Charlotte 49ers new branding unveil June 2020

Where’s the video?

Our name/mascot is a hard nut to crack in terms of a logo. We had a version of 49ers in the 90’s, and we can’t make norm our logo again, retro only please, so the letter C was the way to go. This C is distinguishable amongst other “C’s” like Cincinnati and reminds me of the Michigan M, with its chunky font. I’m glad we reduced our colors. I’ll be curious to see how gold is incorporated and what 49ers look like in a new font and how much that will be used on uniforms, etc. But for a primary logo, I’ll take this all day, everyday, from our previous logo.

That video gives me chills. The biggest thing I took from this isn’t the logo, it’s the move by the AD to FINALLY portray us as what we are, a huge metro university that is still GROWING!

We have begged to stop being the best kept secret for years, and this video embodies that. It looks to me like we are taking a stand, telling folks who we are, and are looking to dominate with a new brand. I love it.

I hate being associated with the line “best kept secret.” Whose fault is it that we are a secret? Our stealth marketing over the last 20 years has been terrible. We shouldn’t be a secret. We should be out there, in your face, the city’s university. We need to own the market as best we can, considering we are in ACC country.

Well, my soon to be 13 year old was like “man, that is sick”. I guess it does appeal to the young kids. Although she did follow up with “but I like the old one better”.

Well, that’s no “hot, hot, hot” but its pretty good,

I love the gold helmet but that’s what makes it awesome, the gold. It wasn’t the jerseys, it wasn’t the color scheme, it wasn’t the pants, it wasn’t uni combo, it was the gold helmet.

You can put this logo on a metallic gold helmet (and I hope they do).

I like the logo but love the vid.

The bookstore confirmed on Twitter that they will have gear with the new logo for sale starting at 12:49 on Tuesday.

OK, I’ve been thinking about this all day long now. Let’s flash back to 2000:

Massive re-brand. New logos are launched. We go from “UNC Charlotte” to just “CHARLOTTE”. Loved that. Logos unveiled. C-Pick - I seriously thought this was the best logo in university history, EVER. I LOVE the C-pick. I am blown away and over the moon about the re-brand. Start taking diagrams to tattoo parlors to see if they can do it justice…

Flash forward 20 years. New logo. Meh. I’ll wait for the launch when I see it in color, but so far today, not feeling anything near like I felt 20 years ago. Helmet is regression - it’s an inferior logo to the plain old C-pick we already had. I’m wondering if the re-branding is a result of the past administrations having gold in their hands but not able to do anything with it. Examples: constantly seeing the small “UNC” in apparel and items above the “Charlotte”, adding the “49ers” inside the C-pick. I don’t feel like we gave it a chance. Regardless, new logo is OK, but in my mind it’s clearly a step back from the plain old C-pick. Hopefully they know what they’re doing and the new kids love it, but I don’t.

Pros: in a few years we will have really solid “throw-back” unis. Maybe the kids will like the new logo?

Cons: that helmet sucks compared to our gold plain old C-pick helmet.

We’ll see what happens Tuesday.

Is there any way this is a joke? I’m just surprised this logo made it through market research and someone signed off on it. I would be curious to see how this passed all of the design checkpoints…

Again, Austin, it wasn’t the logo that made that helmet awesome, it was the metallic gold. I think this logo on the gold will be as awesome.

I assume our athletic department scheduled conference calls today expecting to congratulate each other on the excitement and good feedback. Best I can tell from various social media platforms they are going to be having a different kind of discussion.

I agree with this. You can barely see the old logo on the gold helmet from the stands. Who knows what the new logo will look like on a gold helmet.

Yeah people don’t seem to like it much. I don’t love it, but I like it well enough.

Looks like the new C is the C used in the CLT on the front of the helmet. It looks fine in that role. If that was created to be a secondary logo…ok. Stick with a modified 2 color C Pick (without the 49ers) as primary. Put the CLT on the jerseys or side of the pants…and front of the helmet as a secondary or a complimentary logo.

It’s fine as a secondary element but not at all as primary. It’s just not good enough for that… The C pick even with its flaws is a much stronger primary logo. IMO.

FWIW Austin, I loved the C pick on both the gold and the black helmets. That was the logo we should have gone with and invested in marketing and merchandising in 2000. But like a lot of other things, we squandered what was given to us.

I said how I feel on Twitter. The rebrand is about merchandising. If they don’t pull that off well, we have blown yet another opportunity.

Mike Hill and Will Healy both told me that older alums would not like the rebrand. They were right about that! Absolutely Horrible!
