen.

Once a play is called in, the ball is going exactly where it was called, i.e. no reading the field, no pre-snap adjustments, etc.; that ball is being thrown to the pre-snap WR no matter what. Yes, Johnson is young, but let’s have him try to develop that skillet. I think he’s smart and good enough to do it. He’s going to need to learn it if he’s going to be the QB for 3 more years.

Our OLine has no chance to run block, but that should get better with strength conditioning. They’re immediately pushed back several yards on the play, which isn’t as bad with the pass out of the shotgun. They’re not bad, just way overpowered. This applies to the Dline, too.

I enjoy the hurry up, but we should make it an effort to burn up clock at the end of the half. We didn’t and gave CSU the ball back and it cost us 7 points.

We’re a first year team, so I am beyond impressed by a bunch of freshmen able to play so well, though.

I am impressed with where we are in the program after just part of one season. Team needs to grow and that takes time. Bummed to see us rush 3 and get beat over the top at the end of the 1st half. That was the big letdown for me on the D side. The defense showed improvement after the 1st drive of the 2nd half.

I didn’t expect to win, CSU has a good squad this season. They’ve never been to the FCS playoffs, ever, but they are undefeated in FCS play this season.

Our 3 largest plays of the game, a defensive lineman for CSU got hurt well away from the ball. 2 trainers run out, 30 seconds later the kid jogs off with no help. I don’t like saying this, but something was up with that. It was some pretty poor sportsmanship to be honest. It seemed to me to be a blatant attempt to slow down our offense and we were never that in sync entire game.

The spots of the ball all day by the officiating crew were just simply astonishing. I don’t think we got the benefit of the doubt on any spot all game. I saw some magical spots on CSUs possessions. . .

Reyes is a Junior, crap.

They had a sponsor, Charleston Crabhouse, for their first downs. So when do we start having “Bojangles first downs” lol

Agreed. We played them tough until we ran out of steam. We’ve got to keep in mind that we are thin just about everywhere… this is a skeleton team that will make up the core of our team in a few years, while leaving enough room to build around them so we’re not starting over when these guys graduate. I’m not worried.

Can we try to stay away from stuff like this? Maybe it was bull, maybe it wasn’t… but if we’re going to run the no huddle from start to finish, any injury to the defense is going to seem suspicious to us. Let’s not be like Oregon fans.

Didn’t really notice anything, but I admittedly had the game on the back burner for the most part. I will say, though, that at first glance I thought we got a freebie on that goal line fumble. Of course, we didn’t do jack squat with it…

Reyes is a Junior, crap.

…and we’ll be bigger, faster, stronger, and deeper when he’s a senior.

I hope never. Having said that, I ate dinner at the Crabhouse. :-X

Charleston Southern is having a magical season for them. They have a lot of seniors leaving. I suspect we’ll have few problems with them at home next year.
