Charlotte Tabs Aaron Fearne as Interim Head Men's Basketball Coach for 2023-24

I’m not surprised the team would want Fearne as coach. But that’s not the same thing as what you are implying. So we learned our job isn’t that attractive, especially at this late date. That’s no surprise either.

We learned all that in a 10 day search? You are way too smart to believe the propaganda and smoke here

If our job isn’t attractive that’s a failure of our leadership. We are in one of the fastest growing cities in the US, a truly attractive destination to raise a family. Lots of money here, dining, entertainment, two hours to the mountains, four to the beach.

We have a top 75 budget in all of college sports.

We have over 30k students. We have an absolutely beautiful campus that just keeps getting better. The academic prestige of the school is slowly climbing.

We are moving into the ā€œbest of the restā€ conference in college sports. We are also not in total shambles coming off last season.

If we aren’t attractive, you really really have to ask yourself why, and the only answer that makes sense is our leadership.

That was my entire point, calling the entire team ā€œlosers with loser mentalitiesā€ is a direct criticism of the players personally. You want to do then then put your name out there, hence let everyone know who you are.

ā€œMeanjoegreenā€ why are you even on here? You denigrate the teams, coaches and players non stop. I have never seen a positive comment from you ever. I truly don’t believe you are an actual fan of our program.

I am ok with criticizing when warranted but that is all you do. Give your keyboard a rest, step out of your Moms basement and go find some joy in life. It is out there if you just give it a try.

You are a big part of the problem. It’s been over 15 years since we have a relevant basketball team of any merit. Mike Hill has had control the last 5 years, and here we are again at the same place we were after Price was fired.

Yet! You cheer them on and act like I am the problem. You and about 25% like you have tried to get me to go away, so that you can remain blissfully adoring of this farce of a basketball program.

Stay positive. You will earn 15 more years in basketball purgatory. Clearly, Mike Hill was not the man to fix basketball. That’s why he needs accepting fans like you. Guys who wanted More Ron. Get it More Ron!

Mr Greens mom ( negative Nancy) taught him well.

I’m with you 100% that Charlotte the city is a great place to live with a great university, but at the end of the day, it really comes down to things like salary, can one get to the Big Dance from here, and now, of course, NIL.

BTW, being close to the beach is nice but not everyone’s cup of tea. Just a reminder about Dusty May - three miles from the Atlantic and he could care less!

Allocation of resources is an admims responsibility. We have no business being in the American if we can’t pay the median salary for basketball. Making the tourney shouldn’t be an impedement because of facilities or conference affiliation, again the only impedement would be a lack of allocation of resources.

This should be a place where you can succeed. If we are competetive we will have good fan support. We have history and a passionate fan base considering our lack of accomplishments over the past 18 years. If the job isn’t attractive, it’s Mike Hills fault.

Can you tell me which coaches turned down the job because of money and link to those articles? I keep hearing this repeated but have yet to see anything concrete on that as the reason. It feels more like that is something that is being used to push the agenda that the sky is falling financially, that rooting in anything factual.

Its more likely the case that we decided to not over pay a coach and to wait a year when a new head coach would have the full period to recruit their players.

ā€œBig Part of the Problemā€. I have been a part of the University since 1986. I have been a contributor since I left the University and got my first real job. I have served on the Athletic foundation Board. I have had season tickets for football and basketball forever. Yeah I am part of the problem.
I go to every football and basketballgames and root for our athletes. I go to events and break bread with them and talk with them. I will continue to do so because I am of fan of them and our University
Do I criticize and get frustrated at times, absolutely but it doesn’t change my feelings about being a fan.
Just saying negative things about everything about our program is not being a fan, it’s just being a ………, well you know.

So, Mike Hill should have just thrown a ton of cash at some bottom of the barrel dud candidate in June? Sign him to a five year deal so the same people can bitch for years to come.

He tested the waters to see what was available in June, nothing really worked out, so we punt.

Mack was in the conversation and was a top target, but I suspect resources (salary, coaching pool, NIL) as well as roster talent all lead to him turning it down. He still has a promising career and the rebuild here is too risky to screw up his reputation for what was being offered. He will get a 7 figure job with better resources to compete in the next coaching cycle.

The other coaches would have gotten a pay raise here, but the lack of talent and inability to take advantage of the portal at this point to quickly rebuild the roster likely lead to them ultimately not being interested enough yo take the job.

The timing was very poor for hiring someone that was a winning head coach. Why leave a good situation to take over a roster with questionable talent with no opportunity to rebuild it before the next season and tank your up and coming career?

I just hope that we don’t reward fearne for a .500 type season because it was better than expected. I’m rooting for him to succeed, I just don’t think Sanchez left him a roster to allow him to do that.

Given the situation Ron put us in I believe Mike handled it appropriately. Its fair game to criticize Mike for holding on to someone that would put our program in that situation.

In an attempt to get this back on topic, Here is a video that illustrates part of the system that Fearne hopes to implement. It attempts to limit the opponents transition buckets, but one side effect is offensive rebounding.

clt is intrigued by this new system, but is concerned about the requirements to get physical to push the other team into the paint.
our team needs to cultivate mass

All of this is true about Mack. I just don’t think we could offer him the re-entry point he was looking for. Especially when we lost 2 of our best players. Weakened roster, not enough money. This isn’t rocket science. Not a stretch to believe he probably just turned us down. Someone is gonna give him $1-$2 million and a better shot at a quick turnaround. Maybe even at an established program whose coach got a call up to the elite level pr retired. Something like taking over Nova after Jay Wright hung it up…

Why all the man crushing for Mack? Didnt he leave UL in a wreck???

We also don’t know how things were left with the coaches we did interview. The search committee was not paid for nothing. They don’t get the full payment until a full time coach is hired so the search was basically put on hold until the end of the season. Some of them could have been interested but thought the timing wasn’t right and they could still be in the mix after next season. After hearing some of the names swirling around I was initially disappointed when we decided to go with an interim coach but now I do think it was the right move. Gives Fearne a chance to see what he can do with the team, keeps us from going into next season with a roster thrown together at the last minute and gives us a better chance of finding the best coach available at the end of the season.

Another issue with throwing a team together in June is you would be doing it entirely with leftover transfers who you will most likely be stuck with because they’ve already burned their free transfer. Options will be much better in March & will allow whoever the new coach is to put together a roster that he really wants instead of what he has had to settle for.
