Charlotte hires Michigan AHC Biff Poggi as football coach

He could be a passive investor at this point. Taken all his “winnings” and diversified them for a steady but more predictable, hands off return.

That’s what I would do anyway.

“IF” this doesn’t pan out, Mike Hill has to be fired right? And I’m not being negative, I’m just saying I feel like this is a big gamble hire (after missing on the Healy gamble) with having no college head coaching experience. Big risk big reward? Hill could have played it safe with a Skip-type resume and if it didn’t pan out I don’t think I would have immediately said fire Hill. We’ll see.

Funny thing about the big risk / big reward - which incidentally, I do agree with, is how some outsiders see it:

7-5 every year would basically make him Skip Holtz. And to the last tweet’s point - yeah, probably.

Also, can someone help me clarify his timeline?

2016: steps down from Gilman after fantastic run, still nationally ranked:

Then he takes the Michigan job because his son is there? Or was that stint # 2 at Michigan?

Then about 18 months later, he is let go? Staff fired? And he resurfaces at St Francis?

Quickly turns that program around, partly by engaging those kids, and partly by recruiting kids from outside Baltimore (which he says he did at Gilman too)… That latter part pisses off the other Catholic league coaches (MIAA), who quickly grow tired of his SFA teams kicking their teeth in (which will happen when you are putting a 5 star DE and multiple other 4 star kids on the field), so he schedules nationally, playing top 10 teams all over the country and probably paying to fly his team to them, much like he floats tuition and living expenses for his poorer kids?

Then back to Michigan for stint #2? Is this the time his son was there, or was this otherwise motivated?

Might be some answers at the end of the HBO show, but I haven’t finished it yet. I’m just trying to learn his story.

Skip was NEVER going to be the HC. He is Healy’s daddy.

If this goes badly - then probably. The only way he could save face is if he fires Sanchez & somehow finds a coach that immediately gets them to the NCAA Tournament. Not sure if he’ll be afforded the chance to make 2 hires in each key sport though.

clt says a global or gulfstream can easily be the cost of our full expansion…

For those that missed it, Kyle Bailey talked with Bruce Feldman, the guy who wrote the Athletic (fluff) piece and broke the news yesterday:

Some thoughts on this hire. Obviously not the coach we were all expecting at this point in Hill’s tenure but after some research I have some positive notes. 1) This guy obviously knows how to recruit (albeit at the high school level). He recruited high level talent nationwide and convinced them to come to a small, inner city, Baltimore school that doesnt even have its own facilities. He also managed to develop those kids into big time recruits at the P5 level. 2) He has been an associate head coach at one of the most successful programs in college football. He knows what big time football and winning look like. 3) He is on a different level of wealth. This type of guy tends to know other high-net worth individuals. The benefit here could come from NIL or donor possibilities… I am not saying this isnt a gamble or the slamdunk we were all hoping for but I am very interested in the potential he brings to the table.

Well, Bruce Feldman really likes the guy and gives a lot of reasons why. Nice interview.

Risky hire, maybe. But it appears he can bring a “team” together… including players AND staff. And as others have said, the staff will be key. Maybe he doesn’t need as much salary as would be expected and can turn that into extra pool to attract HIGH LEVEL coordinators. If this happens, it could be a special type situation and make a lot of sense. This is my thoughts only, no insight.

I’m going to have to hit the gym though, if he wins I think sleeveless shirts will be all the rage around here. My arms are not ready for that haha.

From a Michigan message board…

“Harbaugh at Michigan is:

  • 32-5 with Biff
  • 39-19 without Biff”

Hopefully Biff is the true reason for that record with him.

he wasn’t fired in 2016, in fact Harbaugh tried his best to keep him. He decided he was needed “more” at St. Francis, so he went back there and dominated for the next 5 years or so until Harbaugh talked him in to coming back to UM in early 2021.

Michigan subreddit seems to think this is a fairly big blow to the program and hope they can find someone to take his place. Grain of salt and all but interesting to read their thoughts over there.
